This is just one more example that further endorses my disdain for humanity on the whole. I'm sickened, but not in the least surprised. These kind of con artists are just par for the course in today's society, IMHO.

OMG! That is SICK and AWFUL!!!!! I want to shake that man and that woman and ask them "WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!?!?!?"

That is so so sad. I feel so sorry for the pet owners. Queen Scoop A Lot, are you from that area? Any idea what part of Florida (is it Florida?) that is?

Poor babies, RIP.:( :( :(

I find that offensive, disgusting..and sadly enough...all too believable. There was an incident a year or two ago here in the midwest where a creamatorium had human bodies stacked up decomposing in storage sheds and the like because the creamation oven broke and they didn't want to spend the money for the part. Also a similar story with a funeral home stacking up bodies in the basement. I believe in that instance they were taking the money for the interment but not interring the bodies.
Its a twisted and greedy world we live in.

That saddens, sickens and disgusts me. I can't help thinking that what if that were my dog in those photos. That one of the collar was sad in itself. This is why I'm having Duke cremated. I would either do that or bury him on my property. But, I probably won't be living here the rest of my life so I prefer cremation. I hope those people don't ever sleep good again and the bad karma comes back to them. I would be so distraught if I knew that my animal had gone there.

I think now that it's gone public, they should be looking for another line of work. Very dis-heartening when people can't even be trusted to carry out wishes of the dying.

Somebody making money from people that are grieving for their lost pets, very sick! Some people will do anything for money.

I just don't understand how they got away with it for so long. I mean where did the people go to visit the grave? Did they have a mock cemetery set up or what?

I just don't understand some people...

I can't describe how angry or disgusted I am. I must say though that a moment of 'ha ha you stupid #@$%&' when they went to the site with the reporter.

From what I gather from reading your posts...is that these people were charging for pet burial/cremation and just not doing it ?!?!?! I can't access the link from my computer, so a synopsis would be apreiciated....ugh. People WILL do anything for money, it's disgusting. I hate money myself...I've been rich and I've been poor and I've found that cash, while making it easier to be comfortable doesn't bring true joy...
Pets do though!
Thanx in advance to anyone who gives me more info!

Here is the article that was originally posted. I typed in www.nbc-2.com and found numerous pet related articles listed there, as well. I don't think the original link is working any longer.

FORT MYERS — A pet cemetery promising to give animals a dignified burial instead left them uncovered to rot in mass graves. NBC2's exclusive investigation exposed one of the largest pet burial services in Florida.

Jancy's Pet Cemetery, located in Zellwood, located north of Orlando, is the pet burial service about 60 percent of veterinarians in Southwest Florida contract with. If your family has ever had a pet put to sleep in our area, there's a good chance it ended up there.

In their literature, Jancy promises to provide pet owners a dignified burial for their lost loved ones. And with a short visit there, that's exactly what you might think you're getting. Nothing on the surface around the memorial stones seems out of place.

But if you look a few hundred feet over in the other direction, hidden right over a man made hill, you'll find the communal burial grounds, where pets are laid to rest in groups and out of sight.

That's where NBC2 discovered a scene one pet owner says is right out of a horror movie, where pets were left outside for birds to pick apart, and where unburied pet skeletons stare up at you from the ground.

Watch Mark Greenblatt's report

"This is as close as I've ever been to hell on earth," said pet owner Paul Lohr.

Lohr's dog of 11 years, "She-Kai," was laid to rest somewhere in the communal grounds. Two months ago, Lohr brought his ailing pet to the Camelot Isles Animal Clinic in Cape Coral, which euthanized She-Kai after a long sickness.

Like so many other veterinarians in Florida, Camelot Isles handed She-Kai's body over to Jancy's. As Lohr looked around at how Jancy has treated so many other pets, he's deeply troubled.

"It gives me a feeling that he isn't resting as he should be. His body wasn't treated with respect," Lohr said.

