She is on Prednisone once a day now, instead of twice. And it's for 10 days first , and then change it to every other day. But.... she is not eating as much, so she may have to go back on the twice a day. How long can cats or any animal be on this stuff and live ? I hate to see her not eat. On the 2 a day she was a little piggy !!! But we will just watch her and see how it goes.
What do you all do if you "HAVE" to go out of town for a few days and your pets need meds? I'm already planning how to get people here for the holidays instead of us going there, but I won't be able to do it this way for years to come. And p[people, family, my Dad, just does not understand that I can not leave her because she needs meds. He says have someone come over. First off, she would hide the whole time we're gone and they couldn't even find her. She doesn't like people. Only the Daddy and the Mommy. And a boarding house or the vet just doesn't seem like the right thing to do unless it was a "real;" emergency and we both had to go. Let me know what you all do.
Thanks Katz

I have been fortunate that when I have had to go out of town my guys don't hide (when it comes to food). So I have no words of advice for you on that account.

If she travels well, can you take her with you when visiting family? She would probably be content to stay in the bedroom where you are sleeping.

Peanut has been on Prednisolone for a few years now. 1/2 a pill a day. They say it's not good for their kidneys, but so far she has had no problems what-so-ever....knock on wood.

We go out of town all the time and both Tubby & Peanut need meds, so I have a pet sitter come in once a day. When Peanut had a UTI she needed antibiotics twice a day, so then I had the pet sitter come in twice a day - $14.00 (+ tip) a trip. She spends something like 1/2 an hour with them, cleans the litterbox, freshens food and water and brushes or plays with them. She also gets our mail which is nice - and some will even water plants, etc. So, if you're gone for a week, it gets kind of expensive, but I figure my babies are worth every penny. :)

Thanks for the uppydate Katz. Please give Kelcee some smoochies from me.

I have been in that situation before where I had to go out of town and Specks had a UTI. Unfortunately the only ones I had to look after them had no experience giving meds, so Specks was boarded at the vets. Not my first choice, but the only one I had at the time.

Now, I refuse to go out of town if either one needs meds, and you are right, most people just don't understand.

BTW Debbie, I cat-sit for free for my friends. I do the gardening, water plants and mow the lawn if necessary. Too bad I didn't live closer, but then again, you can take them with you now. :)

I've never been in the situation where I had to leave my cats while they needed meds. I always have one of the responsible kids round about come in and feed them if we are away, we are very lucky with our neighbours. Our cats are terrified of anyone but us though, and if they needed meds, I think my only option would be to board them at the vet. I wouldn't like to ask any neighbour to have all their skin clawed off so my cats could stay in their own home.

Thanks guys. Kelcee hates everyone that comes here, even if we are here too. We used to have the guys next door look in on her but that made her more scared. Well she hates the car too. Except on the way home. I'll postpone everyone as long as I can and then when we really have to go I'll have to rent a mini van and keep the pups away from her. Maybe she might like to stay on my lap or in the BIG dog crate. Guess I'll cross this bridge when I come to it.
She doesn't eat nearly the same on one pill as she did on two. So we'll see what happens next.
Thanks for all your input.

I've never had to leave my furkids while they've needed medicine but one time I had surgery and was home but unable to give my RB Pepper his daily meds. Luckily my roommate was able to do it for a few days until I felt better. I'm sure you'll be able to work something out. Good luck.:)

I hope she starts to eat better without the pred. but it is still good to hear that she is improving. If I needed to leave a cat that needed meds I would board it with the vet. To me they are the most qualified. I have hider cats also and they would need special arrangements as well.

Well she eats a moves around a lot better on 2 pills a day. They are 5 mg. but hopefully she will stay theyway she is now at least, with a little weight on.
I thought the vets would be the best bet in an emergency too. At least they know how to give pills !
Leroy (RB) had pills the last 18 mths of his life. I didn't go any place. I made everyone come to me. I flew home for Christmas in one day and back that night. Now my Dad is 80 and can't make the 6 hr drive, he thinks he can. We know he should not. And he wouldn 't hear of having me send him a plane ticket. But as I said before , we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.
Thanks Katz

Is Kelcee still doing OK?

Would your vet be able to board her for you if you had to go away? We do that at work for medical cases all the time.

There are a lot of animals at work on pred, it seems like some are going to always be on it. I've heard that animals tolerate it much better than people.

Glad she's doing better. :)

She sure does better on 2 a day. She has been on one a day for the past 10 days and slowed down a lot, and not eating near as much, but still drinks more. She sleeps a lot too, about as much as before the pills. She is now starting the every other day for10 days. But I'm sure I will have to go back to the twice a day to keep her eating.

I got another new camera and she moves when I come wihth it, even though I don't use a flash, she just doesn't want to be bothered with having to look up. Poor girl.

Tom stayed home tonight and said she was in bed most all night. She just is sleeping her life away. I'm sure we will go back on 2 pills.

Here is the pictures I took of her today.
