View Full Version : ear mites ad mange-friends dog
ok, my friend, the one who has shadow, their other dog, a golden named dakota has ear mite, those I know how to deal with and showed them how to clean his ears, but he also looks to have a little mange, which my friends mom got from him, ok, I know about invermectin(sp?) and I told them about that, take him to the vet for that and get it checked, I am pretty sure it mange, but always good to check, plus they woul dhave to get the medicine lol but if Shadow gets it what would you use? because I read your supposed to be very weary of using invermectin on shelties and collie, but shadow is almost all sheltie...

The drug sensitivities you are concerned about are genetic in nature, and are not guaranteed to occur in all collie or sheltie puppies.
IF your dog picks up mange, then it would probably still be possible to try invermectin at 1/10th it's normal dosage and gradually titrate up. Your Vet might have an idea as to where to start.
In remembering back to when my Barney had his demodex mange, the first two doses were sub-doses to see how well he tolerated the invermectin. Which is probably a wise way to give such medication to any breed of dog.
P.S. Barney is part black lab, and who knows what else.
thanks guys, I aked my mom when she got home(she was at a flyball tourny all weekend) she said the sheltie, collie thing is due to a defective gene, she said that they have a test now to see if the dog has that defective gene. , so if shadow does get the mange from Dakota, she will have to be tested for the defective gene first, because if she has it then the invermectin could make her very sick or even kill her(shadow is 8 years old) she is pretty healthy so she probibliy wont get it, but I told them to keep checking her just in case. I also told them that because Dakota has big droopy ears they will have to clean them periodicly after that with the rubbing alcohol/vinager mix to keep em clean, currently they are using the mix I made for them, plus Vit. E oil to help smother the ear mites.
