It stand for Love Is Evil. LOL. I joined because I'm alone this Valentine's Day, and so shall sink in self pity and pretend that I don't need love. ;)

And when you spell love backwards, it's "evol." How creepy is that? Hehe.

to add to that! !! The word "evil" can be spelled using some of the letters in Valentine!!

ROFLOL!!! What have I and Liana started? Didn't know we had so many members!! :D

LIE is pretty much an Anti-Valentine's Day "club"... or cult haha.
Here's a website that describes it more in detail...
http://www.miccah.com/xiaoxin/lie.htm

All you pretty much have to do is be against V-Day and that stuff, and wear black on Valentine's Day if you have any black clothes...

Also another "creepy" thing to add... The day before V-Day is Friday the 13th. :p

Gee, I also feel that way about Valentine's day! People "in love" spend fortunes on chocolates, roses and dinner. I'll take that $75 and use it for something I really need in lieu of 12 roses that'll die within a week, thank you. Besides... Hershey's chocolate is best anyway, so gimme 50 cents and I'll buy a bar!

But I WILL be wearing my black socks with glittery red lips on them;)

Side note: you haven't had Hershey's chooclate until its right from the factory! YUMMM! We live less than hour from there and are always in Hershey because thats where my daughter plays soccer... so I just happen to always need to "stop by Chocolate World.":D

I don't like how it's shoved down everyone's throat everywhere you go, but all holidays are becoming that way, so I just ignore it.

One year an old boyfriend and I totally forgot it was Valentines Day and decided to go out to dinner... when we got to the restaurant, there were women sitting in the lobby with their arms full of balloons, flowers, stuffed bears, ect. We just stood there stunned. Both of us had forgotten. We laughed, went home, made dinner and watched a movie.

Andy and I are thinking of going to the Detroit Institute of Arts with another couple this year. :)

While I totally don't agree with the "love is evil" theme, I too will be alone on Feb 14th. I have decided to remain single by choice. Valentine's Day used to really bug me but the older I get, the more I ignore all the commericalism. To me it's just another day the stores get to push up the price of roses and make the almighty buck.

However, I do send a card to my Mom and two of my best friends because I love them dearly.

I think Valentine's Day would be so much nicer if it was looked at as a celebration of love, not focusing on lovers or couples, but love overall, between family, friends, children, pets, and so on.

I remember how it used to make me feel in high school, when all the popular girls were being called to the office to pick up bouquets and balloons and candy and so on. I felt so alone and unloved. That is what V-day seems to induce for the single person. The commercial world has promoted that, implying that your love equals how extravagent a gift you get for your partner.

It's sad though, the true meaning of most holidays tends to become lost nowdays by commercialism of them.

Talk about needing to wake up and smell the roses?

Since when was Valentines day ONLY about sexual relationships? Not in my family, nor amongst my friends either. I look at it as an opportunity (not that you need one) to express your love- romantic and non romantic to those you love!

I see it as a day to be smarmy and sappy, without consequence.

Since chances are that we won't be changing the world's perception of Valentine's day anytime soon, why not change your orientation to it?

I'm with Cataholic on this one! When I was a kid my mother would always give me a gift on Valentine's Day ....and it was always something pink or red. Sappy...I suppose....but a nice memory....and I always send a card to my parents!

I spent many a Valentine's Day without a date. So? I'll never be a mother but that doesn't mean I think Mother's Day is stupid!

I don't hate it because I think its associated only with a couple's relationship...............I just don't think its neccessary because those who you love should know you love them every day.......not just once a year. :o I don't think you need a *day* for that.

Same with mother's day, and father's day. I think my parents should know that I love them everyday, not just on those particular days. But of course, that's just me. :p

It's supposed to be a celebration of that love, like birthdays are a celebration of your birth. Of course I know I'm loved and am special but I still enjoy birthday cards and being made to feel extra special sometimes :).

I don't like the commercialism of days like Valentine's day or Mother's Day etc., but I like the original ideas and intent behind them.

I do hate the couple aspect of it. For those of us that would like to be part of a couple, it just makes you feel bad for not having someone special. Especially when you have to work and someone else on your shift gets flowers. Makes you feel just wonderful. One year, Duke gave me a valentine. Now that was a special one.

Personally, I don't care for Valentine's Day.

Not because it's "lovey dovey", and I don't have a human companion to share it with, but because I really see no point in it.