Florida law says animal bodies have to be buried at least two feet underground, and can't be left out where birds and other live animals can reach them.

But at Jancy's group burial site, dozens of black bags with animals inside poke out from shallow graves. In some cases, the pets are left with their legs sticking up from the ground – in other instances they're almost entirely exposed.

Click here to see images from the burial site - WARNING: Graphic images

And all over the burial site, bulldozer tracks run right over pets that are supposed to be resting, according to Jancy, "With the utmost respect and dignity."

"This is unhealthy. It's gross. It's negligence. It's disgusting," said Dr. Bill Goldston, a veterinarian and member of the executive board of directors of the Florida Veterinary Medical Association.

Goldston represents more than 2,000 veterinarians across the state. After watching the NBC2 video, he says he'll warn every veterinarian in the state about what he saw.

Goldston says the way the animals are being treated is not only unprofessional, but can easily spread disease among animals and humans.

"I believe this is a public health hazard – a public health threat," Goldston said.

NBC2 sat down with Carl and Dew Drop Begley, the owners of Jancy Pet Burial Services, to talk about their services and their background.

NBC2: You never had any training before?
Carl Begley: Oh no, no, no, no… not in pets.

Begley expressed pride in how quickly he and his wife rose to prominence in the industry, even before they bought Jancy, their very first pet cemetery.

But his mood quickly changed when we showed him the video of the animals at his group burial site.

NBC2: This is how you left them for the weekend.
Carl Begley: No, no that most certainly was not.

At first, both Begleys denied any involvement or responsibility for what NBC2 found at the site.

Dew Drop Begley: That kind of thing does not happen.
NBC2: Three separate weeks its happened like this.
DD: So you say. I don't believe that. You can say anything you want to.
NBC2: We've got videotape.
DD: Videotape don't mean a darn thing.

So we asked the Begleys if the feelings of pet owners, like Lohr, who trusted Jancy with his pet dog, meant anything to them.

NBC2: He says this is the closest place he's ever been to hell on earth. How does that make you feel?
Dew Drop: Well, he must be a disgruntled person for whatever reason. I don't know.
NBC2: Wouldn't that make you disgruntled, if that happened to your dog?
DD: If that happened, yes. But I don't necessarily believe, because you're no better than a lot of others that have come in here with the same thing.

The Begleys continued to deny the NBC2 video was recorded at the property, but eventually made us an offer we couldn't refuse.

Carl Begley: We could go up to the communal burial grounds right now.
NBC2: You want to take me up there?
CB: Sure.

With our cameras rolling, we arrived on site and we didn't walk 15 steps before discovering more bones, and more pets above ground – this time with Carl Begley right by our side. That's when he put an immediate stop to the tour of his property.

NBC2: If we went right up above that hill, what do you think we'd find?
Carl Begley: I don't know, because we're not going there.

But on our way out, right around a different hill, we saw the same shallow graves and the same dog we'd captured on video from more than a week ago – still almost totally exposed to the elements.

NBC2: What do you want to tell people, when they see pictures like that dog, outside, above ground?
Carl Begley: [silence]
NBC2: You don't have anything to say?
CB: I didn't say that, you did.

So we asked again.

NBC2: What do you want to tell people when they see this dog above ground?
Carl Begley: They will be covered up and we will try to take care of that in a more appropriate manner.

But for Lohr, there's no promise Jancy Pet Burial Services or the Begleys can make now that will regain his trust.

"It's been very hard for both my wife and I," Lohr said.

Coming up Friday on NBC-2 News at 6:00, we'll show you why many more of our pets could fall victim to the same treatment across the state. We'll also reveal what steps could be taken right now to ensure every pet is buried with dignity.

Not to mention the injections that vets euthanise pets with is poisonous to wildlife that encounter and eat the remains. Birds have been known to die in masses to to such negligence, not to mention other scavengers. Here's another related story...hope everyone sues the crap out of these creeps!! LEE COUNTY— NBC2 has uncovered new allegations against Florida's largest pet burial company, Jancy Pet Burial Service. Many people have wondered about the company's cremation service. Pet owner Kathleen Ford revealed Jancy cremated her beloved cat, but when she got the ashes back she found something else.

