When my roommate got a husky, we named him Nikolai. I like naming dogs according to their origin. We looked up Russia in the encyclopedia and read it, and, found a mathmatician named Nikolai something. :) Your puppy is very pretty! The only thing I remember about training Nik was to make it short and sweet. His attention span was that of a toddler. :) And, at least until they're super trained (and, maybe not even after that, I don't know), but, keep her on leash. They're runners! My friend's dog jumped (climbed) a six foot fence almost every day until they finally realized that they couldn't leave her outside all alone. And, they're usually so friendly, anyone can pick them up if they're just roaming. And, from what I've heard, their homing instinct sucks. Like they'll run and run and run, and, then have a hard time finding their way back. That's just what I remember from researching when Nikolai came into our home. :) Good luck, though, they're wonderful friends.

Ok, I finally made it on. I've been very busy and my computer is acting up big time. Ack! Talk about frustating!

The little girl is still nameless. Shame on us! We have been trying out all kinds of names and just can't seem to find one that we think fits. I've never had such a problem with a name before. Alden was calling her Izzy before he left for work. Short for Isabelle or Isabella. Bran and Ashley are leaning towards Layla. My mom says Kelly and I am completely lost and keep calling her little girl or lil pup. I love alot of the names you guys have mentioned and have been trying out alot of them. Tomorrow is my deadline! I have to make a decision.

Now, for more info about my little girl. Alden said he wanted to think of something special to get me for my 40th bday which is actually on the 29th and he heard about someone wanting to get rid of this husky pup so he thought he would check it out. He gave the person a call and found out the she was red and white and I think that was the kicker for him. He said he thought she was gorgeous right from the start even though she was a big filthy mess. She was an outdoor pup running around with her mom (who was also a big mess) on a farm like place. Lil girl was born on Jan. 5th which is also kind of cool because Katie was born April 5th. which is my bday month and Jan. is Alden's bday month. I don't know what she weighs yet. She has had no shots at all. First thing in the morning I will be calling the vet and getting her in as quick as possible. I'm so worried that she could be carrying something. I tried to call when I found this out this afternoon but they were already closed. She seems very healthy but that doesn't really mean anything. She has had two accidents in the house today which I don't think is too bad. She slept with Brandon all night and woke him up early this morning when I was getting ready for work. I took her out and stayed with her and she peed FOREVER and then she went and had a nice healty bowel movment. I was so proud of her...hehehe.

The most important thing to me right now is KATIE. I want to make sure that she knows that everything is just fine and she is my special girl. I have to admit I was feeling so bad for her last night. She didn't behave very well at the dog park. She got into quite a few scrapes with some of the other dogs and a few of the fights were pretty nasty. I have never seen her behave this way before and I am really worried about it. Then we come home and there is a new puppy in her living room and the puppy kept snipping and growling and biting at her. The puppy was very nervous and scared when she saw Katie. Finally Katie got mad and let her have it. When I finally went to bed last night I laid down on the living room floor with katie and cried a bit and tried to reassure her that everything would be just fine. I know that sounds silly, but it is important to me. Well, today is a whole different story! Thank goodness! I hurried home on my lunch hour and found Alden and the pups out back and they were playing away and Alden said they had been like that since he got out of bed. It was so fun to watch. They even started playing tug of war with one of Katies stuffed toys. It never stops though. They are constantly together and rough housing. Wow, we have our hands full. I am exhausted. If I separate them the pup whines. Actually she makes lots of funny whiney noises. She is so different from katie. I put her in Katie's crate so they could finally take a break and she whined so Katie went and laid beside the crate and they slept like that. They have even been drinking out of the same water bowl together. I think that is amazing. I have not been able to get many pics of the pup by herself since they are always together and I haven't wanted to single her out and make Katie jealous. I'll wait and do that when things calm down a bit. We have never had more than one dog before so this is a whole new experience for us also. So exciting! Ok, I'm through gabbing now so I will post a few pics in the next post. By the way, the pup is once again sleeping with Brandon and katie is by my side here at the computer. all is peaceful right now. I have not had much sleep because I was so excited and I have to be at work at 6 am in the morning. Yuck! After this I am off to bed. Good thing is that I get off at 11am tomorrow. I will have all day with my girls!

