If no one talks to you, we can talk to each other.:D :D
Catland and L4me.........you have got to be joking:D :D
My personal experience for #1 and #2 BBQ's is that no one shuts up..........not even me!
The only thing that might bother you..........is all of the laughter and the one liners are flying so fast you really have to be on your toes to not miss any of them.
It is more like
WHO ARE YOU?
WHAT'S YOUR REAL NAME?
OH, YOU ARE THE ONES FROM OREGON
WANT A SLUSHIE?
HOW ARE YOUR PETS..........YOU HAVE HOW MANY AGAIN?
DID YOU BRING PICTURES?
WHY NOT?
DO YOU WANT ANOTHER SLUSHIE?
OH, DON'T MIND THEM - THAT'S JUST LAURIE
AND SLICK HIDING FROM THE CAMERAS.
WOULD YOU LIKE SOME LEMONADE? IT IS HOMEMADE!

I'm still really excited, but on a more serious note, $$ is a real issue for me. If I can't find a roomie for my hotel room/cheap place to stay, I honestly can't go :(
PLEASE let me know!! :D

Nomi, I really want to stay at the Rad again, but I checked the prices last night and they are booking for July at $236.00/night.  Last year I was able to get a room for $100.00 but that was in May.
If their prices don't come down in the next couple of months, then you just might have a roomie...either that or I bunk in Gini's backyard office....
It's just too early to tell right now.
I'm starting to wonder if I go if anyone will talk to me!
L4M: It deeply disturbs me that you would even think this way. Where is this coming from?

A lot of times hotels will drop their prices as time gets closer. At this point they don't know if they're going to be busy that weekend or not, so they keep the prices high. As time gets closer and they're still half empty, they will start to drop their prices. Just keep an eye on the prices and check out some of those online hotel bookers. Can't think of any of the top of my head, but I remember we got a $75.00 room for $40.00 one year on our way to Colorado. hotels.com maybe?

The hotel Alexa and I are staying at is called the Alamo Inn & Suites. I've stayed there once before, it's not great but it's not horrible either. It's a 2 star hotel, so about as nice as a Motel 6. Keep in mind Alexa and I are young so we like to travel VERY cheaply. As long as it's safe, we have cable, a shower and a bed I'm pretty happy. The room cost us $50 a night and it's within walking distance of Disneyland.

I can't even afford $50/night. I can get a hotel for that rate too, at a Comfort Inn, but I would still need to share.

When it is closer to July, I will p/m all of you with directions to my home, time, etc.:D :D
I have been thinking about people bringing their pets and because my yard isn't that big..........but mainly because this is the home of Rascal, Annie and Emma..........I am leaning towards saying no.
Rusty and Ginger are the goldens that live across the street.
My neighbor brings them over to say hi to everyone, but she takes them back home after a little while.
Even that sends Annie and Emma into a tizzy..........they just aren't used to dogs or other pets in their yard. Rascal just says, "yeah, golden boy, come on over and let me have some of that nose!!"

I see that Gini has answered your question on the pets issue. Having been there last year, I would think that it would be really crowded if everyone brought their pets, and with people walking around all over the place (in and out of her house) and perhaps stepping in "stuff" we certainly don't want to turn Gini's back yard into a dog park. This is really meant to be a "people" gathering, not a "pet" gathering. Just my 2 cents worth. (Besides, we want to be invited back don't we??? ;))
L4M, the BBQ is right in Gini's back yard. We all sit around the patio table or picnic table and enjoy the moment. Just like Thursday's, we leave our attitudes at the door and have a good time with good company. That's what it's all about.

What about baby rats in cages? I was going to bring a rat or two for Uabassoon. Thought maybe others might want to see them too. :D
I wasn't sure exactly where the meeting was held, which is why I asked about bringing dogs. I'm still bringing Freckles to California with me, but I can keep her at my brothers while I'm at the barbecue. :) Now, if I can remember to bring my sunscreen I think I will be fine. HAHA, I told myself I'd never go back to California during the summer. Perhaps I'll make use of my stay there and travel back to Huntington Beach and paint curbs again like I did in the old days, LOL.
What's good about this trip is I'll get to see my family again! :D And of course, meet all you cool people too. I'm really looking forward to this.

