View Full Version : Welcome to the world, baby bird!

Well, this time, it has happened. About 3 weeks ago, Milly Cockatiel started laying eggs again, and I just assumed, like the 16 eggs that came earlier this year, that she would abandon them. I never even put the nest back in the cage, instead put a rubbermaid container filled with nesting material and the first two eggs, figuring she would walk away eventually. She didn't. In fact, she laid two more eggs, for a total of four. She's been sitting and sitting, and I couldn't even get close enough to candle the eggs to find out whether they were fertile or not.

Well, at least one was fertile! Late yesterday afternoon, Helen and I put our ears up near the cage, after Popcornbird asked me if I could hear any chirping, and we could hear one of the eggs chirping! OMG!!!! This morning, there is a precious little baby that Milly is feeding and caring for. It is very tiny, in fact, quite ugly, but has soft yellow feathers (thank you, Roger) on the lower part of it's body and a sweet pink head. I can't get a picture at this point, but I will. She just got out of the nest to eat and I got a good view of the tiny thing. It's probably about two inches long at the most, so tiny.

Oh, can you imagine the chorus of "Zippity Do Da" that's going to be coming out of this house? Hehehe!!! If the others are going to hatch, they will hatch over the next 3-5 days, I imagine. I am hardly believing this, never intended for it to happen, but now that it has, I'm so excited!!

Anyone dying to have a baby Cockatiel??

Kay, we have a home for one. If the others hatch, I will definitely try to find good homes for them, as well, but I refuse to sell them at the pet store, so if they have to stay with us, and Aly can't make a quick trip to SC in a few months ;), I think we will keep them. Unfortunately, if that happens, it will mean that Roger and Milly will no longer be allowed together at all because we are not wanting to be breeders.

I'm having a hard time working today, waiting and watching to see if we get anymore babies!!!! :)

Logan, that just has to be one of the dearest pictures I have seen. A brand new life, chirping away in your home - with more on the way.

How can you not just stay by the cage all day?

Congratulations all around - to the proud Momma and Poppa!

Pretty soon you can take the chorus "on the road" while they all sing Zippety Do Dah that Poppa will surely teach them immediately.

It doesn't get any more precious than this! Somehow I was not expecting the eggs and baby to be so big! I know, I know, they are small, but I guess I was expecting the little cutie to be the size of a large insect! LOL! As you can see, I know NOTHING about birds! Better you than me Logan! I would be beside myself! How absolutely darling! :)

Oh my GOSH!!!! So you DID hear chirping when I asked you yesterday afternoon!!! I cannot BELIEVE it!!! Logan's a Granny!!! He he he! The baby is SO precious!!! I think they get even uglier once their baby down falls off :p, but once they get their feathers, they're the cutest things on the planet! Congratulation Mama Milly, Daddy Roger, Logan, and your whole family!! Did you think of a name for the little guy? :p It will be exciting to see what colors they all turn out to be!

Oh Logan, I'm SO excited for you!!! If you keep them, be sure to keep all males seperate from all females, or you'll be going through this all the time. :p How exciting!!! Keep us updated, and keep posting pics as the baby grows! I want to watch them grow from the day they hatch, till the day they get all their feathers! :D

Awww!!! I can see his closed eyes, and his itty bitty little wings now! Do you have any idea when their eyes open? Is Milly still *sitting* on him along with the other eggs? He seems to be in the way if she needs to sit on the other eggs, but I think she needs to keep him/her warm too. What does daddy Roger think? Is he helping at all?

What a darling little butter yellow baby! How do you tell sexes in cockatiels? I know with budgies it's determined by the nose covering. Baby birds grow so incredibly fast so you MUST take daily pictures, so we all get to watch baby progress! :D Congrats all around! :)

That is so so adorable Logan. Dawn lays eggs off and on but there is no Mr. Dawn so I just wait till she gets bored with them and take them out then. :)

When my mom bred parakeets for awhile, I remember the babies hatching 2-3 days apart. I bet the other eggs will hatch too. You'll have to take more pictures as they grow!

Just thought I'd try to answer this :). Tiels you really can't definitely tell until they are adults unless DNA testing is done. The differences in adult hens and males is sort of dependent on their coloring. Regular grey females are usually not quite as bright as the males. Non-lutinos tend to have little bars under their tales that fade on the males but stay on the females. On pearled tiels, females keep the pearl look while the males tend to lose the pearling on their backs, it just turning into more large blotchy patches than the "pearls."

That is a great explanation, Jessica. Being new to Cockatiel ownership, I had to read a lot when we got Roger. When Milly came along, her name was Willy. I'll bet if I did a search back I could find posts here on Pet Talk where I told her (his) story. The more I read, the more I realized that the people who told me it was a boy were wrong. Now I can prove that for sure! ;) But she has the bars on the underside of her tail, and it is also obvious because her orange cheeks are very muted in comparison to Roger's.

I know there are some more questions people asked, but the only other one I remember is that Popcornbird asked if Milly continues to sit on the baby and the eggs and yes, she does. It is interesting to look at her because she is holding herself differently, much more puffed up and spread out. I'm sure that is to help shift her weight to not hurt the baby. Their instincts are remarkable!! :)

So far, only the one baby, but as Jessica mentioned, there could be several days between hatchings because she laid the eggs over a week long period. :)

Oh, I am so glad I did not miss this thread and got to see the picture of the latest member of the family. Pam is right about the size of the eggs. Wow, how did Milly ever push those things out?
Does Baby Bird have a name yet? I'll have to forgo the *cute* adjective for the time being, from my experience the little ones who start out challenged on the cuteness scale are often the most beautiful as they start to grow.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to share these pictures, but now that you've started, we'll all be clamouring for more. :)

I can't wait till their feathers start coming out. Then we can see what colors they're going to be! How exciting! Have you named them, or not yet?

Logan
06-06-2004, 09:44 PM
No names, yet. Scott is so afraid that I'm going to get too attached, then something might happen to them. He wants me to wait a while. I think once they get stronger and can lift their little heads up and their eyes will open, then I might have to start naming them!!!

Popcornbird, you can imagine that all I want to do is sit here and watch every move they make! :) They are so very sweet. I just wish you guys could hear them. They make noises when they eat, but very little, otherwise. They are soft, chirping noises.........so sweet. :)

Logan, I just came home from a wedding, but I just had to check out your thread before going to bed.

So tender, so sweet, so dear............aww, I could just go on and on.

Isn't Mother Nature just the best? Yes, prayers will be said for all - babies and Millie and Roger too.

I think Scott is on to something............he sees many cages in his future and he is trying to gently prepare you for separation at some point.

But, if you decide to keep them, don't forget that TODAY is the day that you set up their college fund.........it will take that long to save enough.:D :D

I'm still in awe of Milly and how she accomplished her goal. She is one very determined Mama, and just think of how elated she must be at the outcome. What is Roger's opinion of all that has occurred? As for me, this itty bitty stage is nerve wracking.

Congratulations, Logan, on the two new additions.
