"Saving Private Ryan"

I just need to rant about this.:( Several stations are pulling the uncut version of Saving Private Ryan because of the strong language. This movie is meant to be a docu-drama, and show the D-Day invasion from a very personal and human point of view, naughty words and all. I think this is a sad commentary on the lack of proportion in this country when this movie, being shown to honor veterans of The Greatest Generation, and by extension, others, is under such controversy.

Sad that stations are pulling it. If people don't like the language they don't have to watch it.

I saw commercials last night on the local ABC station so as far as I know, they are airing it.

We own it though, so I can watch it with no interuptions. :)

Have they ever aired the un-edited version? It seems to me that if you're going to watch a movie about the war with all of it's horrors, you should expect to hear some bad language.

We own it too, and I'll probably either watch that or Band of Brothers tonight. :)

The interesting thing, I believe this movie already
has been shown on TV before.
If they are worried about the language why not
just show the movie at 9:00 p.m. when most
young kids are in bed.

Well it seems that many of the stations do not want to risk FCC fines for "indecent language". Here is a link to CNN that talks about it...

It is sad that some people would be making these types of decisions based on a senseless act committed by a foolish woman over a year ago...

I can't believe they would compare a ANY movie with graphic language (especially one such as "Ryan") to Janet Jackson's boob. People are such fools.

The movie has been aired on ABC twice, in 2000 and 2001, unedited. Only one complaint was received regarding offensive, violent, content.

Steven Spielberg has put in the viewing rights, that only completely unedited versions may be aired so we'll see how the stations get around that. Seems these affiliates are very fearful of FCC sanctions following the "wardrobe malfuntion" during last year's Super Bowl. Fox was recently fined a huge sum for an episode of one of their reality shows which aired 1 1/2 yrs. ago, BEFORE the Super Bowl:eek: It's a shame, because this is considered to the best, most accurate and most meaningful treatment of WWII ever made. And during each commercial break, ABC has in the past, aired a warning regarding the graphic nature of the film, the violence and the language.

I was unable to finish the movie, so I cannot really judge to much. It was to emotionally upsetting for me. The death was what bothered me, not the language.

But I do think that TV has gotten out of hand and way to laxed. I do not believe that sex, violence, and explicit language should be on TV. I think society is getting to comfortable with these things and it's ruining our kids. If people want to see it, they can go to the theaters or rent it. Even my son's cartoons seem tasteless compared to what I watched when I was a kid. Yeah, I monitor what my kid watches, but it is really difficult to do when it is everywhere you go.

I completely agree. TV has definitely gotten way out of hand...It's annoying how it's ok to promote teenagers having sex in TV serials, and there's a lot of white trash TV (reality shows, jerry springer...etc that don't promote any good morals) that, in my opinion, are more offensive than showing a movie like this. At least Saving Private Ryan is more realistic. It was disturbing, but then again...people actually lived through that trauma. :(

Yes. In fact, my son has seen Saving Private Ryan. He has a huge interest in history and wars. I don't have a problem with him seeing real life history (unless he was the type of kid to get scared easily). It's the pointless trash that frustrates me. I hate that I can't flick through channels with my son. Growing up, we sat as a family and channel surfed. Now, I'm always afraid of what we are going to bump into.

How can anyone compare such a good movie *It happens to be one of my favorites* to Janets boob? I believe that Saving Private Ryan is a very excellent depiction of a very harsh situation. Its niaeve of anyone to think that in that type of environment that people wouldn't use foul language.

I think if you're going to depict a historical event, you should have the deciency to depict it right, foul language and all.

Grrr, the FCC is as usual going after the wrong problem

The message I get is "Well kids are allowed to see robots beating the crud out of people but we can't let them hear cuss words!"

The FCC, if they want standards, should have well-defined standards inforced uniformly.

I fhink if ABC, who's owned by DISNEY, for Pete's sake, can show this... oh well it's done now.
