come command..

i want to really start working on the "come" command with kodie before i start obeidience(spl?) class again.i've just started today again and i did it off leash,and when he comes i would give him a treat,just a little bit though,but he got out today and he wouldnt come when we called him.so im really worried if he gets out again that we wont be able to catch him:( .so anyone know a good tehnique(spell?!?) to teach him that command??

When I took an Obedience Class with Daisy, the instructor taught us this technique. We used choke chain collars, and when the choke collars were on the dogs, we put them in a "Sit, Stay" position, and walked a few feet away. The owners than said "Fido, Come!" [replace Fido with dog's name] and if they didn't come when you called them, you did a quick snap of the leash [called a "correction" when using a choke chain] and sooner or later the dog would learn to come when called. You could use treats to lure them, or as a reward when they listened, but our instructor was strictly on a praising method, with no treats. It worked for us. :)

thanks alot! Kodie starts his class again on the 10th for 6 weeks.the first time we took him,we did the leash with the choker,and he did ok.but thanks for the tips!

:) hope you guys do good in obedience! theres lots of good advice here already, but Ill add in some more...

At our advanced obedience classes, we pratice recalls right when we get there. Have your boy on a 6-ft leash (or a longline if ya want), throw a good-smelling treat, like liver treats or cheese, a few feet away and tell him "Find". Right when he picks up the treat, say in a happy voice "COME!" gently pull on the leash and walk quickly backwards, while facing him and holding another treat low enough so that its at nose-level to him. When he comes to you and takes the treat, praise him and tell him he did a good come. Increase distance and speed up the process as he gets better. I suck at explaining this, but hopefully you can figure it out... these exercises have worked really, really well for Gonzo! At the beginning of class we usually do about 10-15 repititions and sometimes they have a contest to see who can do the most solid recalls in 1 minute (Gonzo won a cool ropey for doing it 17 times!). Also, when he is off leash I call my dog in a happy voice and run the other way... he always comes to that. If you think about it, when your dog is running away and trying to play with you, he will just keep running if you chase him. By running the other way, you encourage your dog to follow you. good luck with everything! :) I bet Kodie will do awesum in his classes

Yup its true though, if you have control over him than he can't get away.

Grab the other end of a leash, tell him come if he does not listen reel him in. If you tell him to come multiple times he will wait until you say it multiple times before he listens.
Praise when he comes.

Its good to always have treats in your pocket when you are training, you can practice this anytime, if you call him in the house you have a reward for him.
Oh and NEVER EVER punish a dog when you call him to come otherwise he associaated the come word with scolding. He has to want to come to you, there fore you have to be better, funner than what ever it is he is doing, he has to love you lots.
