View Full Version : Nebo is sick :(

Since the last thread (Worried about Nebo) I thought he was ok. He'd acted fine all week since he last threw up...he was eating, drinking, eliminating fine.
Well, he's not ok, though I don't know what is wrong. :( My dad called me at work and asked if I had just left Nebo in the basement. I said yes, in the crate in the basement.....but he wasn't in the crate. He'd managed to get out of his crate (I'm not sure how, when I came home the crate had been to the carwash so I didn't get a chance to look and see what could have happened) and made a huge mess over the entire basement. He had diahrea and vomiting in several places, just all over.
I called the vet immediately and rushed him over there. He didn't have a temperature, and nothing looked physically wrong. So they did x-rays and a fecal test. They didn't find anything wrong...$174 later...
He smelled awful so I stopped at Petco and gave him a bath. Poor guy, he had a bath last Wed...a trip to the vet and another bath all in one day!
They gave me this gel and pills to give him every 24 hours. He was such a good boy and swallowed both without a problem. I'm so worried about him though. He's not acting right. Right now he's curled up in a ball covered in a blanket, which is so not Nebo..normally he would never leave a blanket on. He hasn't hardly moved since we came home. :( :(

Amy ~
Has Nebo had any NEW Medications in the last 6 months or so???
Like ProHeart6 - that 6-month Heartworm preventative -
that's the med that made Kim's Kia so sick last year.
Or ANY other medication that he hasn't had since puppy-hood??
Any recent Vaccinations??
FEEL Better SOON, Nebo!!

He had Heartguard last month (Feb 20) but he's been on that once a month since he was a puppy and hasn't had a problem.
His last vaccinations were done in July 2003.
Amy, I know he looks really sick right now, but the good news is that all of his tests were negative.
Keeping a log of what he eats and when he has problems will probably help the vet. You may even want to log his activity level and anything else of interest too.
Stay in touch with the vet and keep a close eye on your boy (I know you will) and I'm sure you'll figure out what is wrong.
Sometimes minor things can look or become serious if not fixed. It is probably something very easy to fix once you pinpoint what it is.
If he gets diarrhea again, you might want to get one more fecal to be on the safe side. Stuff doesn't always show up on the fecal test and some of the parasites are harder to detect.
I will be thinking of you and praying for Nebo, but I'm sure he'll be just fine!

OTHER things to check for...
AntiFreeze - dripping from any vehicles -
just a *taste* can be deadly.
RAT Poison - maybe not at YOUR house - but could
a neighbor have some *out* where Nebo could find it??
Did the Vet consider giving him "Activated Charcoal" to
offset any poisons he may have gotten into??
Prayers Offered for Nebo.

That's a good idea Aly, I'll try to keep track of his activity/ how much he eats.
Phred, I don't think he would have found any anti-freeze/poison...he's always in my house/yard, the only time he is not is when he's with me on a leash. He's rarely in the garage, if he is it's just to walk outside or something, and he hadn't been there recently.
He may have eaten something in our basement. However, there was diahrea all over the crate, so I think he escaped from the crate because he was already sick...not got out of the crate then became sick, if that makes sense.
He acted totally fine this morning before I left for work, he didn't go anywhere unusual...just woke up, went outside to potty for a few minutes then came back in.
I'm wondering if there's a type of allergy that can cause diarrhea. I know you're feeding him high quality food, but I wonder if there's an ingredient in it that he's allergic to? Did you switch recently?

Ooooh-K...
So MEDS aren't the problem...
WHAT was he doing *before* you put him in his crate??
Was he anywhere - even for a minute -
when you didn't KNOW what he was doing??
Getting into something at a Neighbor's house is a possibility -
unless you KNOW he didn't get out of your sight.
Or - how about him having a *Private Stash* hidden somewhere -
Like a  Long Dead Kritter he's *munching on* :p
when you're not looking?
Did the Vet suggest or DO "Blood Tests" ??That might be next if he doesn't improve by morning.
And did you talk to Vet about "Fasting" him -
and then trying Rice + Hamburg or Chicken??
Give him a lil *Ear Skritch* from me!
{{{HUGS}}} to YOU!