NBC2's pictures of animals at Jancy's group burial grounds brought back a horrifying memory for Kathleen Ford of Fort Myers. Her beloved cat Garrett passed away two years ago and she sent his body to Jancy's to be cremated.

"I took him out of the bag and noticed there was something metal inside the bag. It was a tag that said canine dog. It was a dog tag," said Ford.

NBC2: You got a dog tag back?
Ford: Yes
NBC2: But you sent your cat up to Jancy?
Ford: Correct

Jancy's sent a letter of apology, saying they were extremely sorry ford found foreign materials in her cremains. It also refunded her money.

After NBC2 uncovered how Jancy treated so many other animals, Ford wonders about the seven other animals she had cremated.

"Now I wonder whether the other ones sitting in the china cabinet are actually our animals," said Ford.

Late Friday, a commissioner in Orange County, where Jancy's is located, said he will crack down on Jancy.

"We're going to make sure it is handled right from now on," said Bob Sindler, Orange County Commissioner.

The story has also attracted the attention of State Senator Dave Aronberg. He saw NBC2's investigation and is researching ways for the state to start regulating the pet burial industry.

About our "local" pet cemetary which aint so local- they get business from the whole state I believe because there are so few. I have 3 cremated cats from them- I always figured it was a mix of pets i got after our friend Renny said she paid an extra hundred to have just her Zsa in one container. They never offered it to me- that's why I'm now a bit nervous! Maybe my cats got thrown in dumpsters and what's in the containers is God Knows What!

Ugh!! That's disgusting! The nerve of some people!!

I've already found a place that will do cremations for when the time comes. Our local pound charges a little over $100 for private cremations and I think $20 or so for general cremations. The difference, I have no idea but if having a private one done means having JUST my animal's remains, then I'd definately pay for that.

The local animal control offers a similar service and are actually quite reputable. They even have nice headstones and you can get a plot there too the place is kind of like a pet memorial park...quite lovely....I see how well just a local animal control does and then I see stories like this where people are just con artists...

I wish there were more decient people in this world.....

I've been hit with the virus from hell several times (panleukopenia) and lost enough to break my heart, but I go on for the ones still out there. I am not in the financial state to cremate all my losses, but I've had a special rescued border collie, and my special needs rescued kitty cremated. I specified for Willy (the kitty) private cremation, but for all those opting for 'other'...well enough said. Even now I have to wonder. I prefer burial in my yard, but space is limited. :(

wow thats just about the sickest thing a company can do to make money. All of our pets that pass away we bury in our backyard. Don't have to deal with that kinda BS is it really too hard for these people to bury an animal right or cremate right. Not like its hard or time takeing makes me wonder about other companys like that.

Whats sad is Ive heard of places doing that with people too! My grandfather reciently passed away and the thought that we might have gotten someone elses ashes *or even none at all* sickens me. I saw on Nightline *I think* of a place that stacked bodies like that....I think that was mentioned erlier in this post somewhere....cause the equipment broke and they didnt want to fork the $$ to replace it :(
Agh people are horible!!!!

Thats why good people need to fight to make things better!

This is INFURIATING!! It's sick and disgusting and I'd hate to meet a person who could do that to an animal. Hopefully once they clean the place up the pets can finally RIP, knowing that someone does really care.

05-14-2004, 11:21 PM
I too, remember seeing that cemetary on the news where they were piling up those bodies with no thought of the families nor respect of the dead. I was disgusted by that, and am just as disgusted right now about this Jancy Pet Cemetary! Evidently these people are without conscience! And as some of you said, they are just greedy-greedy and heartless.

To those of you that has had your your pet done this way, my heart goes out to you, and I have hopes that your pet will finally rest in peace.