P.S. I did lots of puppy shopping after work today. New crate for the pup, a bed to put inside it, new collar, leash, puppy food. Not a single toy though! I have plenty at home and figured I already spent enough money. I know it won't be long before I start loading up on new ones though....LOL

Diana, I know. I was so worried too. I was just telling Kay Ann a little bit ago that we do not leave them alone at all. We know that is taking a big risk. Katie could easily hurt her even if she didn't mean to. It will take some time before we are comfortable and know that all is well. Things are looking good so far though and we are doing are best to see that it stays that way. Love the name Brandy but it is our little niece's name....lol...well I guess I shouldn't say little now. she is graduating this year. Gosh where does the time go!

I totally understand!!! That was my main concern when I added Ripley to our little fur family. :) If, as they say, a picture is worth 1,000 words it would seem that you can put your worries to rest. Good news. We will be going to see the white coats tonite. Talked to the vet and tonite is one of his late hour nights so we will be going at 6:30. I am so relieved that she will finally be getting checked out and started on her shots. Katie will be going also she is due for her heartworm medicine. I have already talked to the nurse and I told her I was concerned about the heartworm shot and that I think I want to switch over to the chewables. She said it wouldn't be any problem since Katie is all up to date on everything. Can't wait to get them both weighed.
The bad news....No Name yet! It is driving me crazy! I have never had this problem before. We have been batting around everything you guys have thrown out plus others. I am very frustrated. Has anyone ever had this problem before?

I'll report back on the vet visit later.

Glad to hear things are going smoothly. I had a lot of the same feelings you did when we first added Cincy to our family. At first Sadie wanted nothing to do with her amd the first night I cried and cried, certain we had made a huge mistake. But you've seen them now, and it obviuos has worked well.

I think adding a puppy was the right way to go. Katie will adjust better that way, I think, then she would have with another adult dog. I do wonder how Katie will handle it if you bring them both to the park. She may be very protective of her baby girl and that will be something to watch whenver other dogs are around. In fact, the thought crossed my mind that some of Katie's moodiness on Sunday mayhave been a desire to protect Dee Dee. Just a thought.

Hi Everyone! The vet visit was a huge success! My lil' girl is healthy as can be. YAY! Alden was worried to death about me taking both dogs but I told him I could handle it. It was a breeze. Katie rode in the back seat just like always and Lil' Bit rode up front. Both of them very well behaved and both of them like to ride in the car. Matter of fact Lil' Bit fell asleep sitting and leaning against the seat. She is adorable! No, Lil' Bit is not her name. It is just my nickname for her. Still no name :( The vet said if I still couldn't figure it out by our next visit that he would help me out and name her for me. So I have one month.....hehehe. The vet said eyes, ears and teeth all look great and she seems to be in excellent health. She had a big shot and some liquid stuff. I think that was the dewormer stuff. We also got some frontline. I said the wrong date for her bday. It is jan. 10th. So she is just a little over 3 months old about 15 weeks I think it is. She is weighing in at 20 pounds. I was shocked and couldn't believe she weighed that much. I think that may even be more thanwhat Katie weighed at that age. I'll have to look it up. Of course Katie was sick for awhile when we first got her. Miss Katie herself was a huge hit at the vet's! Everyone loved her and she loved everyone. There was even 2 cats sitting at the door and she justs wiggles and wags and sniffs at them. she was so well behaved. The receptionist just went on and on and kept petting and hugging on her and saying she just couldn't believe how friendly she was and that usually she is intimidated by Akitas but Katie is nothing like the others that she sees. Katie's vet has quite a few Akita clients because his wife use to breed them. They have 4 akitas themselves. The receptionist told the doc that she wanted to take Katie home with her. Then another couple came in and just went on and on about her also. They thought she looked like she just had a bath and couldn't believe how pretty she was. Actually katie is in need of a bath. They just couldn't get over her personality either and then I found out why. they were there to pick up there own akita who had just got spayed. Her name was Zoey. She looked very pretty but kind of hard to tell because she looked a little goofy still...lol. They said there dog did not have quite as friendly personality as Katie. I told Dr. Roll about the dog park and he said that akitas can be strange like that and that I have to keep a constant eye on her. I let out a big sigh and said "I know". He has always warned us. That is why we try so hard to make sure she is well socialized. He said I am doing a great job with her and to not let that discourage me though. He said that maybe that first fight with Kia and her getting her ear hurt may have triggered her behavior for the rest of the day. Could be it. Diana has a good point also. Maybe it had something to do with Dee Dee and being protective. I was also thinking that when I had her on her leash beside me at the table maybe she was being protective of me when the other dogs came around. I don't know what started that first fight with katie and kia. I didn't see it start. It just happened so quick. Did you see what happened, Kimmy? I have just never seen Katie like that. Yes, she has had a few fights but it has always been because a dog attacked her first. This was not the case on Sunday and I was very floored by it all. Oh yes, one more thing. The vet said kudos to you and Amy for your quick thinking and your first aid training and kit. Well done, ladies! Gosh, I'm sorry I have been rambling on and on. I'm always writing novels on here. About the name thing...we have had several family talks trying to pick out a name and it seems that every time someone mentions a name I am always saying oh no we can't because so and so has that name. Like Ruby we all seemed to like it and then I say but we already have 2 Ruby's on pet talk, then one name was GiGi, oh can't do that because we have a new little doxie named gigi. Then Nala AND Kiara. Oh no Kay Ann would kill me! Nala is her little girls name and Kiara is a named planned for her next pup...hehehe. Keisha was a big hit and almost Katie's name but then I say Oh I can't do that. That was Anna's RB doggie and I wouldn't want her to maybe get sad when she hears the name and so on and so on. Finally Alden and Lea (my sis) said, STOP THAT!!!!! They said I know too many dogs from here and can't keep on doing that....LOL

