I'm sure this has been asked about a billion times before but I'm curious so I have to ask. How did your kitty get his or her name?

With Remus, it was wierd. I had a dream about going to the shelter and picking up a cat named Remus *the cat in the dream was black though* When I went to the shelter and found my kitty, the name really seemed to fit him!

For some reason, my BIL calls him Kibby *he has since he met Remus * and the name got extended into Kibbyashi Maru *Star trek fans will get this joke :)*

So "Officially" he is Remus Kibbyashi Maru...but we only call him that when he is being Naw-Tee!

Oooo! Fun topic! Zelda is actually the name my sweet Zelly-girl had when I adopted her. Since I'm a sucker for old-school NES and happened to love the name, that's the name she kept. And so she is my Princess Zelda!

As for Mowgli, when I first caught him, he was such a wild child that naming him after the main character from The Jungle Book just seemed unbelievably fitting. Though he was almost named Crowley after one of the demon characters from Good Omens. :D

My RB Lola was a stray kitten at the vet clinic I was working for in college. They named her "Maple" because the lady who found her and dropped her off ( ) was named Ruth Maple. I thought she deserved a name all her own...and Lola seemed to fit for some reason.

Vegas and Reno, my two shelter kitties were just called lucky #1 and lucky #2 for the first couple of weeks I had them. I thought their names were original and fit the lucky theme.:D

Fun thread...I can't wait to hear everyone elses!!

I like threads like this...

When I first got married I asked my husband if we could adopt 2 kittens...a boy and a girl. Since I love Winnie the Pooh and the female was a tiger stripe she was named Tigger....her brother, who was almost her twin in the stripe department....was named Tony for Tony the Tiger of Kellog's.

Next came Smokey and because he is completely grey he was named Smokey Joe.

Next was Tucker and because she was a stray and I could not get close to her for quite some time I wanted a name that I felt could apply to either a boy or a girl.

Mystic was supposed to be Merlin....but Merlin turned out to be a girl  and therefore no longer applied. Seeing that she is almost entirely black (except for a big white spot on her tummy) I wanted something "witchy"...so Mystic (as in Mystical). Her other name is Flubby Ann....because her tummy is so, shall we say, plush.

Last but certainly NOT least is Abner.......well what can I say about Abner....the name just came to me when I first say him and the name stuck. His full name is Abner James but I also call him Abbey which confuses my mom because Abbey is for a girl.

So that's how my crew got their names.

Well, the story behind my girls' names is't very exciting... I guess I just loved the names! :)

When Jez was a kitten she walk with her butt wiggling back and forth. She looked like a little Jezabelle walking with her tail held high. Her sister Weezie. We named Geez Louise. Because BF walks around the house saying "Gees Louise where is -----?" or something to that effect. Also she was suppose to be a sickly kitten with lung problems and weezed alot. So called her Weezie after a couple of days she stopped weezing. But still call her Weezie. Then Dixie who came from the north of the Mason-Dixon line. I had a name pick out for her but all the way up there I kept seeing Dixie this and Dixie that. So when we arrived she looked like a Dixie. Her full name is Dixie Blaze because she has a blaze.

I will do a few more later.

DUFFY - we wanted a name beginning with D, and by process of elimination came up with Duffy - as in my daffy, Duffy darling.

REESE - I opened the box and saw this pathetic creature and immediately thought Rhesus Monkey. In actuality, I should have thought Capuchin - due to the *cap* of gray on her white head. But it was Rhesus, and REESE she became - instantly. Also known as Miss Priss.

ABBY - Abigail means source of delight. I had her picture on the web before I had her, and she looked like an Abigail. Now she is Abby, or Abby-dabby- doodlebug. And a source of constant delight to us.

GRADY - this is one of those *POOF* cats. He started life up the street, but ended up in our yard last September. They have never missed him; far as I know they have never even looked for him. Anyway, we started out calling him Little Gray - he's charcoal colored. But he grew, and grew, and grew some more. He was used to the sound of *gray* - so became Grady.

RED - a one-eyed stray who wandered into our life last winter. I called him Red because I needed to call him something. Now he's ours, all ours. I tried to change Red to Rudy - he got depressed. I'm working on Ben, as in Big Ben, right now; until then he is Red.

From right here on Pet Talk! :D

After I got her from the shelter I asked Pet Talkers for suggestions, and from a looooong list I got down to a choice of two, Ebeth, from sasvermont, and Ebby, from Cataholic.

