Tear Stains On Poodles???

Does anyone here know of a good way to remove tear stains from poodles? My groomer doesn't seem to be able to get them out. :confused:

I just did a search.....Here's something that might help to remove the stains....I copied it straight from the site's page:

"Use equal amounts of Milk of Magnesia, corn starch and hydrogen peroxide to make a paste. Brush paste on to dog's face, and work well into the stain. Allow paste to dry overnight. Wash out in the morning and condition. Repeat for several days until stains have disappeared."

"A mixture of 1/2 lemon and 1/2 baking soda works wonders when it comes to whitening coats. Make a paste and work into fur. Let the paste set for 5-10 minutes and wash and rinse thoroughly. Lemon juice can irritate your animal's skin, so be sure to rinse well. Follow procedure with conditioner."

A great tear stain product. Daily use will help to keep the eye area stain free."

Also, the site said something about making sure it's only cosmetic tearing first, and, not an underlying allergy or something. It also said that you could add vinegar to the dog's water to help prevent further staining....

Tear stains are just those.....stains. They don't come out. What can help is to wash the area daily preventing new stains from setting in as the hair grows.

Oh and I believe it is thought that adding apple cider vinegar to the food helps with staining, not just regular vinegar....I'm not sure how true that is.

the site I found just said vinegar. I don't know though, I've never owned a white dog. My friend got the stains off her maltese, when he was about five years old. I can't remember what she did, though! Maybe I'll email her and see if she remembers....

Often times tear stains can partly be contributed to diet. I forgot to mention that before.

Your groomer doesn't get them out because you can NOT get them out, not in one trip any way.

The only thing I know of that breeders use is boric acid solution, but they use it constantly! it is not a once and done thing. And I can't even say for sure if it will REMOVE ones that are already there or if it only works as a preventative BEFORE the stain gets bad.

You CAN get ride of tear stains!

I'm using a combination of inexpensive methods to keep FizzGigg's face free from tear stains:

Giving him distilled water. (I still let her drink from a bowl. Drinking from a bottle only perhaps is necessary for showdogs but I won't put my FizzGigg through that)

Dabbing cornstarch powder under the inside corners of his eyes everyday. (This helps "absorbs" the tears/mucus and becomes a little crusty. Tears do not "streak", therefore no stains)

Not feeding him treats/food with dye/coloring.

The EYE ENVY product I ordered also helps alot but do not need it anymore due to the above practices

Fret not, with perserverance, those tear stains will be gone!

Thanks, this makes sense. I always tell my grooming customers to keep the area DRY. But never thought of the cornstarch.

Reece luckily doesn't get tear stains, but I have successfully cleaned them off of some shelter Poodles. I usually just go to the pet store and buy those wipes. They help if the problem is mild. They do help on severe staining, but they won't take it completely away. The suggestions everyone gave you above will probably work well - haven't tried them myself but they sound good!
