Twenty years ago I was a single mom working 60+ hours a week to make ends meet. Had been dating Dick (my SO) for a couple of years, but still lived in my own house.
I was about 30 pounds lighter. Had a lot less wrinkles and gray hair. {sigh}
But wasn't nearly as smart as I am now! :o  :D

Single Mom, trying to raise two teenagers. Working a straight (9 to 5) job during the day and waitressing at night. One big ol' dear dog and three cats. Except for the kids, cats and dog I was at a pretty miserable point so keep the nostalgia and I'll have a strong DOTD please kind sir. What's with the simple syrup? Can I have some complicated syrup? Ya trying to short change me or something ? :p

Oh I could use an Old Fashioned right now please barman! :D Going Christmas shopping tomorrow, I need the sustenance!
Slick, I remember that like it was yesterday too. I put the news on that morning and loads of people were being interviewed, everyone was in shock, but I didn't know who it was they were speaking about. I could only imagine that Ronald Reagan had been assasinated before his inauguration, because from the commentary on the radio, it was obviously someone extremely famous and it was obviously a big deal! I was stunned when I heard it was John Lennon.
Lets see, what was I doing in 1984? Hmmm, I'm not sure that I can remember that far back! I remember it was one of the best summers we ever had! Wall to wall sunshine.

Now that I can come back to the bar ( spent the last two weeks taking care of wife and newborn) I'll have a DOTD, and I'll bring the Bailey's and a bottle of Godiva for those who want a little "adult" hot chocolate.

Let's see - 20 years ago I had just graduated college and was trying to figure out what I was to do now! I was about 10 lbs lighter, fewer wrinkles....but no pets in my life :(
But it wasn't for long that I didn't have a fur friend - within 6 months I had my first - of many! :D
An DOTD for me please!

I didn't know anybody outside the state of Wisconsin knew what an Old Fashioned was! I remember the first time my mom came to visit me in Chicago and we went to dinner. She ordered an Old Fashioned and we had to tell the bartender how to make it.
My standard order - when I ordered Old Fashioneds on a regular basis that is - was an old fashioned sweet with olives. Cherries come standard with a "sweet" and olives come standard with a "sour" but I preferred the olives, so Richard, how 'bout an Old Fashioned sweet with olives? Haven't had one of those in a long long long time!
Ok, now for 20 years ago.....hmmm.....let me think for a minute.....I was 22 years old and had just moved into my first apartment all by myself (had apartments before, but always with roomies - got sick of roomies and moved in by myself). I was quite the wild child, but was living the good life, making relatively good money with nothing to spend it on but partying and toys. Usually out in the bars every night, some of those nights I don't remember coming home :o but I always made it home in one piece amazingly, except for the night I was stone cold sober and a drunk driver side swiped me. She was so drunk she didn't even know she hit anybody and kept going. A guy in a pick-up truck saw the whole thing happen and took off after her and the cops actually pulled him over until he explained what happened and that's why he was chasing her! When they finally pulled her over, she got out of the car and promptly fell down.  The only good that came out of this was that my 18 year old brother bought my smashed car and that, along with the insurance money, was enough so I could buy my very first brand-new car. I was so excited. :D
So for me, life was good in '84. I had already dumped the loser boyfriend in April of '83, so I recovered nicely from that and was on my way! On my way to what it took me awhile to figure out, and I'm still not sure I know! On that note, I think I'll take my Old Fashioned off to the couch by the fire and reminisce/contemplate a little. ;)

Hmmmmm, 1984. I was working for an Advertising Agency at the time and living in sin....
Every Friday at work we had to make a "beer run" and since the liquor store was only a block away, we would load up the empty cases on a dolley and wheel it up the street, turn in the empties, load up with full cases and off we would go again. From 4pm to ??? we would all sit in the bosses office and partee. He had a piano in his office and could caress those ivory keys like nobody's business. After awhile, my then-BF got a bit disgusted because he had to come and pick me up from work and drive me home. I think he was just jealous. Three years later we parted for good.
So in memory of 1984, I'll take a nikked beer please.
LH: Congrats. Are you going to post pictures so that we and goo-goo and ga-ga over them?

I can't believe I'm 40 :( Twenty years ago I had just been dispatching about 1 1/2 years. Hadn't gotten Flair yet(He just now turned 20) It's been so long that I've just about forgotten what it was like to be young and carefree. I know I did go to a lot of good parties. The police really know how to throw some good ones. We're having one this Saturday. I haven't been to a good party in a while so it should be fun. I've got a Santa hat with stars on it that light up. Looking forward to it.

