I think male dogs are generally more aggressive and this is their way of saying, "This is mine, and this, and this..." I'm no expert, though. My Lefty uses his precious "reserve" of urine very carefully on walks--if he can smell that another dog has urinated on a particular patch of grass, that patch gets a steady stream from him as well. Other times he barely lifts his leg and just lets a few drops go--we call those "drive-bys."

hahaha I too call them drive by's that is just too funny!

Yes, male dogs like to mark their territory, in the wild in packs it was the males job to keep the pack together & to mark the territory, guess you can never breed that out of a dog.

Rex likes to mark everything, everywhere, even when his bladder is empty, he lifts his leg, and leaves a "half drop".

Lefty does that too! Sometimes I suspect him of just going through the motions... :)

My very first dog, Sheba, a.k.a the best, smartest dog in the whole wide world, was a female Shepherd mix who lifted her leg just like the boys - in fact she was literally the leader of the pack on their morning route through the nieghborhood. It IS a marking of territory, a sort of "signing the guest book" at all such spots!

Male dogs do that to show dominence, as well as showing that they've "been here." We call it "marking their territory." After all, the "more land" you have/own, the better a dog you are to the canine world! My dog, Blaze does it constantly too, and there's nothing you can do about it. It is true that dogs that aren't fixed do it moreso, but even then, Blaze who was fixed when he was 5 months old, does it often. Our deceased dog, Bandit though, was not neutered however, and marked everything in sight. It's a DOMINENCE thing!! ;)

I have also read and seen proof that if you get them neutered before they start lifting their leg to pee, that they won't ever do that... they will just continue to squat when they do it....

That's why I'm getting Felony in to be neutered as soon as possible... I don't want him to start lifting his leg!
