View Full Version : Smokey's Not Feeling Well

I'm really starting to worry about Smokey.:( He Has eaten
only 1/2 cup of food in the past three days. He's always been
a picky eater, but has never not eaten all day. He drinks water
like mad, but won't even take a dog bisquet. I called the Vets
office (Dr. not in, but office open for shots, etc.) and made an
appt. for tomorrow morning at 8am.

He's "leaked" a bit in the house, which is not like him at all, so
I'm thinking maybe a bladder infection? He's got me worried &
I'm keeping a eye on him. Good wishes are welcome.

Poor Smokey:(

I don't know what it could be, but refusing food like that can't be good, I'm sure.

I'll be thinking of dear Smokey, and praying for him to feel better.

Please let us know what the vet says.

Thanks for prayers & good thoughts for Smokey.I was thinking
maybe he felt a little left out since getting Maggie, so I took him
on a solo trip to PatsMart yesterday. He loved it & rode well in
the car & acted fine in the store. I've evn tried feeding him late
at night when Maggie's asleep, but he just turns up his nose.:(

Maybe I should have taken him to the Vets yesterday, but he's
not acting "sick". I don't know what else to try, so he's off to
see the Dr. in the morning.

Oh Liz, I was so distressed to hear that Smokey wasn't feeling well. Like you, my first thought was that perhaps he might be reacting to the changes in his life. Hopefully it's something minor and with a little help from the vet, he'll be back to his old self in no time. We'll be thinking of you all tomorrow. Please check back after the visit and give Smokey and Maggie May, a big hug from me. Get well soon Smokey!!!

Has Smokey been drinking really a lot of water as if he can't get enough? He probably just has an infection my friends dog just had that and she needed to flush him, I'm not sure how she did that but she said it worked. You might want to take a urine sample with you so the Vet can check for this when you take him in. Hope all goes well at the Vet and it will be nothing serious. We will sling some basset drool his way and some prayers too. Keep us posted on his visit to the white coat.

Took Smokey in to the Vets this moring to get checked out.
He has a temp of 104 (slightly elevated) & after a blood test,
the Dr. said his creatinine level is elevated. He has a kidney
infection ,loose stools & is dehydrated.:( The Vet said it was too
soon to say there was any kidney damage done, but put Smokey
on a broad-spectum antibiotic. The Dr. wants to see Smokey again on Wednesday morning. Doc gave Smokey an injection
of the antibiotic ,so hopefully he should feel better quicker.

Doc did say the blood test had him very concerned. We have to
take a "wait & see" attitude, till he checks him again.Smokey
didn't make a sound while he was poked & prodded, leg shaved
and a shot.He's such a sweetie.:)

Liz, I hope that Wednesday morning's report will be much more positive, and that the antibiotics will do the trick for sweet Smokey. Hang in there!

Well Smokey, I'm glad to hear you were such a good boy at the vet's office. I bet you knew it would make you feel better.

I'm sorry about the infection, I hope that this can be treated with the antibiotic quickly, and Smokey will be back to his old self in no time:)

I'll be thinking positive for dear Smokey, that everything will be ok, and that all infections go away.

Thanks for the prayers. :) I must admit when the Vet came
out front to the reception area with the printout of test results,
and said "This doesn't look good" , my heart sank a little bit.

I never thought this problem could be anything but a minor
thing. Smokey's never really been sick before. I can't wait to get

Smokey took his meds last night & this morning wrapped in a piece of braunschweiger. He even ate a few dog bisquets. No
real food unfortunately. :( He went to bed (in the big bed)
around 7pm & stayed quite all evening. I kept Maggie busy with
a few new chew bones so she wouldn't bug him. He seemed
exhausted & didn't want to play at all. He acted a little better
this morning (more alert) but still wouldn't eat anything.

