Rawhide

I bought my daog a rawhide toy yesterday in the shape of a ring, because if it's shaped like a bone, she digs anywhere she is and tries to baury it. She gnawed at it for hours and for the first time seemed to love one of her toys, but first a piece of it disppeared and now the rest of it is gone.. . I searched everywhere, and she was very sad about it being gone, so I think she ate it. Should I not give her rawhide anymore, or just buy a much larger version?:confused:

I am not a big advocate for rawhide any more.
I heard stories that unattended dogs have choked
on peices getting caught in their throats.

I believe pressed rawhide would be safer.

(JMHO/I to tend to be over causious)

My 2nd dog use to hide and bury stuff all over the yard
too. :)

I am picky too...don't think you can be too cautious...I bought some really cool beef chipped bone treats for gracie and one got stuck sideways in her mouth..could have been a big problem! Now I break them in half...and I try to stick to small enough not to choke...(if she happens to suck it down her windpipe)..or large enough and tough enough that it is going to last a while and still want to be where I can see her..I just don't like anything that gets gooey..I worry about bacteria growing.

She likes to bury stuff in the couch pillows..that is always fun to find..lol

My dog is good with raw hides and treats. She always chews her food well, but her puppy is the opposite. She wolfs her food down as if it's a race. They both love raw hide, so i try to buy big ones, and throw them away when they become a dangerous size.:)

we get my dog the smaller rawhides.I personlly wouldnt get the ones that are shape like a circle.Kodie is always supervised when eating it.Its very good for their teeth.

I would suggest American made rawhide in big enough (flat) pieces that she can chew them for a while and you can take them away when they get too small.

My two dogs have to be watched over the whole time they have their rawhides so I can make sure they don't choke on them or fight with each other when one finishes theirs first.

I have occasionally given mine pressed rawhide because I heard it was better for them than the regular kind. Also, Star & Rosie got into a couple nasty fights over rawhide, so now it's off limits completely.

I don't give my guys rawhide much, but when I do I buy BIG ones and take them away when they get smaller. And they are always under close watch with any type of rawhide or edible toy.

Both Smokey & Maggie love the pressed rawhide treats. :)
but what they really are wild about are "pig ears". I have to
watch Maggie as she finishes her's first & bugs the heck out of Smokey to get his.:D

I would never give them unless I'm in the same room and can
moniter the action. The small pieces are taken away from them.

I don't know about fattening, but they are expensive.:eek:
My two would eat them all day long if I let them, but I only give
them one each ,maybe twice a week.

I have a question. I give Heidi the rawhide chips, are those ok to give to her? I'm kind of confused as to which ones are the best to give to her. These are what I give her, the chips I mean.

Every store around hear sells pig ears for about $1 per pig ear.....you can buy them in bulk at costco though for less. Nebo LOVES pig ears but he gets them very rarely. I have heard that they are quite fattening.

I give Nebo rawhide but never unsupervised. I prefer the large pressed rawhide over the thicker white kind. It takes him much longer to get through the pressed rawhide and he doesn't bite off huge pieces.

snowy loves pig ears and I think it helps her with teething problem. they are quite expensive indeed, sold for 50p at the pet shop which is about $1.

I never have given my Dog Rusty Rawhide for this reason I heard stories that unattended dogs have choked

I never give my dogs rawhides, they can be a real danger. The stories are true about pieces getting stuck in the animals throat and choking them. But what most people don't realize is that when a dog eats the rawhide and it goes to their stomach it's not always digested. This can cause serious problems. It can cause blockage and many other things. It can be treated by surgery if caught in time, but it has been known to cause death. Therefore I wouldn't give your dogs any rawhide at all. You also have to watch pig ears put I think you could give them to your dog every once in a great while. However my dogs both love the hard bones you can find at Wal-Mart.:)

My dog is good with hard bones, but the last time I gave them to my puppy (she is 1 year and 3 months), she was throwing them up all night. :eek: :(

Bones can also get stuck in a dogs throat, and as for digestion, I'm not sure if bone digests any faster than raw hide.