Rascal just says, "yeah, golden boy, come on over and let me have some of that nose!!"
If Rascal wants a piece of Rusty, I can only imagine what might happen if he sniffs out a rattie. :( I know they will be caged, but anything can happen. Also, some people get squeamish around rodents. Better ask Gini first before bringing them along.

Sounds good. Though I doubt the cats when win against the rats, Heh. Rats can get pretty feisty. I remember when Ewok was younger and he stuck his paw through the cage of my females. That was the last time he attempted that LOL! :p
Since we'll both be in Anaheim it should be pretty easy to meet somewhere. :)

where is exactly BBQ will be?
Oh, oh **raises hand** let me.......
The BBQ is held in Gini's back yard in the heart of LA about 5 min. from Hollywood (correct me if I'm wrong, Gini). As Laurie stated earlier, it's just a back yard and not a dog park so NOT a good idea to bring pets. The whole idea is to "meet and greet", laugh, eat, talk, laugh, laugh, and more laughter, oh yes, and partake of the best lemonade this side of the Rockies.
Have not made any plans about the mugs, etc. but any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated.
Did I mention, be prepared to laugh?? :D :D
sandragonfly
03-21-2005, 04:01 AM
ok, ok slick... I mean what city.. I don't even know where hollywood is! *laughing with shame*
um..mugs..um -- you know...not a few know they're coming for sure so when you set the mugs for everyone, there'll one or two mug less or one, two left if someone didn't make it! so what I'm thinking is....patience worth it! mugs wait. bbq comes...all signatures (with user ids and real names) then we scan, whatever to get on the back of mugs.. so that way we'd get exact number of mugs (whose attend-ED BBQ).
OR, a group picture!! then very easy to put it on the back along with pet logo on front... and we can bring it back to 4th annunal BBQ!! hey, be fair...I don't get to bring the pt visor from last year....shucks! unless....one of you have an extra for me! *hint hint* :D

You mean sign language? Please forgive me for asking straight out but are you hearing impaired? If that's the case, then we will just have to make an extra effort to make you feel welcome and now I understand your comment about feeling left out. I don't sign myself but maybe someone else does.

I used to know ASL but I'm rather rusty. I do know the basics, or at least can usually make myself understood. Do you read lips? I have my ASL book at home, I can try to practise. My son knows it better than I so I can see if he can help me.
I'm Laurie by the way
Just completed some work reports and work has kept me away from Pet Talk except for a few posts.
Gina - I am Gini - and the BBQ is held at my home in the heart of Los Angeles.
I do not sign, but hopefully someone that will attend does.
But that does not mean for a minute that you aren't welcome with wide open arms. We tease a lot and laugh a lot, but we are a very congenial group and all have become good friends. If we run into any trouble, we will just park you in front of the computer and let you type out your questions.......and we can answer you on the spot. Everyone will make you feel welcome and comfortable, trust me!!
A Southern Chick is also very welcome to attend as well. North/South/East/West - y'all come, ya hear? :D :D
When the time gets closer and I know who is coming for sure, I will p/m you with my address and directions. But you do know that the date is Saturday, July 16th, I hope.

but don't worry, I do always give a chance! world changes in those days...
lbaker, I can read lips but I often prefer to answer "no". because some people speaks SO LITTLE that I even still can't understand or some people with mustaches..."uhhhh what??"
mustacher: oh..nevermind! *walks away*

