Well, today I got a cockatiel! I wasn't expecting to or anything, I went to Petland with my mom to buy Taffy a treat. Well, I went over to the cockatiels and put my hand in the cage to see if any would hop on. A beautiful yellow cockatiel with orange cheeks and gray on his wings hopped on my finger. After playing with him for about an hour my mom asked me if I wanted to get him. (YES!) So she called my dad, and well, now he is at home with me!

Now, all I need for him is a name! I can't think of anything and I know you PTers are good at picking out names! He is yellow with bright orange cheeks and grey on his wings. I would get a pic. but the camera isn't working.

:D :D :D

Yay, a new addition! :D That's awesome! I hope you get your camera working soon! lol
Name suggestions:
-Buddy
-Buttons
-Charmer
I'm not a bird owner (but I hope to be one), so I don't have many names. :) Other cockatiel owners are sure to reply!

Since tiels come from Australia, maybe I'll name him Boomerang? I'd still like to hear everyone else's ideas!

I was going to say Ozzy (you know, Australia?).

ChrissyCat, I really don't mean to offend you, but Petland is not the greatest of places to buy a pet. My biggest issue with them is that they sell puppies and kittens along with a multitude of small animals. Next time, consider buying a handfed cockatiel from a breeder? I don't mean to scare you, either. But unless your cockatiel was handfed, I'd get him checked by an avian vet ASAP. Parent raised birds usually do not "hop on". Anyhow, Good luck!

Thankyou for warning me! I know Petland isn't the greatest. I looked for breeders in my area and there aren't any. I even tried calling the breeder where my parents got their old cockatiel 20 years ago, but she stopped breeding. He was hand fed. :) My mom knows the assistant manager and she is a very nice lady who has birds of her own. The bird is healthy as far as I can tell, his eyes, nose, and dropping area are clean. He is active and likes to cuddle. :) The store just got him Thursday so I'm hoping two trips in just a few days won't stress him out too much.

Oh, well at least he's handfed. That means *somebody* cared enough to sacrifice their sanity to feed him every 2 hours LOL. If you ever want another cockatiel, you can go to American Cockatiel Society and search for breeder referrals.;)

Have you decided on a name yet?

Wow, that was sudden. Did you do any research?

Anyway, congratulations on the new addition. Your story almost made me cry - that was the same way that my NelNel came home with me.

I like the name Button. Good luck.

How about Sunshine or Charms?

We didn't research very much before deciding to get Roger Cockatiel, either. :o The very same thing happened with my daughter. That little fellow just climbed right up her arm and didn't want her to leave. I went and bought him the next day, after calling the same afternoon we were there and asking them to hold him for us. You'll be just fine and you will figure out the perfect name too. It might take a day or so, but you'll find just the right one, I'm sure!

Congratulations on your new Tiel!!!! :)

Thanks for snapping me out of it, Logan. Once I re-read my post, I sounded very rude.

Sorry, chrissycat. :)

I like the name Button. Good luck.

Actually, I have been researching Cockatiels and Conures for the past few months. :) I couldn't decide between the two so I just decided I'd let the bird pick me. Plus, my parents were worried about the Conure being too noisy. :p

So far 'No Name' seems pretty happy! Whenever I walk into or past my room he starts to chirp and sing. If I open his cage door he flies out onto my bed as best as he can. (his wings are clipped so he can't fly all that well) He has been eating well, drinking, and making a mess of his cage pretty fast! :p

I still need to look over the names, I sort of went through them real fast. I decided against Boomerang. That name lasted for all of five minute! :D

More tiel and naming updates later, hopefully with pictures!

Boomerang lasted for about 5 minutes after I posted that, but my dad still insists on calling him that. :)

Flamepony, they *think* he is a boy because of his bright cheek patches, but they also said that about my uncle's tiel who at 18 started laying eggs!

Still no idea what to name 'it'. I like Buttons, though. Have to try it out on him! :) Hopefully I won't be calling him Birdie for the rest of his life!

I think I'm going to name him Tas (or Taz, however I decide to spell it :D ) Because in Australia where cockatiels are from there is an animal called the Tasmanian Devil (sp?) and my little birdie has shown that he has a little devilish side. :p

Changed his name once again...

His name (and I'm sticking with tihs one!) Button! His orange cheek patches look like buttons, and he seems to like that name!

good choice!! :D there are also ways to tell if they are boys or girls:

*males have a more blueish tint to their beaks, females have more of a pinkish one
*females are usually a little less agressive then males, and girls make somewhat less noise
*males, most of the time, have yellow heads, instead of just a yellow cap. :)

Glad he's got a sticking name! :D Cant wait for the pix! :D

I *think* he is a boy just because it says they're more vocal, beleive me, he is the loudest cockatiel I have ever met! You walk past my door and he starts to SCREAM for attention! Plus, he has really bright cheek patches. But who knows, he could lay an egg in 20 years!:D
