Notice that all of Gilbert's sleepy places are soft and warm. A winter in Nova Scotia with no humans to love him would have been tough for the poor guy, so he's very lucky. Also lucky to find humans that don't go crazy over a little naughtiness. He makes up for it, doesn't he?