To answer your first post, i do like Jazzy, i think it fits her...she has that look in her eye that says Jasmine to me...i think of Sophie for more of a smaller, curly haired dog, LOL :)

To answer your second question, on why we are up so late...i just got done posting about maybe getting a Swissie rescue companion (female) for Dale...it is under dog general...

Oh, Robyn, a swissie rescue! That would be so fantastic!!! I hope it all works out for you. To be honest, I thought maybe our next dog would be a rescue dog. Who could turn down a birthday gift like this though! In a way though I do feel like Alden saved her. I mean she wasn't living in the worse of situations but she was an outdoor pup with no shots and completely filthy and she now has a good home and lots of love. Who knows what might have happened to her. I never understand why someone has a dog running around like that and NO SHOTS!!!!

I have to apologize to everyone! I have been so wrapped up in myself and my job and the new pup and Katie that I have missed a lot of threads and I'm sure i'm missing lots of good stuff and great pics. I did the same thing the first night we got Abbey (she was our second). I cried and cried, thinking Kito would never be the same, and that we had made a terrible mistake. But then I cried because I had already fallen in love with Abbey........

Well...... I like Jazzy for dog's name but I am not crazy about Jasmine since my grandbaby is Jasmine. But that is silly because lots of people have Katie's, Jack's, Sadie's as children's names. I like Sophie but I don't think you should name your dog that just because Brandon likes it. After all it is YOUR dog and no matter what any one including any of us says, it should be YOUR choice. I highly doubt if any of us are going to be terribly hurt if you pick a name that we either had for a RB dog, a future dog or even a grandchild. We are all way tooo happy for you and your new baby!!!

As for choosing dog's names, the reason ours, except for Oreo, have the ones they do is because they came with those names. It probably would have been easy to change Snoopy or Taggert but we couldn't come up with anything we liked better so they stuck. (And Snoopy is one of the snoopiest dogs alive). Naming dogs, I think, is one of the hardest things to do.


By the way.... dogs on leashes tend to be a little more uptight around dogs that are loose, I've found. It's because they know they can't get away if need be and they go on the defensive.

I have found that to be true too - that is why I try to get people coming in to the dog park to let their dogs off the leash as they are coming in. It has to be very intimidating for a dog on a leash to come into a mass of loose dogs greeting him. You can see it as we approach the park along that trail. The dogs growl and fight to get through the fence at each other. Then when you enter they sniff each other and take off in all directions. Dazzi does it even with dogs she knows and gets along with - I guess it's just that thing - I'm tied up and your free but if I wasn't tied up and wanted too I could beat your @$$.

Thanks to everyone for all your help and advise. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions on how to handle things between 2 dogs. Right now the girls are even drinking from the same water bowl at the same time. Too Cute! We do feed them seprately right now. Don't want to push things, plus we have Tori on puppy food.
