View Full Version : Please send Tigger some PT Prayers

It was a bad weekend. I spent Saturday night up making sure Tigger did not die in her sleep and Sunday I spent with her in the ER Vet Center.
I noticed on Saturday that she was coughing....but a different kind of coughing....nothing like if she had a hairball. Sunday brought more of the same coughing, and then wheezing, no appetite, no eating or drinking, no bathroom break and all she wanted to do all day was sleep.....very unlikely behavior for her. Her coughing brought back really bad memories of Tig's brother Tony that I lost in 99. He died of Cardiomyopathy....something I did not catch fast enough for adequate treatment. So here I am no Sunday crying that maybe I missed a sign or symptom and I'm going to loose my baby girl.
I called my regular vet but they cut back on their staffing so I had to call the ER Center...they were wonderful.
An exam found Tigger to have an enlarged heart, a heart mumur and asthma. I feel so guilty...like I missed something.
I have to be very careful with Tigger. The normal course for feline asthma is Prednisone (sp?) which can cause heart failure in a feline with an enlarged heart. Now I am so scared that while I'm at work something is going to happen to her.
Tigger has a vet appointment with my regular vet on Wednesday where he is going to see her X-ray and give her a full blood workup......
Please keep Tigger in your prayers. I am so nervous and I am not prepared to loose her. She is my little princess. She was my very first cat just after Mark and I got married in 93. I lost her brother and I don't want to loose her. :(
Thank you for listening to me. I'm sorry the post was so long....I just can not stop wondering if I did something wrong.

Adorable Tigger, we are sending our best healing thoughts to you.
And tell your Meowmie that most probably she did not have a chance to notice anything earlier because heart problems in elder cats look very very similar to a normal more quiet behavior.

Oh Meg, I'm so sorry. Poor Tigger, it's sounds like a lot going on with her. How has she been since the ER vet visit? Is she still coughing and wheezing and is she eating and drinking some now?
You didn't do anything wrong so please don't make yourself feel that way.
You and Tigger are in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us updated.

Oh poor Tigger. :( I hope she'll feel better soon and start eating and drinking again. You must be worried sick.
Sending lots of positive thoughts to Tigger, and to you.
Get better, Tigger!!

Oh no! I can certainly relate to what you are going through and I will most definitely be sending out good thoughts and prayers for Tigger! And like Barbara says, you can't beat yourself up for missing something. We all know how good cats are at hiding their illnesses from us - why do that do that?
{{{hugs}}} to you and Tigger and hoping she is ok when you get home.
And if she's still not eating - start the shoving it down her throat now! The longer she doesn't eat the worse off she's going to be all around. Ask for the vet for some Hills A/D which is supposed to get them eating again - get the baby food, Tubby fell for the beef & beef gravy flavor. Get a syringe (without the needle) and squirt water down her throat if she won't drink. This all sounds rather drastic, but not eating and drinking will only make matters worse.

Thank you all. Lori she started to come around last night and was drinking some water but no food yet.
Debbie I am stocked up on the baby food.....as a matter of fact I just went this morning for some more. Gabe at least is responding well to baby food.....now it will serve another purpose called Tigger!!!

Praying for Tigger's recovery.
Debbie's right, the syringe feeding is the thing to do.
Any food is better than no food, so if you need a long list of things to try, just ask.
From homemade slop recipes to KFC.
That's what us rescuers have in our bag of tricks.
Come on Tigger, you do it for your Mommy.

Prayers for Tigger. And {{{{HUGS}}}} for you. I am sure you did not miss anything. Cats will hide an illness so well that you may never even know. So the fact that she has been diagnosed and can now be treated is a blessing in itself.

Please believe me and the others when we say that you DID NOT do anything wrong. Like Jen said, cats are so well at hiding an illness.
Prayers and positive thoughts being sent out for your precious Tigger and (((((HUGS))))) for you.

Prayers coming your way. Sounds like a dreadful weekend, but I am glad you were able to get her to a vet. At lest now you have a diagnosis and can keep an eye out for symptoms and any decline in her activities.

I'll be praying for you and for Tigger.
Do you have access to a heart specialist? When I worked at the vet, we had one we referred clients to. Maybe talking with one would help? (Or at least getting your vet to consult with one?)
Please take care. The only thing your guilty of is being a good cat meowmie.

Oh, sorry to hear that, Meg. I hope Tigger gets better.

Kelly, thank you.....While we don't have a specialist on site at the clinic we do have one on an appointment basis that will come to the clinic. I already called my vet this morning to let them know what happened and to see if it is possible to have the specialist there on Wednesday. I am also going to have an ultrasound of her heart done.

Meg
I'm so sorry for Tigger's health crisis. My Rosco has a very bad cough and had xrays done and they found he had allergy's against Broncitis, plus Asthma and much weezing. He's on Prednisone but my Vet the other day told me to use a dietary suppliment called Multizyme which helps his Asthma and coughing. Please ask your vet about it.It's capsules but can be broken up in the food or mix with water to shringe it into his mouth slowly so he doesn't gag.Not to much water is better so it's thicker. It may help her enough to slowly weed off the prednisone or there may be other natural remedies you can ask about. If your vet isn't into natural remedies ask one who does or I can call my vet and ask.Good luck with Tigger.I'll send prayer to her.Rosco still is on Prednisone but maybe your cat can be helped with these other remedies.

Meg, Sending many, many purrayers for Tigger and you. One of my kitties adopted out to the sweetest people that have adopted 3 from me (I cat sit for them as well as clean) are going through the same thing with my rescued Binky. They have added to his meds, and I'm saying prayers for Binky & Tigger now. As others have said, don't beat yourself up for not noticing! Many times cats hide their symptoms. It's built into their wiring. Please give her lots of kisses for me, and all the PTers who'll be praying things perk up soon. Do get her to eat though! And keep us posted.

Prayers for Tigger!
PS When my little RB Tiger stopped eating, the baby food didn't do anything for her. I switched to human canned salmon and hand fed it to her after waving it under her nose. That did the trick.

Oh, Meg ... I am just now checking in to PT after being off for several days. I am so sorry to hear about Tigger's illnesses, but there is NO WAY that they are any of your fault!!! I will be praying that your regular vet can plan a course of action that will relieve sweet Tigger and give her many more years with you!

Thank you everyone. I don't feel like I have slept in three days.....I bet I look like it too.
Tigger had more energy last night and she ate some turkey breast last night and was drinking more than the weekend so I know that is a good sign. However her wheezing is worse. Tigger sleeps between Mark and I at night and all night all I could hear was her wheezing and then the coughing and when she would try to "talk" to me all she has is a gasp of air...no meow. :(
I called first thing this morning to her vet and they are going to see her tonight at 5pm. They would have seen her first thing this morning but I don't have a very understanding boss.:(
I left her sleeping peacefully this morning and everything is ready for 5 tonight.
Thanks again for all the support. :)

OH Meg! I'm so sorry to hear about Tigger! I'm just now trying to catch up and please know that you and Tigger are in my thoughts and prayers.
There must be something about this time of year that is triggering all these breathing problems. I saw where Christa's Sophie was diagnosed with asthma and I'm having trouble with Abigail too. She is coughing and wheezing off and on. I hope this soon passes!
Prayers are certainly on the way and I will be watching for an update. {{{HUGS}}}
