View Full Version : Conversations with your cat?

Fister is getting a little more talkative lately, so we have a few conversations - something like:

- Miaw!
- Are you really that bored?
- Miaww!
- So you want me to come and play with the string again?
- Miaww, miaww!!
- Oh, you also want to be brushed? How could I forget!!
- Miaww!
- And in your butt too??
- Miaww, miaww!!

He likes to hide behind a door and will catch it when it slides past him - he can go on and on and making me run around ..... and after a bit of brushing, he sticks his butt right up and wants me to brush there too.

... and when he's been in his litterbox:

- Miaww!
- Yes, I know you've been in there, do you really want me to empty it every single time?
- Miawww!
- I'll just let it cool down a bit first.
- Miaww!
- OK, point taken!

Then it's time for a race through all the rooms!

When there's liver or raw fish in the kitchen, it goes like this - and he can get to the kitchen in 2 seconds flat, even if he's fast asleep in the bedroom!!

- Miaww, miaww!!
- Ok, ok, do you want a small slice?
- MIAWW, MIAWW, MIAWW, MIAWW!!
- Here you go! :)

I have to be real quick putting it on the pan, he won't give up until the table is empty.

.... and in the evening, when he's sitting on the bed, waiting for us.
- Miawww! .... Miaww! ..... Miaww!!
- It's much too early to go to bed, Fister
- Miaww,
- You'll have to wait a little longer, while we finish what we're doing!
- Miaw, miaww, miawww!!
- we'll come and cuddle in a minut.
- mew!! (pityful)

Lucky he doesn't talk so much during the night - I suppose he's given up, since there's no response! :D

Do you have similar conversations with your cat?

My conversations with Juni are much longer and really interesting :)

With Pichu are much shorter and to the point :) (which is food)

Randi,
I need you to come to my house, as you seem to speak better Cat than I do. I can't always distinguish between "Miawaw" and "Miawawaw". I think my cats speak to me just to hear themselves talk! Like some hoomans I know.

Monte has this very peculiar noise. It isn't really a chirp, a meow, or a cry. It nearly sounds like a noise a primate would make (chimp, monkey, ape). I look at him and say, "Monte, come here", and he makes the noise, but no movement forward. I think it must be some kind of teenage sound...like, 'uh, no, forget it'.

Fister sounds very mature and intelligent. As I knew he would. :D

I think I know the sound you mean - and isn't it frustrating not being able to write it down!! I love these chirpy sounds! We should get a list together with different cat sounds. ;) Before we got Fister, I would not have believed how many different sounds a cat has.

Vio, I bet you have interesting conversations with Juni! :D

My cat Cochese always meows randomly, but lately he's been making this weird growl meow sound when he eats and he almost like spits the food out and jumps when he does it too.

A funny thing with Fister is that he never miaws for food, even when he's really hungry. He just sits in the kitchen next to his empty plate and looks angelic, sometimes for ages.
"Where's Fister? Haven't seen him for a while. Oh! There you are! What are you doing in here?" (As if I didn't know.)

If it gets really bad, he'll find us and try and lead us into the kitchen, where he will then sit by the plate and wait patiently. Weird, but we're definately not going to teach him any more miawing, we have enough chit-chat in this house as it is! :D

Ah yes, my Mishi is the talker in this house. I wish my Cat-o-nese was better as I do have a hard time trying to figure out what he's saying. Talking back to him usually ends up with him leading me to his food bowl - he likes company when he eats. Sometimes he even mutters under his breath - which is really hilarious! I think he's usually grumbling that he's not too crazy about his food. Silly boy - I buy only the best for my fur kids.

My kitty, Dakky, used to do this. I thought he was purring, inhaling and eating all at the same time!

- Here you go! :) I think he means he wants a BIG slice!

