The Blood Moon rises this year on Wednesday, Oct. 27th. At first it will seem pale and cold, as usual. And then ... blood red.
It's a lunar eclipse. Beginning at 9:14 p.m. EDT (6:14 p.m. PDT), the moon will glide through Earth's shadow for more than three hours. Observers on every continent (map) (http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/LEmono/TLE2004Oct28/image/TLE2004Oct-Map1.GIF) except Australia can see the event: The pale-white moon will turn pumpkin orange as it plunges into shadow, becoming eerie red during totality.

So cool! I'll have to tell my brother. He's got a good telescope and will be able to see it a lot better. I'll have to check it out.

Be sure to check it out Sara!
A telescope is not required, but it's cool to look thru one if you have access. I sometimes use binoculars and my camera zoom. :)

Wow that sounds so cool... but right now here the clouds are as thick as soup outside. Unless they break up later today, I guess I won't get to see it :(
No luck, looks like the forecast for my area is cloudy all day and tonight and then rain for the next three days.

Thanks for the heads up, Kimmy! We've had rainy weather here too....so I'm not sure we'll have a clear view.
I was told that Blood Moons were caused by volcanic dust but now I better understand HOW! Very cool!

It's still very cloudy here, as thick as this morning. I hope some of you who get to see it can get some pics of it :)

Just to tell you guys, acording to space.com, the Lunar Eclipse offically starts at 8:06, but that's when it enters the peumbra the moon won't look any different you can tell it starts to change at 9:14. I hope I don't sound like a know it all, I just thought it was a useful bit of information.
Should be interesting to see.
Have a look here for the details: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6345294/?GT1=5472

On the way to church tonight, I noticed how full & beautiful the moon was. Then, somebody told me about the eclipse tonight, and I just went and checked it out, and it's already happening, and totally beautiful. All I have are binoculars and it is too bright to look through them as it hurts my eyes. But I'm totally fascinated.
Thanks for starting the thread, Kim!! :)

For some reason when it all started, the moon was a bright orange and now when I look out it's white....

Way cool, Kay! I've just gotten a break in the clouds and got to see a bit of it. It's very bright in the telescope! Like Anna said, it hurts to look at it.
I hope it goes red for us!

Kay, that's an awesome picture. To see it better I've got all the lights out in the appt. What a show. Next one won't happen until 2007.

From where I stand, the moon is just starting to reveal herself again. Didn't see much orange or red :( but still a good show of the heavens.

It was too cloudy here to see much of anything. :( I'll hope for better luck in 2007... :p
Thanks for posting the picture, Kay! :)

It was cloudy all evening so at 9:15 I wasn't very hopeful, but went outside to be welcomed by a clear night sky and the eclipse starting. :D
My pictures didn't turn out. :( I even tried the flower option. Kay, your picture is gorgeous!
The moon was a reddish hue for quite awhile. My parents and I admired it with the binoculars after it had gone full. :)

I saw it too - cool! When I first looked it was like Kay's picture. The next time I looked it was all orangie red and I think it was starting to reveal itself again. Unfortunately I have a ton of schoolwork to do so I just took quick peaks to watch the progress. Kimmy, I never thought of the binoculars - duh! :o

Oh I thought for sure some of you would get some great shots of the red moon so I didn't even take the camera out. It was a beautiful red here, and for quite a while too.

Clear skys here last night so I had a magnificent view of the eclipse. Very impressive when it got so very dark.
My husband laughed when I assumed a surfer's pose - one arm in front of me (pointing towards the moon) and one arm behind me and declared,
"we're in alignment!"

W:cool:W!!
Thanks for the Heads Up, Kimmy!! ;)
We had a nice mix of high, thin clouds that passed in front
of the Moon throughout the Eclipse - just enough clouds to
highten the beauty - but never blocking the vew of the Moon for more
than a few minutes at a time. :)
*I* was impressed ~ can't say the same for the Dawgs! :p
"DAD! WHAT?? are you *lookin* at!???
Whutz a E-Klipse, Smokey??"
"We" parked on the causeway over the BigLake - nice and *dark*
except for the car and truck traffic that passed ~
"Hey Dude - turn yur headlites off -
Dad's watchin da E-klipse!" :D

Here in "sunny" California I was able to see it disappear but then the next set of storm clouds rolled in (it rained, with thunder and lightening all night!) so I did not get to see it reappear. :( I kept going outside to look for it and one gray boy managed to sneak out the door once... Fortunately it was too wet for him...
Photos please!

We got to see it on the way to California and it was so beautiful! We had the BEST view! No clouds or trees as we were on the highway. It was so awesome to see. I called to friends back in OR but it was too cloudy for them to see it there. I took some pictures of it so I will try to get them uploaded today sometime. :) So awesome!