Yeah ok, it was cute to celebrate in 5th grade, as well as Easter, Mom's Day, Dad's day, St Patties day... but really it's just another day anymore.

Although, I think this "L.I.E" stuff is a bit stupid (No offense), just MHO. Especially since most of you are still in your teens. :p

When I was single, A bunch of us formed an informal group called "Pathetically Single" and would all get dolled up and meet up for dinner on Valentaine's day. We'd give each other balloons and trade goofy gifts and then head out dancing.

One year we spied on our friend's date with the woman that is now his wife... we were wearing all black and stalking through the bushes outside his house! Of course he caught on, but it was all in fun!

I miss those Valentine's Days more than you'd ever know! Sure, my husband is great, but there's a high you get from being with your friends, all comiserating together!

Well, since you recognize you are alive everyday, should you stop celebrating your birthday?

We celebrate Independence Day, even though every knows the significance of July 4, Christmas, even though most people recognize the symbolism of Christ's Birthday..

AND, since when do we become too 'old' to celebrate holidays? It is a rememberance, a 'celebration', an honoring, whatever you want to call it. AND, if some people need an excuse to show their love (on any day), so what? I hope I am never too old to enjoy any holiday. For my family, it is an excuse to get together, a reason to call, a reason to send a card, when we might not otherwise. No one loves anyone any less if something doesn't happen, but, it is NICE! It feels GOOD! Enjoy it.

And, even if I am not knee deep in a relationship, it makes me feel so good to see my friend, my collegue, my coworker, or a stranger on the street, for that matter, experience happiness in the form of flowers at work, candy, a card, a hug, whatever. My social status isn't lessened because they are getting something I am not (and, NO, I am not referring to that..he he he).

It is all a matter of changing your perspective on it.

Okay well first off I believe that love can be beautiful if it is real love. I only "joined" this for fun and yes it is pretty stupid but it is just for fun. I don't like the way people make it a point that Valentines' Day is only for couples. On Valentine's Day my parents usually gets us something and we make something for them. And this Valentine's Day, we celebrate 1 year and 4 months with Mickey. How great is that. :D I just "joined" out of pure fun. I don't think Love is Evil and I was so shocked when I found out that there was an actual website and cult called L.I.E. with people actually against love.

Just wanted to clear out "my membership" ;)

Good point, Cataholic. You do need a day to really celebrate love. But as always, it has been twisted around into some commercial day to buy things. That I don't agree with.

You mean from the time he was cannonized as a saint? I am not sure you are completely correct....I think St. Valentine's history is a little more involved than being about boyfriends/girlfriends.

However, I am not Catholic (not even a lapsed one!), so maybe one of our religously educated will chime in?

http://www.pictureframes.co.uk/pages/saint_valentine.htm

I think you will see there has always been a steady mix of 'love' in the history...both romantic and non-romantic. St. Valentine, on his death's bed left a note...and it is that note leaving that evolved into the traditional valentine cards.....

I sure didn't know about the web site or anything and I'm certainly not that much against it! And, I wasn't referring to social status when I was talking about gifts at work, I was referring as to how I felt when it happened. I couldn't care less about my social status at work. I'm not that type of person. But it makes we s.a.d. people a little blah to know that we don't have that someone special to enjoy the day with. Hope that explains it better.

I don't think you ever get too old to celebrate a holiday. Holidays aren't for children..........they're for everyone. Its just this particular holiday that doesn't mean much to me. It doesn't make any sense to me. It just doesn't. Perhaps it is because I've always seen it as a *couple's day*, even though I know its used to celebrate your love for anyone as well.........but that is just how the day is celebrated by so many. Maybe not in your family, but around here, everyone sees it as a bf/gf day, and personally, I don't even see bf/gf's as a relationship. For me, V-Day is just any other day. I don't even remember it. Heck I don't even remember my birthday. My mom does. :o I forget it. Wierd? Definitely. But that's me! LOL!

But then again, this really isn't a serious issue, and definitely isn't one to be argued upon, so let's all just agree to disagree. We all have our own views, and that is fine. Right Catapault? ;) He he he.

Love is a many splender thing, love lifts up where we belong, all we need is love...or so I've heard ;) :D

Honestly when I was younger, I enjoyed Valentines day mainly because my parents would give me candy and such. As I got odler like High school and just out of high school, I couldn't stand it. I thought it was the lamest day of the year. Now however it's a day, just another day.

