You may know about this from this other thread - Exit Santa Ebbs. Enter Miss Conehead (http://67.15.70.205/talk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66976) - but I'll explain anyway. :) Not sure how it began, but Ebby has this owie near the end of her tail. Took her to the vets, it was cleaned up, she was given an antibiotic injection and we went home with some pills to give her.

For a little while she stopped worrying at it and it began to heal ... then she started in again! I called the vet and got some more pills and a e-collar. Put it on her only to find she could still reach her owie!! Christmas time, vets closed until yesterday, (by the way, most everywhere else was too, been a long Christmas break for some).
Called in the vets for a new one, here is Ebbs modelling the latest version.

And here are pictures of her in the two cone sizes.

You may be wondering why I didn't put the cone on her last night. Well, she fooled me once again. Her owie looked to be begining to heal, she obviously hadn't touched all day, plus she was sooo loving, never before load of purrs and headbumpies, she was a little like a dog pushing under my hand and arm. So I thought one more night wouldn't harm. Big mistake. This morning there was what only could be dried blood on the carpet plus her owie was red raw. Bad girl. To be fair, she was exceptionaly good while I was putting the cone on her this morning, no scratches this time.

(Not very good) Picture of owie attached

Poor Ebby - that owie looks like it hurts a bit!
Moms have to be tough when we make the unpopular decisions.
Someday Ebby will look at the photos and laugh about it with you - in the mean time....its Miss Conehead 2005 for you Ebby!

Poor Ebbie... I know all about the loving and sweetness part. They KNOW they are about to get that blasted cone put on their heads, so they try to convince you otherwise. Good luck with the new cone,. And don't trust her for one second to take that off until you see hair growing back!

Ebby, you have to leave the owie alone so it'll heal!

Are you soaking her tail?

There is a blue liquid antiseptic that vets use. Novasalan (sp)

Or I would think that hydorgen Peroxide would be a good thing.
Please check with your vet, and maybe you can speed the healing, so she can come out of her cone.

When Malfi was in his cone, he was inconsolable. It was a 15.

I usually use benedine (the same stuff they use when washing a pre-surgical area for people).....you can buy it at any drug store. It is what I have washed Miley with....and my one bunny, twice, when she had open wounds from Denver's bites.

Ouch. Poor Ebby.

Also, I found a soft, big collar on line and used it with Miley. It is light blue in color and it huge. I used it in reverse to the instructions, so it ended up looking like a big skirt around her neck. Whenever she would reach back, the skirt effect would cover her behind area and she was not able to reach that far. The only draw back was that sometimes she would trip on it as she was walking......

Keep us posted.....good luck....

That is one sore looking tail!

SAS:rolleyes:here is the web site for the soft collar.... (http://trimlineinc.com/)

Rose, yes I have been, and am, bathing Ebby's tail, with salt water as the vet told me. I did mention using something else but she didn't seem to keen on the idea. However, if I can get to a chemist tommorow I am going to try and get one, or both, of the liquids you and sas recommended.

sas, thanks for the link to the soft collar, it looks real good. Trouble is it isn't sold in this country. Though after doing a web search I did find something similar, a soft vinyl one, sold by a marketing company who supplies vet surgerys. I will give them a ring tommorow and see if they will let me have one. If they do it won't get to me for about a week (the holidays again) even so it will be well worth having. :)

I held her dish so she could eat - she can't seem to get the hang of the bigger cone - and later on she made her way downstairs (I managed to spot her before Bob so she didn't get chased ). I've attached a picture(s) taken just a few minutes ago of her on the sofa. :)

Thanks again
Chris

Poor Ebby, poor you!! E-collars and cats are NOT a fun thing!! The ones SAS suggested are much better for cats. Does your vet carry them??

Get better soon, Ebby. :)

Poor Ebby.:( I hope that you're owie heals up very soon. Both Storm and Cirrus can relate to what you're going through. They hated wearing their e-collars too.

Thanks. :)

sas, I called up about the vinyl collar and it turns out they are just about to get stocks in of the Trimline collar!! They are on the holiday break until Tuesday so I will call back then.

Talking of collars.. Ebbs has figured out how to get and lick her owie even with the bigger cone on!! I was so mad! When I calmed down I figured as long as she wasn't able to chew on it I would leave the collar on. I called up the vets but all they could say was if it wasn't healing by then to bring her in when they re-open after the holiday, which will be Tuesday.

The chemist that I called at didn't have any benedine but they did carry Savlon as a blue antiseptic liquid wash so I got that. After I used it I applied some savlon ointment thinking it would help it heal, that's when I caught her licking her tail, trying to get it all off I guess.

I m so tired, I didn't sleep much last night because I was listening out for her (I crated Bob for the night). One time I heard her bumping about downtairs and had to go down and help her find her way back upstairs. Then I got up a couple of times to see she was ok, which she was. :) She was so loving this morning, she came in my bedroom and jumped on the bed just as I was putting on my dressing gown and proceeded to purr and try and headbumpie me a good morning. :D

Well, it's around 20 minute to 2005 here in the UK so I will finish by wishing you all ...

A Very Happy New Year!!

Chris

Happy New Year, Chris!! Greetings to Bob and Ebby too. How sweet of Ebby, trying to give you headbumpies with her horrid big cone! How frustrating that she can still reach her tail! Guess all you can do is monitor her and try to keep her away from it as much as possible. Good luck!