No allergies on this homefront. As for food, I LOVE everything except "innards". I love fish too, as long as it's not staring back at me! :D Oh yeah, I should mention that I don't eat desserts, in fact I don't eat anything with sugar in it at all......ESPECIALLY THOSE DISGUSTING EASTER PEEPS!!! Ya know Laurie, perhaps the only way we'll get to ride this trip is if we hire someone to do pony-rides in Gini's front yard! Wouldn't she (and the neighbors) just loooovvveee us for that one?! ;) *snicker*
Slick, it depends... is the Cabana boy's name Juan? Is he from Spain? (Hope I remembered that right - otherwise I've just confused you! lol)

Geesh..........Laurie and Slick, slink out and leave Zip and I with all of the dishes.............wouldn't ya know???:D :D
Laurie, are you saying that this exhibit will be in L.A.? It is in New York right now............amazing photos!!!
Pony rides on my front lawn..........???? Nothing would surprise my neighbors as long as they could ride the ponies too.

OK Zip.....this warrants and explanation. I'll put as agenda item #2 for Friday night in between the introductions and the "entertainment". :D ;)
Those photos are amazing. I'd love to take in that show if it's in town at that time.

Saddle up, Richard. Or, saddle up Richard? What are you saying here - you won't arrange pony rides or do pony rides? From what I've heard the photography show will be in LA "over the summer". I'll get more details. The place where they go on exhibit is supposed to be almost as incredible as the photos themselves  It's a travelling construction like series of spaces. Weird and wonderful.. (rather like us!). Do Kiwi's and Aussies and Euro's do daylight savings time? What about Cannucks? Or is this time change just us weird-o's? Cold and dank on the East Coast this morning. Hardly the day to go downtown and look at cherry blossoms so I think I'll start a fire and bake and cook.

Baker is hot
Baker can cook
Baker is not
As spaced as she looks :p

It is a little more than three months until the actual July 16th BBQ takes place. I look out on my backyard and there is hope......the rains have made the flowers and lawn look beautiful.
If you just stay out of my basement/office/garage you would never know I had any problems at all. Hopefully by July 16th, those problems will be cleared as well.
It really does get me excited to hear that so many new people are planning on attending this year. Probably every story you have heard about the prior BBQ's are true. We just simply had an outrageously good time with so much laughter that it made our sides hurt.
Some of these good times occurred prior to the actual BBQ and as people make their travel arrangements they will be coming into Los Angeles on different times and different dates.
Whenever possible, I plan on being available to welcome you at the airport and take you to your destination or back to my home.
I will be available to take you back to the airport or train station just as long as I can coordinate the times.
At this point in time there are some plans in the works to get together on the days/nights prior to Saturday. Nothing is in stone since it is still a few months away.
I cannot begin to tell you how badly I do not want anyone to be left out or to have any hurt feelings.
It would hurt me to think that you were sitting in a hotel room somewhere and not be included in all of this hilarity.
If it is going on at my home - everyone is welcome.............
If there are plans for other activities such as Disneyland, that you are making that do not include everyone - it is understandable.
I for one, have taken my last teacup ride at Disneyland, so I won't be joining you for that event.
:p :p {think of this little guy barfing}
I guess what I am trying to say is that I am aware that many of you are coming to California from a great distance and also a great expense and I fully appreciate that.
It is my hope that absolutely everyone goes home having had a great time - and had a chance to meet other Pet Talkers and enjoyed every minute of their time here.
Now, let me share something that is true - and something that is not.
1. Yes, it takes four Pet Talkers to make lemonade, but if there were eight or ten.................just think of the possibilities - we could spin this off to a tv series.
2. Contrary to every hint that you may have read - there WILL NOT BE PONY RIDES. I don't want anyone disappointed!:D

I hope my post didn't exclude anyone...it was meant to let EVERYONE know they ARE invited! I know there are a lot of things to do, and like you said, Gini, not everyone is crazy about the Disney thing. I was letting everyone know that if they didn't want to go to Disneyland for a second day, we were planning other things to do as well.
Everyone is welcome! :) I cannot express how excited I am for July to get here. YAY!!! :D