I hold conversations with my 4 all the time, but Chester is the one who is most vocal. He 'tattles' on the others, gives his opinions on everything, even if I don't want it, gives daily weather reports from his windows, and seems impressed with his own voice to no end. :D

My cat Scamp, talks to me only in questions! "Eh, eh?, Eh, eh?" This is what he asks me if he's in the next room- as if "where are you?". So when i say, "I'm in here!" He comes running in and jumps in my lap. But he mostly asks the question when I'm right next to him on the bed. He has half the bed. He lies alongside the pillow, belly up and back legs in my space. If I turn to lie on my left side (away from him), several seconds go by and then he is awakened by my moving and starts with the Eh eh? and continues till I invite him over in front of me so he can be spooned.
He was rescued at age 4 weeks (by me) and had to be bottle fed. I often wonder if he would take to the bottle again (just for fun to see) but never have tried it. He's a giant brown tabby. "Eh, eh?"

Tubby is the big talker in our house, and he's taken to making this noise in his throat quite often instead of actually meowing. If he sees Peanut he'll make that noise, if she moves he'll make that noise, if he sees me he'll make that noise, if I move he'll make that noise, if he sees Terry he'll make that noise.....I think you get the picture. He does it ALL the time lately, and yes, even at 2, 3 and 4 in the morning. The only actual meow he does that I don't understand is the yowling from the basement. Another thing he does all the time lately. I've heard that this is common in older cats and it's almost like kitty alzheimers where he doesn't know where we are.....but he'll be sitting on the couch right next to me, jump up and go downstairs and start yowling. I was right there and [/b]he[/b] left, so I just really don't get the yowling thing.

Peanut has become much more of a talker too as she gets older. She used to never say a word, now she's turning into a demanding little.....stinker. ;) She meows for treats, she meows if we don't go upstairs when she wants us to, she meows when it's bedtime and we're not quite ready yet, she meows when she wants to get up on Terry's lap when he's on the computer and she just meows...well, not ALL the time, but quite often compared to what she used to.

As for me holding conversations with them, well, sometimes they don't get treats until we've had a full conversation.

Who wants treats?
<nothing>
I said, who wants treats?
mrrrr (Tubby's throat noise)
Oh, Tubby wants treats? What about your sister, where's she?
mrrrr
Oh, there you are sweetie, you want treats too.
<nothing but the "I'm starving please feed me" eyes>
Ok, first of all we get medicine, who wants medicine?
<nothing>
Ok Tubby, you first.
mrrr ack,ack ack (as he chokes on the liquid medicine)
Now you Peanut, now wait, come back here!
ack, ack,ack (as she chokes on the liquid medicine)
Ok one more than we get treats, who wants treats?
mow-wow (from Peanut) mrrrr (from Tubby)
Peanut wants treats, what a good little girl, here you go
MOW-WOW
Ok, how 'bout you Tubby, you want treats too?
MRROOWWWWW
Ok, ok, here you go big boy.

And so on and so on and so on....:D

Lately, Fister is talking more, especially when he wants me come and brush him or cuddle. He goes on and on until I can't concentrate on what I'm doing and give in.

Johanna, isn't it fun to see when they purr and yawn and try to say say something all at the same time. :D

MOFF! Yes, there's no doubt he wants a bigger slice! I really try to only give him what his tummy can handle - but boy, can he be persuasive!!

Oh Debbie, I can just picture Peanut and Tubby sitting there chatting away, telling you exactly what they want you do. :)

Eddie is a talker. He can never enter a room without announcing his presence....even in the middle of the night! He also has this most annoying, demanding sound when he wants to play with my foot. And he SNORTS!

Oh, and I forgot to add, it sounds something like this.....

Caution, Tubby comes through loud and clear so if you're at work, you might want to adjust your volume. ;) :D

Tigris in the litter box:

Mreeawww (means: This is hard work!!!)

After that:

Meeee awwww! (Clean it slave!)

Meeaww (tenderly) (Just a little food please).

Tigris too talks more with each year. Filou talks less but sometimes you can hear him in the staircase:

Meew.......Mew.........Meew....