I'm wondering if there's a type of allergy that can cause diarrhea. I know you're feeding him high quality food, but I wonder if there's an ingredient in it that he's allergic to? Did you switch recently?
Right now I'm giving him Natural Balance dog food. I don't think this could be a problem though, as he's working on his 2nd 35 lb bag so I didn't switch very recently.
Before Nebo was in the crate he was in the bathroom with me. While I brush my hair, etc. he always lays in the bathroom. He was just in the back by the laundry basket asleep as he usually is. The garbage can was up on the shelf. I'm pretty sure the toilet lid was closed, and even if it wasn't, we don't use those blue cleaners or anything. I never saw him do anything but sleep until I called him.
I do know he was never at the neighbors house. I'm paranoid beyond, he's never, ever allowed to run loose. Believe me, I'd know if Nebo had made an escape, I'd have to go catch him and have a heart attack in the process! I don't think he would have gotten into a dead animal either. I've never found anything like that in my yard, I've never seen an alive squirrel/bunny/etc. in my yard either. Plus he was only outside this morning for 2-5 minutes.
The vet did say to not feed him tonight (which I didn't) and to only give him about 1/4 of the amount of food he usually gets tomorrow. She said if he didn't improve that blood tests would be the next option.
I'm hoping I'm just over-reacting (I'm quite talented at that) and he's fine.

Amy ~
Go and CHECK in the garage and/or where vehicles SIT -
*Look* for any spilled fluids - other than oil.
Only takes a passing "lick" of AntiFreeze to make em REAL sick!
And ask the Folks - just to be SURE -
ANY Rat or other critter or BUG poisons put out??
If no one is *positive* - then search the house & garage.
Those "pet safe" plastic ANT Traps can cause problems IF
they get chewed upon.
Till you get to the bottom of this -
I'd suggest that he goes NOwhere unless ON Leash -
with a Human attached to the other end! ;)

"The vet...

and to only give him about 1/4 of the amount of food he

I'm no Vet -
but RE-read what I posted in your Previous Thread
about how OUR Vet does "upset tummies"...
FIRST Thing is they get *NO* food for 12 - 18 - 24 hours -
and sometimes one of the "Human" stomach remedies.
THEN - after the "Fasting Period" - they do NOT get DOG food -
it's Cooked RICE with either VERY well cooked & drained Hamburger
-or- Boiled Chicken with the rice.
And only a LIL bit - 1/2 CUP to start.
Don't remember WHO had it last - either Shadow (RB :( ) or possibly
Cinder - but we did Rice & Hamburg for at LEAST 3-4 days
before we went back to Dawg Krunchies.
ASK the Vet about trying "something" other than his regular food.

Amy, I'm glad to hear that Nebo is feeling better.
Over react? Sorry, I'm the queen, take a back seat.
It never ceased to amaze and frighten me, how fast Cody was at grabbing something on his walks. His tummy would get upset, maybe the next day or day after, so I always had to think back.
My vet said that dogs (and cats) can get viruses too. It was something that had never occured to me.
Klo's not as bad, and it's way easier to get something out of her mouth. But I always, always panic.
Speaking of anti-freeze..I read in Dog Watch that those thick, puffy ski gloves have antifreeze in them. And are dangerous if torn or even pin-holed. Not that Nebo did that, but Phred's comment on that, reminded me.
Kiss the big galoot for me and tell him no more surprises and worries for his mommy.

