Costco checks hot dog after woman claims she bit into bullet at Irvine store
Associated Press
IRVINE, Calif. - Costco workers checked the merchandise at its food court and found nothing out of the ordinary after a woman claimed she bit into a bullet while eating a hot dog, the company's chief executive officer said Wednesday.
Police interviewed workers and opened all of the approximately 25 remaining hot dog packages after Olivia Chanes, 31, reported the incident, CEO Jim Sinegal said.
"We checked everything thoroughly," Sinegal said by phone from Costco's corporate office near Seattle. "Obviously, it's regrettable. ... The question is when could something like this happen."
Chanes told police she was eating the hot dog Sunday afternoon at the store in Irvine, about 40 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, when she bit into something hard and found what officers determined was a live 9 mm round.
Chanes, of Mission Viejo, later went to the hospital complaining of stomach pains and X-rays found what appeared to be another bullet in her stomach, The Orange County Register reported. Doctors told her the metal round would eventually pass out of her system, the newspaper said.
The company CEO said he was not aware of any legal claim filed by Chanes. Police and the Orange County Health Department are investigating the incident.
The Hebrew National hot dogs are carefully prepared, go through a screening process and pass through a metal detector before they leave the factory - making it extremely unlikely the bullets entered before distribution, Sinegal said.
"This is such an extraordinary thing," he said. "It's difficult to understand how this could have happened."

I would have noticed a bullet in MY wienie!!
(I don't write the stories--Just the punchlines..)

Richard that is where my head was first when I clicked here.
:o :o What a relief when I actually read the article. :p
The Hebrew National hot dogs ..... go through a screening process and pass through a metal detector before they leave the factory -.
I found this to be a bit bizarre. Why would they need to do that? Is it so hard to keep bullets out of wieners? :D

lol,
Sounds like the 'condom in the soup' story awhile back...
A bullet will explode when subjected to heat around 200 degrees...If that sucker was grilled......
The first bullet she swallowed she mistook for her something wrong with her braces and notice that there were two bullets, One to swallow and one to show to the cops, doctors, store managers....
I wonder what a bullet in the weiner is worth???
;)
You are forgiven for thinking 'in the gutter',
it wasn't hard to twist that headline around!!:D

IT's called the "Great Outdoors" with John Candy.
The premise is a family vacation in the mountains
There is a family of raccoons that show up to scavenge the trash cans......The Mom raccoon warns the kids not to eat the hot dogs because they are made with lips and 'rear ends'.
The water skiing scene is a blast too!
check it out!!:D

I'm sure the metal detectors at the factory are to keep hotdogs with bits of metal that may have come off of any number of the machines in the grinding/processing part of the plant from going out to consumers.
The question is - do they SELL 9mm ammunition at that store, and do they record those transactions ...

I once interviewed with a national candy company. It was a horrifying experience but....germane to this thread....they had a metal detector at the end of the line. Said it was because they "had trouble getting the peanuts clean."

Bullets in weiners? Is this related to the question, "is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just ...."?
Richard, if you aren't too busy, I have some legal research for you to do...with your investigatory skills what they are, I could use your help!

lol,
I'd already be in jail......
I have no investigation skills....I'm naturally suspicious....I also had a problem with the x-ray.... The bullet was pretty far down in her abdomen, it looked like it was in her intestines already........it takes a while to clear your stomach...;)
Why not go to the bathroom and induce vomiting to keep the bullet from going thru your GI tract?
I don't know what Costco sells...
p.s. I DO love a kooky story.

Metal detectors are required by the FDA to screen out bits of metal that may get into food during processing. This reminds me of one we had while I was working in QC at a soda factory.....someone sued saying they found a mouse in a can of soda, and they knew the mouse got into the can at our plant because there were little bits of welding flash on the mouse. Only one problem with that claim, aluminum cans aren't welded, they have a rolled seal in them.

Please keep all welding equipment away from my wieners.
I don't need to buy them pre cooked

This is like the Pepsi incedent a while back where the lady "found" a hypodermic needle in her pepsi can. Turned out she PUT it there just to fleece PepsiCo out of a few million dollars...could this be true here too?
Sigh why use a 9mm anyhow....those bullets are expensive! Use a .22 they're much much cheaper :-)
less dangerous too if they explode on a grill ;-)
