I received this email about an event going on here in State College the weekend of the 4th of July. It centers around a dog I had told you all about before. Snowball. It is under a thread entitled "A Sad and Frustrating Situation". I have no idea how you post a link to the thread here or I would. But anyway. Here is the information on the Chain Off event in PA.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TO THE PRESS
DOGS DESERVE BETTER FOUNDER TO CHAIN HERSELF TO DOGHOUSE FOR 33 HRS
July 3-4, During Chain Off 2004
State College, PA
DDB to Award $250.00 Prize for Best Doggie 'Makeover' Photos!
Tammy Sneath Grimes, founder of Dogs Deserve Better, will chain herself to a doghouse in State College, PA for 33 hours to raise awareness for the plight of chained and penned dogs, from 8:00 a.m. July 3rd through 5:00 p.m. July 4th.
Grimes says, "There are many people in America who don't even know this goes on, or don't believe these dogs live chained outside for their entire lives. My hope is to bring this national problem to their attention. Everyone needs to know how chained and penned dogs live, and everyone who knows the loving
nature of a dog needs to take a stand against it."
Dogs Deserve Better, an award-winning national nonprofit working to get dogs into the home and family, announces its second annual Chain Off event. This event will take place July 3-4, 2004, while the country celebrates the Freedom of America. During this time Dogs Deserve Better calls attention to those who are still not free--dogs who live their entire lives on the end of
a chain or enclosed in a pen.
The first eight hours of Grimes chaining will take place in a parking lot next to Snowball, a white dog in State College who has lived chained for 15 years. Many people have tried to get him a better life, but without laws to protect him, his caretakers continue to chain him to this day. "We hope to highlight the plight of Snowball and others like him. No one should be allowed to force a dog to live as Snowball has. America is the land of the
free, and yet we continue to imprison man's best friend."
During Chain Off 2004, Dogs Deserve Better asks all dog caretakers with dogs living chained or penned outside to take Fido out of the backyard for JUST THIS ONE DAY! To give him one day of freedom, one day to be man's best friend.
Dogs Deserve Better will award $250.00!* for the best 'makeover' photos of a dog off chains/out of the pen and having fun for the day.* (Caregiver must provide before photos of chained or penned as well as after photos. See website for contest rules.)
Grimes states, "Our sincere wish is that after seeing Fido with their heart as well as their eyes, they will know he belongs with the family, his pack, and not left alone in the backyard for life."
Why? Dogs are pack animals. In the absence of the pack of long ago, humans have become their pack. When they are isolated from the pack, they suffer both mentally and physically. Many dogs have even been found with collars embedded in their necks, the result of years of neglect at the end of a chain. And many dogs have starved or frozen to death left and forgotten in
the backyard.
Dogs Deserve Better seeks to raise awareness and put an end to this inhumane treatment for dogs. For more info, visit http://www.dogsdeservebetter.com.
