I am thinking about getting a hedgehog soon (maybe in the next couple months) I was wondering a few things about them. I Breed mealworms, and I have a never ending supply of crickets lol. So treats are no question ;). How big of a cage do they need? I dont want to feed a cheap cat food, what is a good brand to feed? How often do you bathe them? Should i goto a breeder or petstore? What kinda temprament should i look for when perchasing? What is a better sex, male or female?
thanks

GOOD LUCK!
I used to have one. Sweet- but you really can not handle them a lot.

actually they can be handled, if you catch them at the right part of the day :). at around 6 or so they will start to roam around the cage looking for food and that would be the best time to handle them. they dont like being woken from a sleep. which is understandable. :)

An old friend of mine used to have a hedgehog.
I'd reccomend getting them from a breeder, and experienced one. It would be good to get a positive reccomendation for that breeder. I know too many people who have gotten hedgehogs from the local petstores that have died in less than a month because of un known problems. But it could just be my pet store! (Or I have friends who don't give a care if their pet sits in its cage for its life....)
Good luck! And if you do get one, I want pictures!:p

i went around town today and looksed at hedgehogs. I put one on hold for tomorrow. I am not sure if I want it though, I inspected it and it has a fleshy flab of skin hanging down from its elbow.. I just lost a rat to cancer so i dont want to get into that again.. :(
I check out two other petstores in my area but their hedgies were VERY VERY agressive and wouldent even come out from the tight ball they were in, they were thrashing and grunting at me. it wasnt very pleasent...
I am very discouraged about it all now.. I really want one but now a unhealthy one.. ya know?

I would say wait, they don't sound healthy and the last thing you need (or anyone needs) are vet bills! The right animal will come along if you give it time.
