I see alot of post about diarhea on here. So I am creating a Thead on it.
Diarhea in animals can be caused by many things. Cats/Kittens get diarhea from MILK! Do NOT give a kitten Milk for atleast the first year. A little milk may be okay but NOT alot. Cats can NOT digest milk and are lactose interollant. That is why the diarhea occurrs. Just like in humans.
Food poisoning in Animals shows up as bloody diarhea!!! Instead of throwing up and generally feeling bad... Cats/Dogs have bloody stools. If this sympton appears out of the clear blue and goes away quickly then it is most likely a food issues. Give a little Pepto Bismal to help control it.
Parasytes/worms can cause diarhea. Most likely you will be able to see these. Examine the feces for any "Wigglies" or things that don't look like it came from their food. This will require a Vet visit. Look for any odd "Tape" coming out of the anal area. That is a sign of tape worm.
As for Cats not using their liter box when they have diarhea... Think about it? Are they REALLY potty trained like humans? No. They have the urge to go and they are going to go! It isn't lack of training and they don't hate you. It is pure animal instinct. Have you ever had a bad attack of diarhea and felt like you couldn't make it to the toilet? Animals have the same feeling.
Take the cats/dogs to the vet if the diarhea is accompanied by other symptoms of nausea or general malaise. Kittens/puppies have low immune systems. They get something and it can SPREAD quickly. ALWAYS isolate the sick kittens/puppies while they are showing symptoms or being treated. Parvo can take over quickly.
Watch the Animals diets!!! A sudden change in feeding or schedule may affect their stomachs. Gradually introduce new foods with their old ones. Cats or dogs can be allergic to eggs and yeast. My dog scooby is allergic to yeast. Look at the ingredients and compare if symptoms appear.
I am not a vet. I worked in a Pet store for year and got plenty of tips from owners and vets. These are just some "Home Remedies" to pass down. ALWAYS CONFER WITH A VET PRIOR TO FEEDING OVER THE COUNTER MEDICINES.
I hope this helps. Another tip: If you cat/dog does swallow something harmful and you need to induce vomitting. Give them a small amount (teaspoon according to weight) of Hydrogen peroxide. (The same stuff they use in toothpaste make teeth whiter) This should induce vomiting in about 10 minutes. My dog ate a batch of chocolate cookies behind my back!!! This came in VERY handy!!! Please take care of the pets!!! They are precious!!!