And thats how Ebony became Ebby! :)

DUDLEY- Used to be my grandma's kittie, she named him Sir Dudley.
SAMMY- my mom's co-worker has an orange male named Sammy, so we thought we would name ours Sammy, we liked the sound of the name, and felt that it fit his looks and personality.

Our Rainbow Bridge kitty (Kuhio) was named for a Hawaiian Prince. Kuhio turned out to be a very prissy girl, but she always acted like royalty.

While we were trying to think of a name of Halo, we would answer "hello" everytime she meowed. That morphed into Halo after a while. If we had thought about it more, we might have called her Hilo to keep our Hawaiian theme going.

Cammie was called Roberta at the shelter. After a few days home, it was obvious that "Roberta" meant nothing to her. We started calling her Cammie (short for camoflage).

We named Pepper after her "peppery" personality. She is full of pep even though she has a profound heart murmur. The vet said she won't have a long life, but evidently no one told her she's supposed to be delicate. She is a non-stop action cat. She only weighs 6 pounds (almost) but she rules the roost. Halo and Cammie give into her because she is so strong willed and persistent.

Ok, time for next 3 cats.
The next boy we went to look at was a brown and white Maine Coon Male he was a cute as could be. And we name him Chino. like a cappuccino with whip cream on top. Well, while we were there we saw his brother a brown tabby. What a cutie he was. So on the way home we tried to talk oursevles out taking 2 kittens. It DIDN'T WORK. So we had to come up with a name. Alfredo, Angelo, Vinnie, you would not what BF was tossing out for suggestions he was suggesting Mutt, Jeff, Aft, Moe Larry or Curly, laural or hardy. He was relentless. But then we remembered Dixie. These kittens will come from Pa. and when we crossed the Mason-Dixon line, into Maryland, we both knew.
His name was Mason. So we had Chino and Mason Brothers
Next came Tyler. The Ocicat. While watching a friends cats while she was on vacation Momma Ocicat had her kittens. (Thought they were not due for another week or so. WRONG! I went to feed and check on all of them went into the bathroom to get water and found a kitten born on the bathroom floor. Well gathered up mom looked for other kittens found none and took them to the vet to make sure they were all right. Told the vet if a girl kitten Tilly if boy Tyler. Well it was Tyler. Mom did have other kittens found them as soon as I bought the mom and Tyler home. They were in a closet with a very tiny opening. A total of 6 healthy kittens. When they were old enough my friend gave me Tyler.

I love fancy cars, and in my younger days I always dreamed that I'd have a black Bentley by the time I was 30. After graduating from college, becoming a teacher, and supporting myself for awhile, I realized that wasn't going to happen for me! So, when I adopted my tiny black kitty, I named him Bentley- therefore fulfilling my dream of having a black Bentley (at only 25!) Then a few years later when I decided to add to my family, I needed an equally regal sounding name, so my precious grey girl was named Alexis. So, at the young age of 27 (and living on a teacher's salary) I had a Bentley and Alexis. (ba dum bum!)

Corny, but what can I say.

The last batch of RB kitties were raised with my Sesame Street generation children and were Oskar, Ernie and Bert:rolleyes:
My current kitties - I got to name. Since I am a lit major - I thought they should have "poetic" names and so each is named for a poet - TS Eliot, Emily Dickinson, and Dylan Thomas. Dylan Thomas was suggested my CatsinDenver since he came from the shelter as "Dyllan".

Allen was named after the Philadelphia 76ers Alan Iverson. I hate sports, so changing ALAN to ALLEN was my little devilish way of making it not a direct link to Iverson! :D PS: Could you ever guess that at the time we were deciding names for our little orangie boy that the 76ers were going all the way?

Pouncer was named after catmadu's RB Pouncer. Jenluckenbach was his foster mom and named him. WhenI met him, the name seemed so purrfect that we kept it. There was never a moment's hesisation that we were gong to change the name. I swear that his gaurdian angel Pouncer is looking after him... she must be because that boy gets into some crazy things!