Yes Valentines day represents love, but really why should we all just use the one day of the year to show someone how we care about them? If I want chocolate or something, I'll go out and buy it, if I want flowers (which I don't really enjoy, not a flower type person) I'll go and look at a garden, and if I want to tell someone that I love them well dag nab it I'll do it when ever I want.

I will however be spending Valentines day with the goonies, which is a darn good way to spend a day if you ask me.

For those of you who said Valentine's Day should be focused on family and spending time with them and being nice to them and giving them gifts and stuff because you love them instead of the whole boyfriend/girlfriend relationship thing... shouldn't you do that every day anyway? Show appreciation to your family members? You don't need a special day dedicated to spending time with family! :p

Although, I think this "L.I.E" stuff is a bit stupid (No offense), just MHO. Especially since most of you are still in your teens.
Are you calling us immature? Have you ever been in a relationship? I've had negative experiences with relationships so I have a reason to be against the whole "love" thing. I really don't appreciate you calling something I started just for fun "stupid". I did it to start a group with other singles... to show people who are single that they're not the only ones, and so we can share our experiences and help each other deal with them and stuff. In all honesty I have to agree. I'm not saying that YOU are immature, but I think the whole thing is rather silly. I remember that when I was in high school I thought I knew everything about love because I had been in a few relationships, but my views and opinions have changed now that I am older. I'm single and believe me I've had my share of bad relationships, but that doesn't mean I think love is evil. I know that when the time is right, and I am ready I will find that special person. But until then, I'm going to enjoy my single life.

I don't believe ALL love is evil.. I know that there are people that are truly in love, and I think that's wonderful! And the relationships I was talking wasn't JUST about me... It was about my friends too... and I have friends of many ages. I also come from a sort of dysfunctional family... My mom divorced when I was 3, re-married when I was 4 or 5, and my step-dad's an alcoholic. I have very valid reasons for starting this club lol. But like I said, if you're lucky enough to have found someone great that you know you'll end up spending the rest of your life with, that's wonderful and you're very lucky! And like I said before, this isn't a completely serious club lol, it's supposed to be fun, and so we can share experiences and whatnot. :)

It's kinda like I said earlier and as Cataholic put it. It's nice to sometimes have a day set aside to celebrate specific things, it's not saying we should only show love once a year on Valentine's Day :p. A lot of us here celebrate birthdays for those we love and it doesn't mean we only appreciate them on that day. Having an actual day set aside to celebrate something just means we especially gather and celebrate it as a community, at least I think that is the idea behind holidays. We also don't NEED Thanksgiving or Halloween or St. Patrick's day etc etc. Those days all mean something different to different individuals, but we share in common recognizing it as a community and as a society on that particular day.

Well, that was my attempt at explaining how I see it. Not sure whether it got my point across or not. :p.

I also understand feeling down on some holidays because of feeling lonely or feeling left out too, but that also doesn't make the holiday stupid or pointless, that's all I'm saying :)

Cataholic, Edwina's Secretary, and K9Soul took the words out of my mouth. :) I don't go all out for V-Day, but I do like to buy cards for my family and friends. Cards from 'the dog' or 'the cat' are especially fun. :D

My mom still does this! :D Every year I get a little gift that's red or pink and some candy. :)

I agree micki! One year, I had an especially cute card and a heart shaped tin from Duke. Was very nice.

That is how we celebrate Valentines Day. This year we are having Dylan "sign" Valentines cards for family and friends. :D I enjoy the time spent with family better than as a couple. Of course Dan and I will do something together, maybe cards of something dumb like that, but we are also spending the day going to his sisters basketball game. She is on the Cougar's basketball team and they will be playing the Duck's in Corvallis. So instead of celebrating all alone, the family will be celebrating Stephanie's game instead. :)

I also send things to my family. This year I am having a bouquet of flowers sent to my mother in California. I order them online, and since I can't be there in person, I will have them delivered to her door. :) I also bought my sister a really cute teddy bear with Hershey's kisses and the bear is wearing a leopard print dress. My sis LOVES leopard print!

I will be making something for Dan with Dylan, maybe give him a cute photo of the two of us or something like that. So it's not all about couples, it's more just about love, and the meaning of celebrating what you have. :)

Love is great! You just need to find it, and the right kind! Being in love is one of the most beautiful feelings you ever get to experience, and when you do, gosh, it's just undescribable. I too used to be single all the Valentines Days, but who cares? Celebrate your singleness! Because one day, you won't be single anymore. You have your freedom now, enjoy it!