Poor Nebo. :( Did Nebo eat today? If so, did he eat on his own, or was he enticed in any way? Whenever anyone's kid has tummy problems, I always think of pancreatitis. Does he seem unhappy and/or distressed? Any signs of pain? I know you've had it before, so you know about it, but it always comes to mind with vomiting and diarrhea in an otherwise healthy young dog.
Chester will go along eating and pooping fine and then suddenly it all goes bad and he's having diarrhea and in pain and won't eat.
Just a thought.
Hope he feels better soon and if he doesn’t want to eat, don’t dress his food up. Like the vet told me, they know when it’s not a good time for them to eat. I know you know it can be dangerous to take in any food if he does have pancreatitis.

Poor Nebo!! I hope he is feeling better soon :(
About this time last year, Sadie got diarrhea very badly (for about 2-3days)...I can't remember if she was vomitting or not. Anyway, our vet did two different fecal exams: the regular float they do for parasites and a more through test that showed she had Clostridium. It is a bacterial infection of the intestines and was very easy to treat with an anitbiotic.
I knew you have posted a few other threads that Nebo did not seem himself....how long as it been going on? Maybe try and think back to then ( a week or so)....was there anything, anytime he could have gotten into? At the dog park? Agility class? Any toys torn up or missing that could have caused an obstruction?
Don't worry about overreacting! We do that here too!!! Sadie andCincy both havebeen tot he ER vet inthe middle of the night more then once!

Poor Nebo. :( Also, poor you, I know how worried you must be.
You have had some excellent suggestions and advice from everyone and I can't think of anything to add .... except maybe - a long shot - could there be any connection with him liking to chew/eat tree branches and stuff? Maybe something in the sap?
Keeping you both be in my thoughts and prayers.

Amy I am so sorry to read this! I hope by the time you return to this thread you will have some better news to report. Please don't for one minute think you are over-reacting! You know Nebo and how he normally acts and sometimes, even without the other bodily things like vomiting and diarrhea going on, that sends out quite a strong signal to us that all is not well. :( The advice here has been excellent and I only have one thing to suggest. Recently Rachel had some problems with Hannah because she ate some bunny poop. I know Bella enjoys bunny poop at times :o and she can get some of down before I even realize she has found it. (((Hugs))) to you and Nebo.

Nebo is trying to drive me insane!
He acts totally FINE this morning. He's been running around, playing...acting like normal Nebo. He doesn't act sick or in pain at all. I don't think he has any sort of an obstruction (unless it was really, really tiny?) because she took x-rays and everything looked normal.
The medicine that is gel is for the diahrea and the pills are an anti-biotic. I'm not sure of the specific names but I can check.
I asked the vet when and what I should feed him, and she said to feed him what he normally eats. I gave him 1/2 cup of regular dry dog food, nothing added, and he ate it like he was hungry. I have tried the hamburger and rice thing, I did that when he was a puppy and had diahrea. I also gave him some sort of over the counter medicine made for that, I probably still have some. I'm going to try what the vet told me to do first though.
It's been several hours since then and he still acts fine...
I need to go outside and check if he still has diahrea. He's only been outside to potty once this morning but I was in my pajamas, no shoes and there's snow outside!

Sound like Nemo could go outside and eat some grass. Grass makes a dog feel better and soothes their stomach. Just make sure it hasn't been chemically treated. It is also a sign of illness if they start eating ALOT of grass. So keep an eye out. Next time You suspect Nemo has swallowed something Give him a Teaspoon of Hydrogen Perioxide. (Yes the foaming antiseptic stuff you buy for scrapes). This will make him throw up in about 10 minutes. Can give him/her up to 2 teaspoons if larger animal. I had to use it on my dog because he ate my Chocolate Chip cookies while I was outside talking to a neighbor. It took some time but it worked. He did not want to throw up and that is what took so long. He hates to be sick. Good luck!!!

I'm a little late on this post but... Grizz was sick about 3 weeks ago. He had exactly what Nebo had/has. Grizz was sick for about a week and he made messes all over the house. My boyfriend’s mom fed him boiled meat and rice to settle his stomach, and he was better. It's probably just doggy flu. I remember Angie had diarrhea for about a week once. Just watch Nebo to make sure he doesn't get dehydrated.