RB Butterscotch (because of his color)

Skinny (for his size, not now LOL )

Thumper (because of her tail. She hits it against your body when she is happy)

Eleanor (came with that name from PetSmart Adaption area and that was her name from previous owner, so we kept it since she knows it so well )

ok next 3. LOL.
One day the breeder of Mason and Chino. (by the way my daughter has their sister Little. Called and said she has a female kitten who she would love to have as a breeder but she has enough at the moment. Ask if I was interested in co-owning her. Of course I said yes. After owning and reading and asking alot of question. This is something I wanted to do. Well she told me what the kitten looked like big red spots silver and white. Yuck did not sound very pretty to me. I was thinking she would be a beauty. The more I thought about it on the way up to Pa. again I just thought yuck ugly cat ugly kittens. When I got there and saw her OMG she was as beautiful as I thought she was going to be ugly. She was one of 2 kittens and her brother was a very high white cameo. So I told her yes I would co-own her and would come and get her when she was old enough. All of Terri's cats are named after songs so I was trying to come up with a good name. Then the Beatles came on with Penny Lane. So that was her name. But one thing kept bothering me her brother, the way he looked at me. And the first time I saw him I told her she should name him Moses. Well, when I got home I called her and ask if Moses could come with Penny. So home came Moses and Penny Lane. What a wonderful Mom Penny has been. Producing well behave and cuddle bugs (kittens) and Moses is my soul mate. He knew he would be coming home with me. A very wise and gentle cat he is.

These are fun threads.:)

Well, Bob got his name because my girlfriend thought he looked a little like a Bobcat, his name Bob Cat. Also, I like the name of Bob for a kitty, not sure why. It didn't enter my mind that my boss at the time was also named Bob. It made for some interesting conversations at work.:D

Joey came with her name. We wanted to change as little as possible to help her get used to the new place. Not a very interesting story there.;)

Also since Stella posted pictures, I thought that I would too.

There was a woman at the swimming pool of my old apartment with a newborn named Raven. That is where I got Raven.

When I got Ron, I knew I wanted an "R" name. And I knew he needed a manly man name. So, I wound up naming him after my biological father, Ron. (Which my family thinks is really wierd.) :p

Great names... My friend has 2 pigeons named Vegas and Reno.:)

Oliver He has green eyes and the name just fit. A friend also had made the comment that he was an orphan (well a stray) and so was Oliver twist.

Raisin It was just the first thing that popped out of my mouth.

Sundae We found her on our porch as we were leaving to go to Dairy Queen one night.

Jimmy He was found in a swamp behind a restaurant called "Jungle Jim's".

Rav (aka Kitten) He was found at a Toyota dealership. Kitten because he is the youngest.

Scampers I have no idea how she got her name, she was Justins when we got married.

Roxy She had her name when we got her. She is a calico and her name fits her very well.

Well this could take a minute!

Sammy-I'm no good at sexing cats! Never seem to get it right so I named our cute tiny new kitten Sally and then over time the "bits" began to show! I had to come up with something close since HE knew his name. Sammy was the only thing we could come up with.

Leroy-He got his name by conning his way into the house. He would come and sit on a table we have on the porch and look in the window. All you could see were his eyes and ears and hubby would refer to him as Kilroy from the comic strip. Kilroy turned into Leroy and stuck.

Peanut Butter-Hubby named him and I'm not sure where it came from other than he said he was the color of Peanut Butter.

Stubby-Well that is obvious I guess. We would laugh at her when she was wild because you could see these tiny, short legs going as fast as could be but she would hardly move. Hubby said it looked like she had little stubs and so she became Stubby.

Lucky-Well, not very original but he was darn lucky to live through his traumatic kittenhood.

Maggie Sue-I named her and I don't know where it came from. She looked very girlie and I started calling her Maggie and Sue just seemed to flow along with it.

Pervy-Poor little adorable girl deserves a much better name but it all started when she was a little wild feral kitten. She was the most skittish of any of them. She would hide until you went back in the house so we could only see her through the window. We referred to her as Nervous Pervis and it soon shortened to Pervy and just stuck.

Pete-Pete does this wierd thing with his feet. He doesn't make normal biscuits! He does one leg for a few minutes and then he does the other leg for a few minutes. I jokingly said he had crazy feet and his full name turned into Crazy Feet Pete.

Pepper Jack-Pepper Jack was the third kitten and since we had Pervy and Pete we wanted another P name. I came up with Pepper and shortly after they moved in Hubby soon added Jack because he is full of spunk like Pepper Jack cheese!

