I know some of you have *built* guinea pig cages, bunny cages and such, and I just wondered where you got the materials? I know some of the materials are like... hard to explain, but you can put them into any shape? You know what I am talking about? I think Wolfie has used them... some rattie folks might know what I'm talking about. Like you get a couple square pieces and you can build them however you like. I was wondering where you got them. :) Thanks.

they are organizer cubes, you can get then at costco, target, staples, superstore, wal-mart... their are differnt brands of them, a common one used is neat idea cubes, where I live only one brand is avaliable, and they are just called organizer cubes lol you can use the conectters to just make like a square or rectangle, but you can use zip ties to make then virtually any shape you want. the base of the cage is generally coroplast, which you can get at any sign store, and at some home building stores.

like this?

go to cavycages.com and they can tell you how to make it and such. Where to get the cubes and if you want to use chloroplast they can tell you where to get it too. For the cage I built Thelmer I just put carpet under it.

I'll see if I can find a pic...

I ended up taking off theat side part b/c she could open the door that was right there and get out so now she just has the big tall part. :)

I made my guinea pig cage out of them, and the outdoor playpen. I got mine at Target - they're called "wire storage organize-it." They're over by the hardware. It's $11 a package (well worth it!)

here's the pen I made:

I don't have a photo of the pig's to show you though... but for the cage you need to put down a bottom. like cali and rottie said. the coroplast is kind of hard to find though, and it isn't cheap (it cost me $35), but for the size cage you can make it's worth it!

Rats (and Ferrets) can fit through such large holes, they do not make good cages for them.

But

They make WONDERFUL rabit cages!!

They're very nicely priced these days. Back when we started building Thelmer's cage, they were closer to $20 a package.

I made my cage out of wood. I bought it from my school. :)

So would a cage like RottieLuver's be okay for Charlie?? I just want something simple, and I can attach a few sticks so she can be outside.

Is Charlie a piggie or a bunny? If he's a bunny, make sure to give him a couple of levels to jump up on. If he's a piggie, don't worry about giving him anything more than a ground floor. :)

Although pigs can enjoy a second story too!:) Mine have one, and practically spend more time up there than on the bottom level. :)

Charlie is her female cockatiel. :)

Wouldn't the holes be too big for a cockatiel? The spacing is quite wide on my cubes, a cockatiel could easily stick its head through.:)

I'm not sure if a cage like that would be ok for a bird. The openings in the grids might be to big, Charlie could get her head stuck or foot, etc. A commercial bird cage might be better.

I could never get our pigs to get up to the second story. I guess they're just lazy. ;)

I wouldn't think a cage like this would be suitable for a bird. The holes are a little too big.

wow! thelmer, your cage is very impressive! :D I was considering buying my buns a cage from leith petwerks (http://www.leithpetwerks.com/), but they are so expensive when I could just make something like that & have it totally customized! Ive seen instructions for the neat ideas cubes cages before, though it always seemed so confusing. was it pretty easy to figure out? btw, how wide is thelmers cage? like 4 ft? its be great if you had some close ups. ;) right now my buns are just in an ex-pen on the floor, but they take up a lot of space & make a lot of mess, and I want to get them up off the ground, so if I build something like that Id need to get a table or dresser or something wide enough to put it on.

Veegan- My bunnies have aa cage made out of the same thing. I used Zip Ties to put my together and it was VERY easy to do!

My dad built a bottom for it from wood and then we went to Lowes and bought Lanolium (SP) for the bottom of it! My buns LOOOOVE there cages!

I wouldn't think a cage like that would be safe for a tiel. The holes are too big. He could easily get stuck/caught and get injured. I wouldn't take the risk.
