View Full Version : My theory why Luna is pooping on the floor

As you may know, Luna poops on the floor almost every day. It's never far away from her box, but offering another box (one for poo, and one for pee) didn't help.

Now I had an idea why she might do that: From the day I got her, she has never covered her poo with litter, and you know, we've discussed before that this is sometimes a domincance thing. Now since Lily moved in, she used to do that for Luna - went to her box and covered her poo as soon as Luna has finished her business. Maybe this is bothering Luna - she wants her poo to remain uncovered because she's the boss - and that's why she's doing her business on the laminate now.

What do you think about that? I know it's impossible to be 100% sure about what's going on in her head, but this would be kind of logical, wouldn't it?

I don't have a clue but want to wish you luck on figuring it out and resolving the problem..

and resolving the problem..

I've given up on that, to be honest... I've tried so many things: additional litter box, moving the box to another place, using pheromones... it's not working.

It's not so bad, easy to clean, only one time it was embarassing and that was when she did that in the hall while my landlord was sitting in the kitchen. Did my best to remove the mess in secret because I didn't want him to see that - he hasn't noticed. :o

Kirsten - the theory DOES sound reasonable. If this is a the case - how about providing a small litter box without litter? (or a very tiny bit of odor controlled) It would still require picking up every time but at least it would be contained and not on the floor? Just a thought...

Sounds like you are on to something. This may be Luna's way to keep her dominance established since Lily is the cover up girl.

I've noticed something similar going on between Jazz and Scout. Jazz is the cover up and clean up after everyone cat and Scout has been apparently not covering hers up so everytime Scout finishes Jazz will run in and take care of business. I've been lucky that it doesn't bother Scout to haves hers covered.

It is a good theory and makes a lot of sense. Of course, I am no expert.

I really like Debbie's idea and it may do the trick if that is the issue.

Debbie, that's a good idea, it's worth a try! :)

That make sense,although I always thought,that that was more,of a Tom Cat Thing,than a Lady Cats,but I guess that extreme jealousy,can make Cats,do strange things!

Just a couple of thoughts...did you try a different type of litter? Cats can be SO FUSSY about the litter.

And, and I know this is weird, but try putting an old rug or piece of carpet in a separate cat litter box and seeing if Luna starts using it without the litter. This worked for my little RB girl who would poop in the litter but pee only on carpeting. Later, the vet said that some cats just simply prefer a different texture for peeing or pooping. Although this was not an optimal solution, it did save my carpeting.

Good luck!

Hmm, I'm not sure why Luna does that, but your theory sounds good.

Cats have so many different reasons for what they do, they are as complicated as humans, except they are nicer than most.

The theory sounds plausible. It sounds so logical! Poor Luna didn't like the baby covering up he strong dominatnt smell.

I like the idea of the separate box as Debbie suggested.

You might be on to something there.....

Personally, I think it's kinda cute how the baby goes around "Oops! She forgot to cover it up again... I'll get it... Maybe if I clean it up for her she'll like me better." hehehe

I also like Deb's idea ... it's kind of along the lines of what I was thinking. I was just thinking about picking the poop up (with tissue of course) and placing it in the litter pan ... right fresh on top! ;) Good luck!!!

Well, I tried what Debbie has suggested and set up an empty box in the hall tonight. But she pooped on the floor again this morning, looks like this is the way she wants it!

Okay, so be it, *sigh* Luna has always been a girl with a very funny litter box behavior!
