View Full Version : Andy needs surgery

11-11-2004, 10:38 AM
I wish I had better news.

Andy needs surgery.

There is still a leak. :(

The OR was booked today so he'll either have surgery tomorrow or Saturday.

He's never had surgery before, so he's pretty scared.

*edit* Sorry for being so vague... I'm in a bit of shock.

His surgery will either be Friday or Saturday. Right now he's at his parents house resting. When they have an opening they'll call him. Pretty much he's on standby, but the doctor said the surgery is urgent, so hopefully they'll get him in sooner than later.

After the sugery he'll have to stay in the hospital for 2-3 days. After that, it's a 2-3 week recovery time.

Thanks again for the continued support.

Kim I can understand that must be scary! But keep your heads up. I am sure the white coats know what they are doing!

Sending best healing thoughts over to you and Andy:)

11-11-2004, 10:53 AM
Sending lots of prayer and good thoughts your way and of course to Andy that everything will be just fine.

I know he is scared, my husband had open heart surgery and he was very frightened, but he done really well during the surgery. He had lots of prayers and good thoughts for him as Andy has for him.

We are all praying and sending good thoughts to him and to you.

Good thoughts for a good surgery and a rapid recovery!

11-11-2004, 11:16 AM
I'm so sorry to hear this, Kimmy. I'm sitting here trying to think of something to say to make you feel better and I'm at a loss for words. I know you are probably so frightened for Andy and scared quite a bit yourself. Hang in there! I'm sure everything is going to be just fine.

I've had my share of surgeries and the only thing I can think of to tell Andy is to try and relax. I know that sounds silly but I find that if I can mentally calm myself down and make my body completely relax that things seem to go so much better and be less painful. I hope that you are able to be there with him before he goes into surgery too. It always helped me to have Alden's hand to squeeze whenever I needed too and also to make me laugh a little. Also, tell him not to be afraid to tell or ask the nurses if he needs anything. They are there to help him and make him as comfortable as possible.

Will the surgery repair the lung and then everything is expected to be ok? I sure do hope so. This is supposed to be such a happy time for you both and I hate that you are having to go through all this. I'll be thinking about you both and keeping you in my prayers.

Lots of good thoughts, prayers and wishes are sent to you and Andy... I now it is scary as my husband came very close to death in an accident earlier this year but doctors can do wonderful things so try not to worry.. love and hugs, Lilith

I'm so sorry to hear about Andy. You guys are in my thoughts and prayers.

Ask the hospital if they have Reiki Therapy. If they do, have them do it on Andy before he goes into surgery. It's relaxation therapy where he wears headphones that play relaxing sounds like waves, waterfalls, etc., and the massage therapist does a relaxing type of massage on him. Believe me, it works!! I had it done when I had my hysterectomy. They even let me wear the headphones into the OR. Please, check it out. It'll definitely help Andy during this stressful time.

My love and hugs to you both!

Oh Kimmy, I'm sorry to hear that Andy still has a leak in his lung. Surgery is a big deal, but it could be worse. He will do fine and will be home before you know it. Prayers and hugs are on the way for both of you.

11-11-2004, 12:21 PM
Prayers and positive vibes on the way for you all Kimmy. How scary.
When we have people with pneumothoraxes sometimes they have to go in a 'glue' the lung back together. What really surprised me was that they had sent him home with the chest tube!! Our patients stay in the hospital forrreeevver!!
Good luck and take care of yourself!

11-11-2004, 12:24 PM
I hope he gets in soon and is fixed up in no time!
I pray for you both!! Here I am scared out of my mind about a spinal tap... :o I can't imagine how he must feel :(

11-11-2004, 01:20 PM

11-11-2004, 02:32 PM
I will be thinking of you both, and Andy will be in my prayers.

My husband had surgery for the first time last year and I was a nervous wreck!!

I hope after the surgery and recovery that this means that everything will be fixed.

