KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - The star striker of a Malaysian state soccer team has been sacked for failing to turn up for his own wedding, a newspaper said Tuesday - adding that he called off the ceremony in a cell phone text message to his fiancee.
Hasmawi Hassan, who plays professional soccer for the northern state of Kedah, gave no reason in the short message he sent his bride-to-be Norlida Abdul Rahman, hours before they were to exchange vows, the New Straits Times reported.
About 1,000 people had been waiting at the bride's home in the southern state of Johor.
Hasmawi has since gone missing. Efforts to contact him by his family and 23-year-old Norlida have drawn a blank.
Kedah Football Association vice president Chong Itt Chew said Hasmawi's two-year contract would be terminated because his behavior had tarnished the state's image, the report said.
"I was shocked when I found out our player had done such a terrible thing," it quoted Chong as saying.
"It is heartbreaking, especially when I look at the wedding gifts," the paper quoted Norlida as saying.
The two had been dating since 2001, when she was studying to be a nurse.
