You don't want to just use commercial "diet" food? Raw carrots are good lo-cal treats - less fattening than dog treats ...

And, don't free feed, if you are. :) I can't recommend any diet foods, because I don't feed processed dog food, but, I'm sure your vet can recommend one. And, stick to a schedule, and, only the amount of food recommended daily for how much your pooch is SUPPOSED to weigh. :) What does he eat now and how often? That might help others to help you....

I wouldn't recommend diet foods in general as they are mostly just a bunch of fillers.
What you can try is replacing some of his portion of kibble with green beans or canned pumpkin (not the pie filling). So if you take away 1/4 cup of kibble, add a 1/4 cup of green beans etc.
Also don't go by the bag as to how much food you should be feeding your dog. Most dog food bags list portions on the high side.
Some other things you can do are to feed several (2 - 3) small meals a day, and gradually cut back on portion size, and weigh him every couple weeks to see how his new portion is working for him. You want the weight loss to be slow. Most vets will let you walk in and weigh your dog, no appointment necessary.
And of course there is always the option of upping his exercise.
Good luck!!

I just spoke to a woman at a dog food store about diet foods. She recommended staying on the regular food we're on now for the same reasons Shelteez listed. I just cut back the kibble and upped the exercise. It's working like a charm. Kai has a nice figure now.

We have all four of ours on a diet. We are using the Senior formula for all of them, and supplementing with green beans, canned pumpkin and plain yogurt (not all at the same time, obviously). They are losing weight, for sure! Depending on the size of the dog, the food can be reduced a little at each feeding and the difference can be made up with one of the items I listed before. Our "big" dogs (Goldens and a Lab) are eating 1 cup each, in the morning and again at night.

I'm not very keen on diet foods bought from pet stores, or even the perscription ones.
I have Akina on a weight loss diet that myself and her doctor came up with from one of her text books.
Speak with your doctor about this diet first, to see if he/she approves of it for your dogs particular situation.
This meal is ment to be fed in small portions several times through out each day, along with GOOD exercise!
1/4 a pound of meat protein source. (Ex, Chicken, Lamb, Beef, etc) I personally use Wysong canned 100% Rabbit, because that's what I have around, and it's less work for me.
2 cups Carrots
2 Cups Green Beens
1/4 Cup Cottage Cheese
Daily Multi-vitamin
Dicalcium Phosphate.