I am sorry to hear Andy is not doing better :( I totally understand the fear of a first surgery. I had a gall bladder attack Monday night, and now have surgery scheduled for Dec. 7 to have it removed. I am trying to come up with anyway possible to avoid it, but I guess we all have to face some type of surgery sooner or later.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Hopefully the surgery will go seamlessly and he'll be recovered in no time.

Please call if you need anything!

11-11-2004, 04:34 PM
Oh Amy. I'll keep you in my thoughts. I guess one good thing about my laproscopy is that they removed my appendix, so if it ever gave me problems, I wouldn't have to have surgery again.

11-11-2004, 05:02 PM
My thoughts and prayers are with you!

11-11-2004, 05:24 PM
Kim all good vibes and prayers for Andy - he must be so worried as are you and his Mum and Dad - I hope he gets the call soon and after a good op., makes a wonderful recovery.

11-11-2004, 05:30 PM
Prayers coming from Mass. too, that all goes smoothly with the surgery, and Andy will be feeling better soon.

11-11-2004, 05:48 PM
Andy will be in our prayers, maybe he'll get a cool scar from it? Visits with Sir Hury are never fun, tell him no screaming and NO biting the doctor, despite any advice he gets from certain furry members of Pet Talk.

Pssst - are we allowed to send him lots of fattening goodies for his recovery time? PM me details?

Sending you and Andy lots of positive wishes. I hope they can get him in sooner rather than later so he can start recovering soon. What a tough run for him! {{{hugs}}}

He reports to Crittenton Hospital at 10 a.m. and his surgery will be at Noon.

Thanks to everyone for the prayers and well wishes.

Karen - you have a PM. :)

Hot Newz *FLASH* from Andy's Mom >>

"Andy reports to Crittenton at 10am,
with surgery scheduled for 12 noon.
It sounds as if they worked him into the schedule
on the lunch hour."

Gives the image of the White Coats working with one hand -
and munchin on Hot Dawgz with the other hand! :p

Kimmy advises the actual surgery is just going to be a "slit"
in his side; with the time estimated to be about 20 minutes!

Let's all Pray it's a real Quick Fix!!

How to Send Andy
"Get Well Quick *Wishes*" >>

Here's where Andy will be for the next 2-3 days >>
http://www.crittenton.com/ (http://www.crittenton.com/)

I checked with the Hospital, and sadly :( they do NOT have any
way to receive and distribute E-mails to patients.

Kimmy will be staying with Andy's Mom & Dad - and CAN receive e-mails
there... So if you'd like to send Andy an E-Card or an E-mail ~

Use THIS Address =
ramanth @ gmail.com
You'll need to *remove* the *spaces* before and after the @ sign -
they're in there to prevent "mining" of the address from this page.

Kimmy will print them and personally *deliver* them to Andy.

If you'd like to send a Snail-Mail Card -
PM to "ramanth" or "Cinder & Smoke" for the Folks' Address.

And AFTER 6 PM Friday, you can try to ring Andy's Cell Phone -
which the Hospital *does* now allow to be used in patient's rooms.

Andy's Cell # is (248) 821-5127

Anothe option is to call the Hospital Gift Shop -
(248) 652-5000 & ask for "Gift Shop"

They will take a credit card over the phone;
have the usual Gift Shoppe Stuff;
and WILL *deliver* to "Andy Miller's" room.
Gift Shop HOURS are:
9:30 - 7:30 on M-F; but only
1 PM - 4 PM on Saturday and Sunday

Please say a lil Prayer for Andy tonight;
and be sure to think of him tomorrow at Noon!

{{{HUGS}}} to Andy and Kimmy!! ;)

/s/ Phred & the FurKids

11-11-2004, 06:58 PM
I really hope everything goes smoothly.
Please tell Andy that we're all thinking of him, hundreds of miles away, and that when he's recovered, he needs to eat all of the chocolate cake, doughnuts, etc.. that he wants. ;)

11-11-2004, 07:18 PM
Thanks for the update, Phred.

Kimmy, lots of hugs to your and Andy.

I hope that everything goes well. My thoughts will be with you.