As an aficionado of really crappy movies, I have to tell you that there is nothing more satisfying than seeing something in an old
Sci Fi flick that mom used or had in her kitchen at home....
Like a cheese grater, pot or electrical appliance....
I do remember on really stupid movie where some aliens came out with a pistol and started to blow up things with it!!!! It was a popular toy pistol years ago.....the company that made it was Whamo and I think the gun was called an Air Blaster.......You cocked the lever and it shot out a puff of air........It was completely useless past 20 feet, but you HAD to have one for Xmas......
One thing that you learned pretty quickly was that if you filled the muzzle with dirt the first shot produced a spectacular puff of dust and rocks....by the second shot it was pretty well wrecked.....;)
Then you hid it from mom and dad becuase they'd go "gladiator"
on your arse for breaking it......
I owe you a drink!!
DONE!
Slick.....
I would take vacations and go work odd jobs to earn even MORE MONEY....I worked at a bicycle/moped warehouse.......The guys put together a 50cc motocrosser and we would ride that thing all around the warehouse with the sole purpose of trying to rip our pinkies off on the bicycle box corners......

13 REASONS WHY ALCOHOL SHOULD BE SERVED AT WORK...
1. It's an incentive to show up.
2. It leads to more honest communications.
3. It reduces complaints about low pay.
4. Employees tell management what they think, not what they want to hear.
5. It encourages car pooling.
6. Increase job satisfaction because if you have a bad job, you don't care.
7. It makes fellow employees look better.
8. It makes the cafeteria food taste better.
9. Bosses are more likely to hand out raises when they are wasted.
10. Salary negotiations are a lot more profitable.
11. Employees work later since there's no longer a need to relax at the bar.
12. Eliminates the need for employees to get drunk on their lunch break.
13. Employees no longer need coffee to sober up.

MMMMM 20 years ago I was 23 A 3yr old daughter, and 1 yr old boy. I was learning to can for His allergys. Living in a horrable house in Linden (a dutch reform town ) every thing closed at 5pm friday till 8 am monday. No dancing and it was a dry town. I was a stay at home mom (the only one in the development(:( ) so you know where all the kids were. Hubby was working 60hrs a week I was too far from my folks. A very isoltaed time no car.

20 years ago, I was on my first job after college, and preparing for my wedding (the first one). I got married, for the first time, on Dec. 29. This year (2004) would have made 20 years. It didn't go that far, unfortunately. Ended in 1993, instead. But life is MUCH better now. So I'm ready to celebrate. I have a 2nd anniverary on the 21st of this month with my "new" husband, Scott.
I'll take Champagne, bartender!!! :)

Wow, sounds like so many of us wouldn't want to go back 20 years if they paid us to! I guess what this means is we all lived and learned and we're now much better people because of the lessons we learned then - thank God! :D
Drinks are on me bartender! Oh bartender....Ri-chard...yoo hoo...oh well, since drinks are on me I'll guess I'll get them for everybody too. Champagne for Logan, anybody else? Corinna, not sure what HBR is, but if it's a drink, it's yours! Redhedd, non-alcoholic slushie for you and Molson for Wolflady.
Hey Slick, you out there? Peanut is snoring up a storm as she sits on the back of the couch overlooking my typing. For some reason this made me think of you. ;) Probably because I know you would give just about anything to be sitting here hearing her snore for yourself. :D Sending soft sweet Peanut snores your way. :D Tubby's being awful quiet tonight. No snores from his side of the room....yet.
Aahhh....this fire feels good on the old bones (mine that is). I think I'll just take myself a nekkid beer and curl up here by the fire. Where's Mario? He's been pretty quiet today. He's kind of old himself, isn't he? Maybe he has some memories to share. With his circus going wife?
You expect me to remember what I did 20 years ago!
HA! I can't even remember what I did yesturday. :D
Lets see!
I was working for the DMV back then, married, lived
in a bad neighborhood while saving up for our house.
Had two wonderful dogs. My parents,
and grandparents were alive and well.
I was a lot younger and thinner too. :)
It has been a long day, so I came here to unwind.
Now let me get this straight............you guys are talking about a complicated - old fashioned - 50 foot woman RIGHT???
But according to Debbie she is a bit muddled.
I think my head hurts.........so I will go home and go to bed.

Slick, I agree with Corinna. If you're coughing especially. My mom - who usually doesn't touch more than a drop of liquor - was coughing a lot after her bypass surgery (over 10 years ago now). She couldn't take all the normal cough medicines because it would have interfered with the heart medications she was taking, so the only thing she found that would subdue the cough is a shot of whiskey! Yes, she had at least one or two shots a day - and this from a woman who drinks soooo rarely! I couldn't believe it but I was there to witness the coughing and then the calm, so now I'm a believer. :D Also, if you look at all the normal cough medicines out there, they're all something like 10% alcohol, so why not go right for the good stuff and forget all the sweet syrupy stuff. ;) :D
Anyway, hope you feel better, and hope Mario doesn't steal anymore posts. Maybe he thought it would make a nice Christmas present for somebody. ;)

West Coast (or should I say "Wet Coast") reporting in. It's been cold, windy and rainy for days now and all I want to do is crawl back into bed...but Thursdays is calling my name. Any pancakes left or did David eat them all? ;) I'm trying to think of some smart "duck" comment but I've only been out of bed for 10 min....let my brain come back to life first.

