Former foster has FIP

I'm sorry to say that my former foster, Topazio has FIP (wet) and has not got much time left, only a couple days:(

Any advice and info would be helpful.

All my cats were integrated with him, I don't know if he brought it in from the shelter or if one of mine is a carrier.

Such devatasting news, and I'm very worried for my babies now too.


Please light a candle for Topazio to find his way efoortlessly to the RB.

I know much of what you are feeling and experiencing ... as I recently lost my Dudley to feline leukemia, and now it is a waiting game to see which others of mine may have it as well!

Rose, I've had FIP here as well many years ago. A litter of 8 (two litters combined, and nursed by two moms). They were all black, with the exception of a brown tabby who died within a day of my getting them here. I had no idea who was who from the last 7, so when it came time to combo test them (I got them batch tested) they all came out of the vets sporting paper collars with letters "A"-"G". I kept the collars on until all the little letter babies had been adopted. One wasn't quite right so I hung onto him. Within a month he had ballooned with wet form FIP and had to be euthanized. None of the others in the bunch came down with it, nor did any of my cats. One kitten Marley ended up having epilepsy, but is still thriving. Catnip Newsletter did an article on FIP several years ago, that stated that it is more genetically linked, than easily spread as many people think. That's why some breeders have FIP in their catteries (Leslie flenner knows ALL about that). It also only affects about 5-10% of cats exposed to the virus. Most are never affected or else I'd have many dead and dying cats here through the years. If anything Topazio's littermates possibly can come down with it, but I wouldn't be too worried about your own furbabies. Jan

Here's hoping and praying that Topazio makes a painless trip to the RB. :( And here's doubly hoping and praying that none of your others have been infected (and this is continuing for Kim's cats).

Oh, Rose, I'm so sorry and I can understand who worried you must be now. :(

My Aysche had the wet form of FIP, and when she has reached her final stage, there was nothing else left but putting her to sleep to make an end to her suffering... it's been so sad.

I can understand you're fearing for your other cats now, but they don't necessarily have to have it! FIP breaks out when the harmless form of the corona virus (which many cats have) mutates into the form that causes FIP. This happens when the cat is exposed to stress or the immune system has broken down due to other diseases such as FeLV. Unfortunately, the tests for FIP are not very reliable since they only show up if there was an infection with a corona-virus or not. They won't tell you if it's the FIP-corona-virus or just another one. (They're easily mutating, one form of them is suspected to cause SARS in humans btw, but not one that is coming from felines, so don't worry about that).
