'Undead' Lobsters May Reanimate When Thawed


BOSTON -- The undead live! No, it's not some Hollywood horror flick -- but a new way to market lobsters.

Connecticut-based Trufresh is showing off its freezing technology at the International Boston Seafood Show.

The company's Barnet Liberman says some of its frozen lobsters come back to life when they're thawed. The crustaceans are flash-frozen in minus 40° Fahrenheit brine.

Liberman says the freezing takes place so quickly there's minimal tissue damage.

His company is looking for investors. But some people aren't convinced. Bonnie Spinazzola of the Atlantic Offshore Lobstermen's Association says the undead lobster might actually be a robo-lobster.

When I was in high school, a kid next to me at the district Science Fair froze his goldfish, but slowly - adding an ice cube at a time to his water, and was able to freeze him and bring him back to life with no apparent ill effects!

a lot of people use freezing as a way to euthanize fish, but I read that they can actually feel themselves freezing, so I know a lot of people chose to put them in clove oil instead because this just makes them fall asleep.

"When cold blooded animals become chilled they cannot move so their death appears peaceful but there is some evidence (I cannot remember where I read this as it was 7 yrs ago when I was researching this subject in regards to humanely killing frogs). However, the animal can feel the pain of ice crystals forming in the body while it freezes. The eugenol method as written above is far more humane since I believe it is an overdose of anesthetic which stops nerve function thus eliminating pain. We switched from freezing to using an overdose of an anesthetic (the active ingredient in Anbesol) for frog euthanasia."

actually if anyone has any proof that fish can indeed feel themselves freezing Id be interested in hearing/seeing it, since this person isnt 100% sure. hopefully I wont need to be using any of these methods in the near future though. my fish are all doing well and I hope to keep them healthy! :O its very distresing to watch a sick-beyond-repair fish suffer for days though. :( I wish I knew about fish euthanasia when amadeus was dying.

I wish I knew about this earlier, I just had to decide what was the best way to put down one of my fish, who some how lost his tail fins and was suffering. :( Now I'm feeling quilty.