Means: I'm lost in the wood, gimme a signal:D

very fun!! Unfortunatly I had the volume all the way up so when it started, Scamp FLEW out of my lap in fear!! (good, less cat hair on my work clothes!). Anyway, can you make it longer? Like as long as they could hold this up? That would be so much fun!! To see how long they could go back and forth like that! Cute, cute, cute!

You know when Juni doesn't say a word?

When she wants to steal my boyfriend (or my sister's), she would IGNORE me totally, quietly go to him, and make him pet her, she'll give him headbumpies, nosekisses and so on :) She LOVES men ;)

My sister's bf has allergy from her fur (less from Pichu's), but he HAS to pet her :)

But she is happy to talk about them after they left :) She is a little gossip.

Thanks Leslie. :D They'll keep it up as long as I'm standing over them holding the dishes with their treats. :D

Vio, that is so funny that Juni is such a little gossip! :D :D

My!!!! Finally, I could watch Tubby and Peanut with sound. Tubby is such a macho cat and Peanut is a little Princess. I wish I could take a video with sound of my two darlings meowing :)

I love the Tubby and Peanut video!! That is so cute! Tubby would be hard to miss wouldn't he? How funny! Those two are so adorable!

Leroy is my yakker when it comes to conversation. He will banter back and forth with me for some time. Pete, Pepper Jack, and Sammy usually answer me with a few responses but most of the mouthing is done when it is time for dinner.

In more ways than one. Not only is he loud, but he has to be the middle of attention all the time. Although I have noticed lately that he doesn't jump right in like he used to. Some friends came over last night and normally Tubby is right there at the door to greet them, but he didn't get up and start sniffing at them until they had been in the house for about 10 minutes or so! 'Course these friends are over somewhat frequently so Tubby knows them and may not have to check them out the instant they walk in the door. :D

Wilber is the biggest loud mouth in the whole world. I have no idea why he's meowing all the time, but I suspect it's too remind me how handsome he is (like I could ever forget) or to let me know he's still there :)

Our conversation goes:

Wilber - "Meow" - It's more of a shouting meow.
Me: Yes, I know you're handsome.
Wilber - Meow, meow - louder still
me: Extremely handsome
Wilber: Me-oooow or Eh
Me: Come give me kissies handsome guy.

We play "squirrel" on the rope wrapped post in the basement all the while Chip's going from one side of the post to the other MRrrrAWWWLL??? And GLLLLBrroww? He's a FINE FINE FELINE!!! Lexie is the chatty one in the household, she is great, she always responds when I talk to her, it is like she is answering me, I love when they miaow and nothing comes out, so cute, she makes lovely little chirps as well, I swear she knows everything I say to her.
Ash is very non-vocal, but on occasion he suprises me with a miaow, he growls more often, as he is a grumpy-puss most of the time, but he has very endearing qualities as well, both my kitties never constantly miaow for food or hang around miaowing, if they did I would think something was wrong, mind you they never know what it is like to be hungry lol.:) :D their rather rounded tummies are proof of that.

Beau is my talkative one. His voice is louder than any other cat I have had too. When sitting in an open window, he talks to things outside. He also talks to his toys when playing with them.

Felicia is non-vocal, but I seem to understand her better than Beau.

Tito talks all the time. Especially when I first come home ("maaaaaaaooooowwww pet me"), when I am in the kitchen ("mrrrrooooow feed me") or when he can't find me ("rrrrow I'm lost"). Sophie never meows. I have never once heard her meow. She is, however, quite good at squealing when she and Tito are wrestling, when she's been held too long, or when she's at the vet's!! She's my little squeaker!:D

My three are more active than vocal. At feeding time, all three start meowing loudly and frantically until the dish arrives on the floor. Then all is quiet.

Miley meows at me when she has brought me a gift in bed or when I am at the computer. The gift could be as silly as a stick of butter, a bag of muffins, a bag of treats, a bag of raisins...you name it..... even garlic....... She is so proud of herself!
