I got a hamster last friday, an adorable little girl. She's so sweet and tame..but I have noticed, one of her eyes is red and the other is just a normal brown/black color. Could her red eye be blind? Should I be concerned? When I got her, I thought it was just the way the light was hitting her eye. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm not sure about hamsters but I do know that in other animal species it sometimes can mean that they are blind, sometimes it is just the color.

If you are worried or if it looks as if there is any type of infection or trouble (swollen, discharge etc..) I would make an appt. w/ your vet.

Otherwise she will be fine, blind or not, they adjust very well, & obviously this was there before you got her, most likely she was born like that so even if she is blind she does not know life any other way. She would then think that being blind in one eye is normal.

Congrats on your new addition!

My old hamster had one black/brown eye and one red eye he wasn't blind thats just the way he was... Like albino animals they sometimes have red eyes my hamster was peach and white...

My hamster Diego Joe had one red eye & one brown/black eye. He later became blind. It could be that the eyes are two different colors but I wouldn't take the chance. Good luck & happy Thanksgiving.

Hamsters, mice and rats have a mutation known as odd eye, meaning they have eyes of two different colors. This is perfectly normal. The only thing you would have to worry about is being sensitive to the light in the pink eye. I've had many odd eyed hamsters before. :) If you notice that the eye is starting to get cloudy then I would worry about blindness, but she's most likely just an odd eye.