Scrappy Magoo-Scrappy came from catmandu's RB kitty Scrappy and PT folk came up with Magoo. http://petoftheday.com/talk/images/our_smilies/smile.gif

Shew!! I think that's all of them!http://petoftheday.com/talk/images/our_smilies/biggrin.gif

Ripley - when we got him as a kitten my husband wanted to name him Sam but I wanted something more original. I thought and thought until Ripley from the Alien movies came to mind and I thought that fit a cat well because he can really rip you one with his claws. My mom always called him Ripsnorter which cracks me up.

Jazz - I found the name on an internet list of cat names. It made our top five list and then we finally narrowed it down to that because we both really love jazz music. I really wanted to call her Boo but my husband hated it so now that is her nickname from me, Boo Kitty.
Her name at the shelter was Chrissy.

Scout - it was on that internet list too and I narrowed it down to either Scout, Rio or Pico. I really wanted an O ending name but when hubby heard Scout he really liked it so there ya go. I also wanted to call her Roo from Winnie the Pooh but hubby hated that too so her nickname is ScoutyRoo.
Her name at the shelter was Goldie.

FLUFFY - My husband named him after he found us. Although he was much thinner then he still had lots of fur.

LUCKY - We adopted him from the AZ Humane Society on Friday the 13th of June at 13 hundred hours. Black cat/friday the 13th - Luck?!

YOSHI - For the longest time I wanted a pure white kitten with big blue eyes.....I think they are beautiful. I had once heard that "yoshi" meant "beautiful" in Japanese. Come to find out that although it is a slang term, "yoshi" also means "adpoted one", so either way it fits. Besides, Yoshi has fooled us, he now has a lot of orange in him.

Oh what a fun thread!

Patches- We picked him up at a shelter. I loved the unusual placings of white and black on him. He has half a mustach, a little streak of white splotches down his back, a perfect black circle on his belly and a few other strategically placed markings not fit to be shared in polite company ;) . The names just seemed to fit him.

Ezzie- We also got her from a shelter but she was full grown. They had named her Ezmeralda- she knew her name so we shortened it down to Ezzie.

Oreo- We had rescued a tub of kittens and Oreo was in the litter. We named all the kittens and he was the last one so we kept him. He has a black head, a white band and then a black band like an Oreo cookie!

Saphirah - She belonged to my husband before we got married. She is named after Sapphira in the Bible. Sapphira and her husband were struck down by God for their selfish behavior. Since cats are notoriously selfish, the name fit.

Chloe - Since we already had a biblical theme going, I took out a Bible with a list of names in the back and started looking for a fitting name for our newest kitty. Chloe seemed to be the name that fit her the best. (Chloe is actually a rather obscure name in the Bible. She was mentioned in one of the epistles, just in case anyone was wondering.)

Samson - Again, we stuck with our Biblical name theme. Samson is a male cat, and he has long hair, thus the name Samson.

This is a fun thread. Its great to read where all the kitty names come from.

Jack O'Lantern--He's all black and guessing his age put his birthday around the end of October. He was a neighborhood stray for quite awhile before we adopted him. We found out later that several other neighbors called him versions of Jack. One gal called him Jack and another Panama Jack and yet another Black Jack.

Jari Kurri and Uwe Krupp--After Denise (a cat who never shut up named after a friend of mine who never shut up either) passed on, DH frequently mentioned that I just might have to have another cat (this from the man who says he hates cats so this was a big deal). One day we went to the vet's and he had a couple of tabby kittens. DH said I could have them both. We brought them home, he took them into his room and came out later to declare their names. They were named after NHL hockey players. Once Uwe was very happy because the guy on TV knew his name. Now we call him Pooey so much I don't think he'd recognize Uwe.

Fido--Oh poor Fido, what a terrible name. I often rescued dumped cats, checked them out at the vet, took them home and then worked on finding them homes. My DH gave them all temporary names like Fred, Bob, Cat, Spot, Dash, and finally Fido. Well, Fido turned out to not be adoptable because he would growl and bite when people came to look at him. Once we decided to keep him, Fido quit doing that. Apparently he decided he had found his home and would do what it took to stay. By then we'd called him Fido for so long it just sort of stuck. We call him Mister Doh more often than Fido. Early on I thought maybe we could change Fido to Floyd.

Smudge--I had the name before I had the cat. I always thought Smudge would be a good name for a multi-colored hodge podge cat. Smudge is a tortie manx, and the name totally fits.
