Tandoori Cockatiel!

S/he came home last night and we've done lots of bonding. Very sweet bird! I got a nice grooming this morning:) S/he's been eating normally (I was surprised) and s/he would MUCH rather be with me than alone!

On with the pics! (sorry, I took them while holding Tandoori)

P.S. For those of you who don't know what Tandoori is, it's an Indian way of cooking in a clay oven. When you have something cooked in it, for instance chicken, you call it Tandoori Chicken. This is my favorite dish at the local Indian restaurant! You pronounce it tan-door-ee.

S/he is beautiful. Tandoori looks just like my Alex :D. Congratulations!

PS. At a glance I'd say Tandoori is a girl. Her cheeks are really dull. Plus, Alex is a girl and her cheeks look identical.

Here is Alex. This is the best pic I have of her here at work. This was taken when she came home after her overnight stay at the hospital. She almost died, so I think she looks pretty good considering. I think she looks like Tandoori, just older. Alex is definitely a girl, and as you can see that's why I think Tandoori is too.

Alex does look a lot like Tandoori! I've had this "feeling" that Tandoori is a girl. She had the least yellow out of all of the birds in the clutch, and she has barely made a sound. I've been calling Tandoori a "she" at any rate, and will probably continue this practice unless proved otherwise! I mean, I've got a 50/50 chance, right?

Thank you, everyone, for welcoming Tandoori!

Tandori is very pretty. Much like my Fuzzy Grape Nutt. I know she is a girl because she has laid many eggs:eek:

OMG!!!!! Tandoori? HE HE HE!!! That is the CUTEST name, and the funny thing is, I never thought of it. :p My parents are originally from Pakistan, and our food is very similar to Indian, so we eat *Tandoori Chicken, and Tandoori Naan, and Tandoori everything* quite often. I burst out laughing when I saw what you named her. Very cute. :p

Maybe my next tiel will be Biryani or something. *laughs*

She's adorable!

Tandoori is cute! I agree with My Peanuts it does look like Tandoori is a female. He/she reminds me alot of my RB cockatiel BirdBird.:)

She is beautiful!!!! Tandoori looks very much like my Milly. I think that she is probably a female, based on the way her tail feathers look. I just went and sneeked a peek at Milly and her tail feathers are identical (notice the "bars" on the underside). I knew for sure when mine were mating and ultimately had those babies!

Good luck with your new Tiel!!! :)

I couldn't be happier with our tiel. I would recommend one for everyone!

As for the food names for tiels, I can only comment on us. It's our theme! We now have Porkchop, Applesauce, Muffin, Marshmallow, and Tandoori. (The fish don't have names!)

Devon! Tandoori is absolutely gorgeous!! Are Tiels large birds? I can't really get an idea of the size. What do you mean by getting a good grooming. (remember I am bird stupid:rolleyes: ) I love the name and those pretty rosy cheeks on the Tiels. I bet she looks so pretty in that white cage. Sounds like you are having a great time and enjoying your newest critter. I hope to see more pictures - maybe with you in them so I can tell the size better?? Congratulations!!!! She is a beauty:D

Tandoori is a very pretty girl, lovely soft colors, and a smart girl for having chosen a Pet Talk home to belong to! Congratulations all around!

Mom,

Tandoori is being a stinker, so I haven't gotten good size comparison photos. If I perch her on my thumb she stands about as high as my fingers do. Then she has a tail about as long as her body. She's bigger than a parakeet by quite a bit.

By grooming... I mean just that! She got into my hair and ruffled it and "cleaned" it. Just like some cats do. Or if you've seen a bird cleaning themselves.

She's not happy that I put her back in her cage, but she was walking around to my back no matter how many times I moved her! She can be very stubborn. She likes chewing my ring, and will seek it out if I hide my hand. Sometimes I take it off so I can get her to focus on other things.

Mom posted a picture of Fuzzy Grapenut earlier in the thread, and let me tell you that little goofball of feathers taught me a lot about tiels! Cockatiels are pretty small birds. (But have huge huge attitudes lol). Moms tiels like to groom each other especially after a good water misting. Moms Teils LOVE being misted with water, does Tandoori or have you even tried that yet? At first, moms gang was really POed at the prospect of getting a bath but on that first REAL hot day of the summer they learned to really love it!

She's awesome!!! What do Muffin and Marshmallow think of her?

Indeed, Tandoori is a girl. Male grey cockatiels have almost a completely yellow face. Female greys are almost all grey in the face. Another confirmation is if she has spots on the underside of her flight feathers.

I've read, though, that boys can look like girls until their first molt at 6-9 months of age. This is what they told me at the pet shop, too. She's three months old right now, and was only weaned a week ago. Is this not true?

Determining the sex of the young cockatiel is not always easy; it often consists of an educated guess. The males and females of the normal greys and cinnamons are identical when young. They show little or no yellow on the face and both have large spots under the wings on the long flight feathers. As the males approach maturity and molt into adult plumage, usually at six months to a year, they lose their under wing spots and the facial area becomes mostly yellow. The orange cheek patch stands out clearly against the light colored head. The females continue to look like the young birds after molting. They retain their under wing spots and have very little yellow in the facial areas. They have the orange cheek patch but against the darkness of the surrounding plumage it is less obvious.

It is true. ILoveMyAbbyGirl's Charlie TOTALLY looked like a female when she got him, but now he's brightened up, and almost positively, a boy. They all look like females as babies. :p Unless you get them DNA sexed, its hard to know for sure until after their first molt.

I was just so confused! I had two different things told to me. Hope I didn't hurt anyone's feelings. I just wanted to know if we could be sure about her sex.

Tandoori will be four months old on the 25th!