Although it's pretty obvious that my mind tried to duct the issue because I had to read that twice before I got it - and the second time real slow so it could all sink in. Guess my mind isn't paddling away as well as it should be.

In a software design meeting, we were using typical technical jargon to discuss a data exchange interface with a vendor. One co-worker said the programming we had ordered was delayed because the vendor was suffering from a "severe nonlinear waterfowl issue." Curious, the team leader raised his eyebrows and asked, " What exactly is that?"
The programmer replied, "They don't have their ducks in a row."
--------------------------------------------------------------------

That is exactly what I am suffering from today:D

Slick, I like the guy that asked "What's that?" Seems that most people, not wanting to seem dumb in front of their techie peers, would have just nodded their heads yes and never known exactly what the guy was talking about. ;) The guy had guts to question - just like the guy who asked about digging through the garbage to find armor for their hum v's (just how do you spell hum v anyway? And if it's a hum v, where does "hummer" come in, what about the v? Sooo many questions on a Friday afternoon....)
Anyway, Corinna, you're right, usually with duck tape, if left too long, it will start to quack up and then leave sticky stuff behind which only increases the bill to get it all off.
Gee, it's 12:30 in the afternoon here and I'm not getting any better at this. Maybe I should fly home and duct my head back under the down comforter.
Oh Debbie, how sweet. I never thought of ducks quite like this before. Down comforters...........little ducks that go to your house and comfort you when you are down.
I tell ya the things you learn on this site!

Tubby and Peanuts Mom, and anyone else who might be wondering where the term "Hummer" Comes from:
The military has a fondness for acronyms. The original contract nomenclature to the vehicle now know as the Hummer was the "High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle" or HMMWV. this became Humvee, which was later shortned even further to Hummer.
Richard- is the bar going to be open tonight? If so, get the Coffee going, I'll have an Irish coffee, heavy on the Jamesons', short on the coffee.
while we're on the subject of ducks, we've beaten Duct tape to death, but what about duck sauce? Is that the leftover ground duck from making the glue for the Duck tape?

I heard this one years ago...
A soldier was looking thru a catalogue for a replacement zipper.
Unable to find the appropriate 'fix' for his problem, he approached his platoon leader and explained his problem...There is no zipper under the letter "Z".
The platoon leader explained to him that he wouldn't find it under "Z"- He's have better luck looking under "I".....

Wow, has it been this kind of week for everyone??
I thought I was the only one who wanted to go home and hide (I'll do the comforter, but not the duck).
Had a run in with ducks once - never again. Ducks not only quack - they poop - A LOT! And falling in it was not a pleasant experience. The only good thing was I was too drunk to really care. It was a great party!

Cliff helps to clear pubs
Landlords have found the best way to get rid of drinkers at closing time at Christmas is to play a Cliff Richard song.
Pub bosses watched the reaction of customers to festive tunes and it was 64-year-old Cliff singing his 1988 No1 hit Mistletoe And Wine who cleared bars the fastest.
The carol Silent Night, Aled Jones' Walking in the Air and Elvis' Blue Christmas were also a turn-off for drinkers.
A spokesman for John Barras pubs said: "Christmas wouldn't be complete without Cliff but he certainly gets customers to drink up."

I'm only catching the tail end of this thread, but we had a pet duck for quite a few years! Her name was Jemima (after Beatrix Potter) and she was a newborn freshly hatched duckling swept from a nest along a nearby river. We were fishing with friends/aka drinking, and throwing worms into the water:rolleyes: but I'll never forget our friend saying JAN..GET OUT OF THE WATER...SOMETHINGS COMING AT YOU"! My eyesight was, and still is incredible, and I saw this newborn mallard duckling being swept by the current. Grabbed her up...and yup...I was mama. We did try to find a suitable nest for over an hour around the marsh, but alas, ended up taking her home. One cute duckling, and sadly she ws scared to death of her own kind! I tried numerous times to fix her up with a flock of mallards, but it didn't work. We had her for quite a few years, and I might add, she was highly intelligent! One of the RB cats we had "Y" ripped her across the bill one day. Jemima recognized him from the other 2 residing in the apt. and cornered him and went and beat the daylights out of him a month + later! She was never messed with again! Anyway...duck, duck, duck...goose! I'll duck outta here before I get in trouble....but give me anything that's intoxicating. I'd like to become "comfortably numb"..in ode to the "Who"
