View Full Version : Fister has blood in his stool

We've noticed the last few days that Fister has blood in his stool. :( He doesn't really seem bothered, he eats and drinks like normal, but he does call for us a little more - I think. I'm not sure whether it's because he wants me to come and brush him, or if he's trying to tell us something. It seems that he just wants me to sit there on the floor with him and keep him company.
I searched on the web and found this: http://www.vetinfo.com/cbloodystools.html
I've been to visit the vet today, he had a dog on the table, so I talked to his assistant who has been there quite a long time, and also knows Fister. She suggested I should try Royal Canin's Intestinal for a while, and also gave me two Drontal pills for him - about $10 each! It will be interesting to see how I get those two down his throat! They're for worms. I realize he haesn't had a worm treatment for over a year - possibly two. :o
Fister has been down in the yard 2-3 times in the last month, from 5 min. to half an hour - chewing a bit of grass and sitting in the flower beds. I have occasionally given him a few bits of raw meat while cooking, but not much.
Please keep your fingers and everything crossed that the new diet and the pills will help. :)

Aww, poor Fister. I hope he's OK. Those Drontal tablets are big aren't they? The best of luck with them!

Filou had that one time and it was coccidia, not worms. Coccidia can be killed by some meds and you can get them outside and from raw meat- but you have to check it first at the vet's.
I know that it is not a small thing to get Fister to the vet but I think it may be useful.
Scritchies for him:)

Everything we can *cross* is *crossed*, Fister!

Did you take a stool SAMPLE in for them to examine?
And if you (or the White Coat) can *do* it -
you might keep a close eye on his *Weight* with a scale -
to monitor if he gains or looses any weight.
We'll keep the Prayer Candle on for Fister

Oh yes, they are! I'm still waiting for him to go and lay in the window sill, that's the perfect place for me to give them to him. - Patience!!
Barbara! Yes, it could be coccidia, but as the vet was too busy, I took the pills and the diet food. If it doesn't help, I'll certainly take a sample to him to be investigated further. ;)
Phred, weighing Fister can be quite a task! The scale has to stand in the living room next to the window. Then, I must wait until he sits in the window, which is the easiest place to lift him from - get on the scale and HOLD him until the pointer stops. John has to be next to us, to see the number, as I don't have a chance to look. :D
But so far, I don't think Fister has lost any weight.
Thanks so much for your prayers and crossed fingers - I'm sure it will help! :)

I've done it!! :D At last he sat in the windowsill - but he had to try out ALL the other places first!
The first one went down like a piece of cake. :) It took a bit longer with the second one - it went round and round in his mouth, until I finally got it pushed to the right place and he swallowed it. Amazing he didn't try to escape - I suppose he knew I was in charge. ;)
He got a shrimp and some shrimp juice after to help get the bad taste out. :)

Pichu had blood in his stool a while ago. I was ready to take a sample to the vet, but I gave him some pills first (if I only remembered what exactly), at the vet's suggestion. In some days, when I was ready to take the sample, he was ok. So, the vet suggested if I notice again, to call him. But dear kat is well since then :) I sure hope Fister is going to be ok in no time.

Oh well done on managing to give Fister two tablets!! That's never easy in my experience. The first one can be OK (if you show them who's boss!), but the second one is something else altogether. I'm most impressed. :D

Oh no! Poor Fister! At least you got the pills in ok. Hopefully that and the new food will do it's trick and he'll be back to normal in no time.
Skritchies to our big boy. :)

I'm so sorry to hear of Fister's tummy troubles. Sending get well wishes that his medicine and new food will take care of it!;)
Oh no not Fister! Trevor is wringing his paws waiting to hear if his good buddy is going to respond quickly to the medicine. We will anxiously await news! I had to pill Trevor once and it wasn't too hard once I got him "in position." HA! The problem was when he'd see me approaching with the pills he'd take off! LOL! Be a good boy Fister and hurry and get well!

LOL! Pam, I've got it down to perfection; approaching him with a pill. He doesn't suspect a thing! :D I'm glad there's no side effects - so they say!
He's now settled down on top of John in bed, they're watching TV.
Thanks everyone for the well wishes, he appreciates it! :)

I made the mistake of coating Eddie's worm pills with vitamin paste. He LOVED vitamin paste. Now he sees me with the tube and runs! :(

I'm so sorry to hear that Fister's not well.:( I'm glad to hear that you're able to pill him. I sure hope that the pills do the trick. Get well soon Fister.:)
When I adopted Storm he also had blood in his stool and it turned out to be coccidia. I think he had to take a medicine called Albon Suspension. It was in liquid form and smelled good but he hated it. Luckliy it did the trick.

Oh, sorry to hear you ruined the Vitamin paste treat, Sara. ;) Do you think he'll ever forget? I used to do the same to get the pill down!
Fister here! Eddie, my mom used to do those tricks on me - now, she doesn't stand a chance - I know exactly what's going on, and I'm licking all the goodies off and just leave the pills! I can hear you have figured it out also. :D
Pam, Fister regards Trevor a very good pal, he sends lots of headbumpies and purrs. :) You know, he's also one of my favourites.
Yes, it's all a matter of getting them in the right position, isn't it! And the more relaxed they are, the better!
Fister had his two pills - eventually. This is his reaction to them.

I checked his stool this morning and could not see any blood. :) He puked once around midday, but he seems to be OK.
Thanks for all your well wishes, I'm sure they helped. :)

Oh Fister, I know those pills are nasty, but you have to take them to stay healthy.
I'm so glad to hear there's no more blood. Hopefully that's it then and you're done with all your medicines. By the look on your face, I can tell that you hope so too. ;) :D

Well ..... yes, the pills seemed to work, but still, I'd like to know what the problem was.
He puked again today, not much and only liquid. He's still getting his "sensitive tummy" diet food + a little of his normal Hills C/D mixed in sometimes.
He let me clip 3 of his nails today. :D

Eddie seems to finally have forgotten and is enjoying his vitamin paste again.
Edwina puked her worm pill and I was so worried she would still have the worms but both recieved a clean bill of health or at least worm-free bill of health!

How true the saying is that "a picture is worth 1,000 words!" Fister you have me laughing out loud you silly boy you!! :D What a face!
Randi, a few years ago Andy had a scratch on his cornea (probably from playing a little too intensely with Trevor). He wouldn't open his eye all the way so off to the vet's we went. He was prescribed eye drops. The vet said the drops will eventually make it to his throat and he definitely will not like the taste. Oh my what an experience! When I tell you that Andy avoided me like a leper I am not exaggerating. The first installment of the drops even caused him to foam at the mouth, trying to rid himself of the awful taste. Fister you took me down Memory Lane with that picture! You look almost as miserable as Andy did! :p The important thing is that you keep getting better!

Randi, I'm sorry to hear Fister is having these problems! I hope he'll be okay and that it's only been worms that have caused his problem!!!
