View Full Version : Beavers like money
"No charges have been filed against the beavers, though their home was ransacked by the search."
From 2theadvocate.com, Louisiana, Beavers use bags of bucks for building dam (http://www.2theadvocate.com/stories/111504/new_money001.shtml)

Beavers - Mother Nature's Construction Engineers ;)
Years ago I volunteered at a little Sports Car Road Racing Course -
wound for 2 miles through the woods - beside a creek.
One fall Maw & Paw BEAVER moved in and built a Summer Cottage and
a lil pond...
Well, OK ... welcome to da Hood ...
Next year the KIDS needed a place... another pond and several more "Houses"
appeared... Ooooh-Kaaay...
Next year the GRAND-Kids needed places...
THIRD Level of Lakes appeared -
with MORE "Houses"... Hmmmmm ???
Spring Rains arrived... The Waters ROSE!
The Track was FLOODED for a quarter mile!
THIS was NOT Good! :(
The BEAVER WAR was declared!
Work Parties all Spring - Man vrs BEAVER!
We sacked, burned & pillaged on Saturdays & Sundays.
They *watched*
By Tuesday Afternoons the damages we wrought were repaired - water
flow was a mere trickle, and the water was again lapping over the
Race Track. They *smiled* :)
WE pouted & Fumed! :(
Races were cancelled...
A Friend agreed to bring in a MONSTER Track-Hoe Excavator...
Three days of Mechanized War reduced their Three-Level Lake system to
a mere *trickle* of free-flowing creek.
The Track-Hoe crawled up on it's low-boy and went home...
The Humans & Racers were Happie :)
A week later the Waters Rose AGAIN...
In two weeks we were FLOODED ...
They "smiled" :) and paddled about "Their" Lakes.
The only thing that seemed to work was if we LEFT the Track-Hoe
*parked* near the dams - the Beaver Army usually only did minor
repairs if the Mechanical Monster remained in sight. Load it up
to send it off to a Paying Job for it's owner - and the 4-Pawed Army
sprang into action and had the Race Track
flooded again within a WEEK!
Final Resolution?
A MONTH's worth of MAJOR Excavating!
We "deepened" the creek by about 8 feet - and piled ALL the dirt
between the Track and the creek - we built our OWN Dam!
(A Quarter Mile's worth!)
The Beaver Army then rebuilt THEIR Dams on the "other side" -
deep enough to "Keep em Happie" but overall low enough to
keep "our" Race Track dry!
