I had not heard of these events until recently, have you ever
heard of this?

These are clearly against animal cruelty laws in these states,
but the events, billed as "family entertainment", still go on. Since
enforcement of anti cruelity laws are left up to local authorities
who go along with local sentiment on this cruel "sport". Some
locals quoted said it was a "tradition' in southern & western
states.

I wish the bright light of national publicity would expose this
barbaric "tradition" for what it is. Violent cruelty to animals.

Logan,

I'm positive that you would speak up if you had known of these
events. From the article,

" Hog-dog rodeos are common in parts of the South and Midwest, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas, despite the fact that they are, according to state laws, illegal-event organizers generally prohibit cameras for that very reason." These are some of the states where it is
being investigated.

I don't see how a person could witness such cruety & even
allow their children to take part in it.

Sick, cruel, horrible people...

Taking a kid to see that is borderline child abuse IMO

Read some encouraging news from my ASPCA newsletter
today.........but I can't believe a State Senator would actually
propose reducing penalities for cock fighting in Oklahoma. He
failed.

BLOODSPORTS BANNED IN LOUISIANA & OKLAHOMA
Great news for animals and their advocates:

*Thanks to the tireless efforts of Oklahoma humanitarians, Senator Frank Shurden’s attempt to drastically reduce penalties for cockfighters was defeated! The bill, which Shurden has tried to pass five times, would have allowed Oklahomans to maintain cockfighting facilities and possess birds for fighting, essentially legalizing cockfighting except in instances where birds had knives or gaffs strapped to their legs.

* In Louisiana, legislation to prohibit Hog Dog Rodeos--a barbaric “sport” in which trained dogs maul trapped pigs--has been signed into law by Governor Kathleen Blanco. Set to be enacted on August 15, HB 1244 prohibits any event in the state of Louisiana whose significant feature or main purpose is the use of a dog to fight, kill, maim or injure a hog.

Pelican State humanitarians, please visit the ASPCA online to send Governor Blanco a note of thanks. And if you don’t live in Louisiana, you can still get involved in passing animal-friendly laws in your state. Just visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center and select your state from the pull-down menu to find out what legislation is pending.

Hooray on both things!!!

Cockfighting should not be legal, in any way!

Im glad the hot dog rodeo thing was banned too!