I'm hoping the vet will be able to tell me something positive
tomorrow.

p.s. It was so cute, when Smokey went into bed, Maggie(who's
not allowed in the bedroom yet) curled up and took a nap in the
hallway just outside the bedroom door. :)

Thanks for the update Liz. It's only been a day, so let's hope that by tonight/tomorrow morning, Smokey will regain a bit more of his appetite. Poor Smokey:( At least he took his meds and a few cookies. You go the vet tomorrow, right? All paws and fingers crossed for a little good news...And Maggie, what a good lil sis you are to your new brudder:) How sweet:) Give the kids hugs for me please, Liz.

The Vet check Smokey out again today. They took more blood
and checking his temp, etc. Doc said the blood evaluation does
not show any dramatic changes. Still high on white cell count.
He's still concerned (so am I) that Smokey still isn't eating. Doc
gave Smokey a bowl of wet food in the office, but Smokey didn't
want any of it. :( I'm supposed to continue with the anti-biotic
& he gave me some sulfasalazine to take 2x a day also.

The Vet wants to see him on Friday morning again. He told me
to tempt Smokey with chicken, cheese, baloney or anything else
that he once liked as a test to get him to eat something. If this
fails, Smokey will get an x-ray to check for blockage. Smokey
does seem more alert & perky this morning, so I'm hoping if he
stays on the meds a few more days, it might make a difference.

It's quite a scene at our house at feeding time, Maggie will eat
anything not nailed down.LOL and I "beg" Smokey to try anything.

Please keep sending up with prayers for Smokey. He's lost 4 1/2
lbs. :( Liz.

Prayers on the way for you and Smokey!

I know when I want my dogs to eat, all I have to do is open a can of Tuna Fish! All I do is put the water on their food and it's GONE!!!!!

Sudilar
10-20-2004, 01:49 PM
I can truly empathize, Liz. Hugs. I've cried many a time in the past with Killian. At one time he lost 15 lbs. in 2 weeks when liver disease was first diagnosed.
Braunschweiger sometimes works, salmon with oil, peanut butter, tuna, cheese....
Good luck on finding something. Which anti-biotic is he on? Sometimes that will give him a stomach ache.
My heart and prayers are with you and Smokey.

Oh, no! I just found this thread and as I was reading through it, I was hoping that by the time I got to here, the news would be that Smokey had regained his appetite. :( The weight dropping so fast is what Hannah experienced with a few days of not eating as well when she was in the veterinary clinic several years ago. At least Smokey is staying hydrated and as soon as he feels a bit better, his appetite should return. I hope you are able to get the medication down. We all send our love.

Smokey did eat some last night & this morning.:) It was
only a hand full of kibble mixed with Mighty Dog chicken/gravy.
He's had his second dose of the sulfa drug to lesson inflamation
in his intestines. Smokey did barf up some white fomey stuff
after eating this morning, but I think that's because his stomach
hasn't had food in so long.

He's playing with Maggie some, but still seems a little tired. I
took today & tomorrow off from work to be around him more.
He can't seem to hold his pee for more than a few hours & has
been having accidents in the house. :( It makes him feel terrible
when he does this so I'm going to stay around to let him out
more often & keep an eye on him.Hopefully, with time & the meds, he can continue to get better every day. :)

Thanks for being here for encouragement & prayers guys.:)

Smokey is doing much better today.:D The Vet called me early this morning before our appointment to see if he was eating &
how he acted otherwise. I gave the Vet a good report & so
Smokey didn't have to go into the office. I did have to go pick up
more of the sulphasalezine RX, as he has to stay on that for a
while longer.

I really hate to ask this but the drinking water like he hasn't had any for days part, has he been checked for diabetis? It could be from the meds but I had a dog that developed diabetis and that was one of the symptom. You might want to ask your vet about this if he hasn't already been checked. Hope it's just the meds making him so thirsty. We are still keeping him in our prayers.

:) Not to worry guys, Smokey is feeling 100% better now.

I think I must have missed the early warning signs of his problem
because I thought maybe it was Maggie making the pee spots
inside the house. It was only when he stopped eating that it
dawned on me what was really going on. He's doing great now,
even slowed down on the water & only drinks normally. It was
the very first time he ever was really sick before & it was pretty
scary. I'll be sure to deliver the hugs & kisses anyway. Thanks.:)