Oh, I am so sorry that Andy will need surgery to get better. No surgery is easy I guess if it is the only way to make him better it has to be done. I will keep Andy, you and his family in prayers as you go through this today - and with the recovery time - that sometimes is worse than the surgery. The time always goes so slowly!

11-12-2004, 08:25 AM
Thanks everyone. :)

I just got off the phone with Andy and they are getting ready to head to the hospital.

I am SO nervous! I keep telling myself that it'll be okay over and over.

Thanks again for all the support. *hugs*

Quick Prayer for Andy ~
They're almost ready to start -
which also means they're almost done! ;)

On a side note...
I got this from Kimmy >>>

"My boss took one look at me this morning and
told me to take the rest of the day off.
So I'm outta here. :D

I'm not sure when I'll get to the computer next (maybe late tonight),
so I'll have you post updates as I know em."

Not sure how soon Kimmy will get to the Hospital;
but I'll try to stay in touch with her and post
Andy Uppy-Dates as we learn more.

11-12-2004, 11:07 AM
She went to work! I'd have been such a mess I wouldn't have even tried. Kim All in pray for all of you.

They got a "Late Start" - so at 1 PM Andy is still *IN* surgery ~

But that is NOT a problem!!

Kimmy is "on the road" headed to the Hospital and
just spoke with Andy's Mom.

The procedure should be just about completed when Kimmy arrives;
so we may hear something around 1:30 PM.

Andy should be in "recovery" for about an hour and a half;
them move to his room on the 8th Floor by 4 PM.

Still Time for a Prayer! ;)

More info when I get it!

Kimmy just checked in with the GOOD NEWS!

Not a lot of details yet;
but the Surgeon seemed *happy* and told them the leak was
"fixed" and the problem shouldn't return. :D

Andy will remain in "recovery" for another hour +;
them be moved to his room on the 8th Floor.

Prayers for a SPEEDIE Recovery!!

Andy's doing *FINE* still!! :) :D

I just had a lil chat with Kimmy - but the Ward Police had raided
the joint and kicked everyone out for the night -
so it was a brief chat!

Andy has some pain :( and gets the :eek: *Hick-Ups* pretty often -
THAT doesn't help the sore spots at all!
And he's on some meds that upset his tummy - so on a scale of 1 to 10;
he's not quite at a 10 yet! :p

Kimmy and the Folks are headed out for a byte to eat;
then she'll check in when she gets to Andy's Folks' House.

Andy could probably use another Purrayer or two or three -
I guess we should Pray for Comfort now - the medical crisis
seems to be well in hand. ;)

Here's Hoping for a Quite & Restful night for Andy!!

11-12-2004, 07:36 PM
That is wonderful news!! Get well soon andy!!!

11-12-2004, 08:14 PM

I'm so glad that Andy pulled through his surgery successfully! Definitely keep us updated as to his recovery!!!

Get some rest & take care!

11-12-2004, 09:37 PM
Thanks Phred for keeping everyone posted. I probably could of handed the phone off to Andy (he wanted to say thanks for the "Kia replacement" ;) ), but he was in intense conversation with the nurse at the time.

From what I can gather, they will be moving him in different positions during the night and having him get up. I guess if he just lays there there could be a risk of pnemonia or infection. :eek: :(

So he's not quite out of the woods yet.

They did say though that they anticpate he'll be moved out of the Critical Care Unit and into a new room tomorrow. Most likely the 5th floor.

Thank you all SO much for the continued prayers and support. It really means a lot to him and me. :)

Now, it's time for me to get some sleep.

11-12-2004, 10:17 PM
Rest well, Kimmy. I have been thinking of you and Andy all evening. I hope you botn rest peacefully.

I have not been posting in Pet Talk much lately but I have been lurking and following this thread. I wish I had the right words that could take away all of the fear you have right now. Just know that I have been praying for you both all along and you and I both know that with all these Pet Talk prayers happening Andy can't do anything BUT get better and be home with you soon.