It really depends on the dog I guess. If you have a dog that likes to "woolf" down it's food, there is always a chance he could choke no matter what he/she eats. :confused: :)

I have heard that the Pig Ears are quite fatteing to our dogs, Lexi has never had any...its just like pork is fattening to us! LOL!:p

Lexi eats anything she can get her paws on! Its crazy! I have to watch her so carefully nowadays! She even tore through the drywall on oour walls! :eek:

The pig ears at Bulk Barn are quite cheap as well...just letting you know!

What does everybody suggest I give a HEAVY chewer when she is 8 months old and is like 12 in tall at the shoulders! :confused:

Lexi has tore through an "Indestructable" ball, the bright orange for tricky treats...the trick is we can't have rubber! The kong doesn't work either!

When a dog chews rawhide and swallows it,, it sits on the bottom of their stomach and goes to a 'goo' and is very hard to disgust. plus the preservatives can cause epilepsy. if you look one of those packages of rawhide bones,, it even says on it that they are raidiated as term of treatment.

defiantly need supervision with rawhides. As for your burring problem if your dog happens to burry them all the time.. what you can do is supervise them and not let them take treats/bones outside .. if they persist or do so when your not home then what I have had to do is get solid bones and put a screw in them and attach the screw to a chain attached to my house either in the inside or outside but the chain is not long enough to get to the dirt gravel or grass where she could try to burry it..

I bought Gracie a box of Cheweez from Pet Smart. They were recommended by a friend who said that they are vet recommended because they will dissolve in their tummy where as a lot of rawhide type treats will not. If they chew off a chunk and swallow they will just sit in their tummy and can cause major gastric problems. My friends yorkie was in the hospital for 3 days due to this...so she convinced me!! I think there are 4 or 5 in a box.

I have always heard that rawhide has too much calcium, which can be dangerous, and that some companies use bleach and other chemicals that can make it dangerous. My vet doesn't recommend it, but they are very picky. I give my toller rawhide maybe once or twice a week. She loves it and it only takes her a few minutes to make a 6 inch bone dissapear, the jaws of life couldn't make a bone that she couldn't chew through in minutes. I never leave her unsupervised though and I only buy the natural rawhide, not flavored or bleached. I always feel bad because my cocker is too old for rawhide, it makes her teeth bleed, so I get her the ground up and recompressed type, it looks like it's already been chewed and then shaped like a bone, it is easier for her to eat and break off in little pieces she can swallow. I used to give my dogs pig ears, 59¢ each at petsuppliesplus, but i heard that they carry bacteria and i really don't like the grease and smell. It's kinda gross anyway to have a pig's ear laying around, what's worse is that the store also carries snouts and turkey feet. eww. As for rawhide, so long as your dog is supervised, "let them eat cake", I mean rawhide.

I give Pandy bones all the time. I'm not sure if they are made out of rawhide...I assume that they are. She loves nothing more than to play and chew on those bones. I go through about 1 a week with her (the BIG ones). She has never had any problems such as throwing them up etc. She also likes the Cheweez bones..but even the big ones are like a treat for her. She chews it until it's gone and that takes all of 5 min. She likes bones!!! LOL

Neither of my two like rawhides, and I've never been a huge fan of them anyway, they seem to me like "processed food". I buy soup bones at the grocery store in the meat section and boil them for ten minutes, then store them in the fridge. They eat the marrow out of the middle and chew the beat hell out of 'em, they love them and I have never had a problem safety wise. I've been giving them those for about five years. They're also relatively cheap: The butcher where I buy them packages them in three's and it cost about $2.50 depending on the size (weight) of them.

p.s. to my previous post. Where I buy them, they are not always on display so I just ask the butcher (we're almost pals by this point) and he will get them out of the back.
