I got my jack russell terrier about a year ago when she was two months old. we tried house breaking the way our vet told us.. putting her in the create that's not too small or too big when no one is looking after her. Giving her treats when she goes to bathroom outside but she wouldn't finish going to bathroom because she just wants the treat... but when she turned 1 she started to start a bad behavior... she would go to bathroom in her create and eat it before we even see it.. We Say no in a loud voice when she goes to bathroom inside but she just gets nervous when we yell at her and she goes to bathroom in someother place, like on a chair, desk, under the bed , in her create. We take her out in the morning then when we bring her back in she goes to bathroom . Usually when we take her for a walk all she does is sniff around. We are Really trying hard to housebreak her and if she's not housebroken by next 6 month or so we have no choice but just give up on her..

Thank you

NEVER NEVER Give up on your dog! There is always a way. Unfortunately, I have no advice because I have never had a problem with housebreaking my dogs. I would post this question in general if I were you because I think that there would be more people that would read it and have more advice for you.

Have you tired the products out there that make the poo taste bad so they won't eat it?

Also they sell basket muzzles that you can cover the end with duct tape so when you pupper goes to eat the poo they can't get to it. They can still breath, and drink with this on but I would suggest just using the muzzle when she's outside so she can't eat her poo.

Those are all the suggestions that I have so far.

Jack russels can be a bit stubborn at times, but generally are fairly easy to house train. (I love JRT's :))

Are you taking her out often enough? Being a smaller breed & to be on the safe side I would not let her go no more than about 6 hours. The smaller the breed, the smaller the insides, therefore they can't hold it quite as long as a larger breed)

BUT for now, I would take her out even more often. I suggest starting over like she is a puppy.
ALWAYS go outside with her, give her a command to potty, use the same command everytime (I use "go potty")
When you see her go potty outside praise praise praise!!!!

Bring her out FIRST thing in the morning, approx. 20 minutes or so after all feedings & drinks, and generally every hour or so and immedietly before going to bed or to work.

If you HAVE to be away, it would be best to feed her at least an hour before you leave and to be on the safe side a few hours before bed time.

The last thing you should do before leaving the house or going to bed is let her out to potty.

If you are gone for more than 4-6 hours at a time maybe hire a dog sitter to visit in the afternoon or if you are at work, is it possible to stop by to let her out on your lunch break?

To get her to stop eating her feces, they do sell a few products for that, that work okay but you have to mix it in w/ their food and make sure they eat the feces from that. It makes the feces taste awful.

As for the muzzle, it might work, but I would be afraid she would still try to eat it with that on and make a mess everywhere.

Maybe consult w/ a trainer?

Good luck!

Yeah I agree with Iv4dogs. Start all over again as if she was a puppy. The treats also seem to be distracting her from doing what she’s suppose to, so replacing them with verbal praise is probably a good idea.
Also when you take her out, don’t walk around with her. Just stay put in one place and I’m sure sooner or later she’ll get bored enough to do her business. Then, praise her to the skies as if she’d just invented a cure for cancer!..
Next time go to the same spot and wait wait wait until she does what she’s suppose to and then PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE.

Good luck. :)

Make sure the crate is only big enough for her to lay down and stand up to turn around..and they are less likely to go then. Also have potty parties..lol..when they go where they are supposed to make sure you give plenty of hoopla over it! I clap and go yea and gracie gets all excited! I took her out every hour when I was home at first, now we are out about every 2 and half hours..(she is 5 months now)
About the treats...Gracie gets one, too, after she goes, but we come in the house and I am still praising and telling her "let's go get a treat" and now she comes in and goes in the kitchen to the cabinet where her puppy cookies are and sits..little tiny bone cookies.don't give it to her while you are still outside.
I never leave her in the crate for more than 4 hours. I think she could probably hold it a little longer, but I would hate for her to have to. Fortunately I can come home at lunch for an hour and she gets to play and exercise.
Hang in there and don't give up..its 2 steps forward and 3 steps back til they get the hang of it! Good luck!