Wow, where have I been? I've missed so much on this thread!
Gini, wonderful post. I, for one, knew everything you said, but it's good that you said it for those who were not quite as clear and may have ended up with hurt feelings. This is just a difficult thing because there is so much going on and one person can't be everywhere, so as hostess it is good that you let everyone know they are welcome.
Seeing as this is the CA BBQ, I have a secret about somebody that will be joining us. :p I don't know if it's really a secret (I'm just a third party on this one), so I'm not going to be the one to announce it, so you'll all just have to try and guess again until the main parties decide to announce - or not! ;) :D
I don't think I'll be doing Disney. I would really love to, but I just don't think I'm going to have time. I'm thinking I'll be coming in Thursday morning but haven't made the plane reservation yet. I will be staying with Sara (Edwina's Secretary) and if I remembe right, she is about an hour from Gini. Gini, I will not be flying into LA since I'm staying with Sara, so you don't have to worry about picking me up - but thank you so much for offering. You're really sweet to make such an effort for everybody.
So, that's all I've got to add for now. I'm really looking forward to this trip and mystery person #2 makes it even more exciting! :D
PS - sorry Kelly, but the ticker that gave the day countdown started charging so I had to switch. I used the snail because it seems like time is just dragging. Just thought I'd mention this since we haven't had a Kelly countdown lately. ;) :D

I'm thinking that I'll probably end up flying down this year instead of going by car. I'll probably arrive some time Friday afternoon or evening and then I'll either leave some time Sunday or Monday. I'm not going to do Disneyland so it depends on what else is going on for Sunday. Maybe AmberLee and I can fly down together and leave together too. So now there are 2 mystery guests. Hmmmm.:)

hey, anything new about mugs? I think a group pictures (NOT on ponies) would be a great one to be on mug and ....oh um..just realized how can everyone get it without paying a dime for shippings...rats. maybe all of us pay $1.00 (if that's enough for each shipping of a mug) to whoever makes mugs for everyone so that way this person wouldn't have to pay for everything....what do you think?? how would each person pay for a mug anyway? or didn't we plan to divide?

I just called to confirm my reservation (I know, I'm paranoid....) and they told me that United Airlines is having a major seat sale right now and that's why my cost is so low. (in actual fact my cost is $301 + a $10 booking fee).
Just a heads up for those who have to make flight arrrangements.

False teeth spark murder hunt
A German pensioner sparked a murder hunt after she found a pair of glasses and a set of false teeth in her garden.
Police dug over her entire garden following 85-year-old Iris Muller's find in a flower bed at her home in Kassel.
Eventually, the mystery was solved when he found a man's wallet in his garden.
All three belonged to a local man who confessed to losing all three after a heavy drinking session.
He said: "I remembered falling over a garden wall but could not remember which one."

I won't even think of what's going to happen to my ears. Last time I flew I was in agony. That was many years ago.
If someone needs a place to stay, I'm willing to share.

Well I figured it was $99 each way but you're right, that's still a good price. Most closeby motels have a shuttle from airport to motel so the arrival/departure time shouldn't be a concern. A few people may be wanting to share that have quarters closer in town.. That's up to you guys. I imagine some private messages will ensue between now and July to figure it out. Some of us have friends and family in the area so needn't get involved with those kinds of logistics. There are plenty of things to do and see in LA for times not spent on a Saturday afternoon at a BBQ.

I don't really care where I stay as long as there is a bed and a bathroom. I have no plans except the BBQ. For once in my life, I'm going to "go with the flow'.
Did I see something about a trip to see some male dancers?:D

Mary, nice to hear that you will be joining us on Saturday. I'm one of the "mature" members of the crowd...not into too much parteeing. I'm sure some of the younger members will probably be planning some activities outside of Saturday. I know that Disneyland was mentioned. Anyway, there's plenty of time for planning. I just know that you are in for a good time with lots of laughs.