Those that have found love, consider yourself extremely lucky! I never dreamed back in '93 that this is the way I'd be now. So, life's experiences do determine our views on this touchy day. I'll be celebrating my dog love(for which I'd never trade for a man) this valentine's.

Yes, I have. Is it any of your business? No.

As I stated, I meant no offense.

And how come you blow up on me when I call it stupid yet when others did you said nothing?

Excuse me, If stating my opinion is immature, then hell, i'm immature. I never claimed to be mature.

And, if it's not serious, then why does it matter if I call it stupid or not?

Sorry, from the way you worded it, it sounded like you implied it. And I get offended very easily. I'm pretty sure you'd be offended too if I said something you made is stupid. And the reason I "blew up" on you was because you were the only person that I saw that said it in such a rude way... Other people were a lot more respectful about it. You just straight-out said it's stupid. Next time can you please keep negative things to yourself unless you can figure out a nicer way to say it? Sort of like from the children's movie, Bambi, "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all." That's all I ask... Thanks

As I said, NO OFFENSE.

Next time, read before blowing up. I meant no offense, meaning you shouldn't be offended. And as I said, i'm sorry you were.

If you want to think something I make is stupid -- then go straight ahead. It's your opinion and I can/would/could respect that.

Others stated it the same as me, but when I said it, you blew up at me and just me. Even those who did say it the same way wondered why you chose just me to blow up on. :p

Again, I meant NO OFFENSE.

I like Valentine's Day. :)

No, I don't go all out but I look at it as a day to remind your loved ones how much you appreciate them. Yes of course you should tell them every day but let's face it, we don't always have the time or energy to do that.

I like doing nice things for people I love and Valentine's Day is just another reminder to do so, IMHO.

Celebrating Valentines day has only been in NZ for around five years , so its a new experience for most of us,so in my younger days there was no such celebration.

Hubby and I celebrate it, but we donot go overboard, I have a card and we are going to the movies thats it, but its the quality time alone that we will have that is important and special, We don't need a certain day set aside to celebrate our love for one another, infact our anniversary means way more to me than some over-commercialised day.
I would like to share the words on my card with you.
A VALENTINE POEM FOR MY HUSBAND

For the man who took me as his bride,
whose kisses leave me starry-eyed,
who understands my every mood,
Whose patience rarely comes unglued,
The man who knows I'm not a saint,
(and lets me know he's glad I ain't).
Who shares my secret dreams and wishes,
And (sometimes) helps me do the dishes,
The man I fuss at now and then,
But love to make up with again.
My faithful friend and sympathiser,
My handyman and big supriser,
The one who makes my life complete,
Who warms my heart,
and my cold,cold feet,
'The man I love the whole year through,
THE WORLD'S BEST HUSBAND HONEY YOU.
These words really describe how I feel about my hubby and are so true. hope you don't mind me sharing.:)

P.S. Even though I think Valentines day is not really necessary and people just go over the top sometimes, its up to each individual what they do, and I respect that, and besides I am really just a hopeless Romantic at heart, Hubby is not really the Romantic type, but he will celebrate it because he knows it's something I like to do.(besides I have all those young year's I missed out to make up for) with the love of my life.

A thought for those of you who are alone, Please donot feel sad, it really is just another day, I Know its difficult, when it surrounds you and its in your face every year on the 14th, but take a positive attitude and remember its just an over-commercialised day, at least you can save some bucks he he.

I know you are thinking you are a fine one to speak, but I spent ten years of my life without a partner, and though valentines day was not celebrated, I felt alone many times, just going to the park with my son and seeing couples together, used to pull at my heart strings, so I know how you are feeling.

Just enjoy the love of your pets, friends, families, and keep your spirits up, let the day pass without feeling too bad, life is good and valentines day is really insignificant in comparison.:) Cheers everyone and my love to all of you who are alone or feeling blue.

First I wish to say dis-regard my previous threads, Valentines Day is just a crock, all it has done is upset me and make me feel annoyed with my husband, every year for three years I have religiously bought him a card, and yes you guessed it, I have never received one back, he is so slack and un-romantic, I just feel disappointed.

I have decided not to celebrate it anymore, and take my own advice and treat it as just another day, We had agreed not to buy presents and go to the movies instead, but I thought he would have least got me a card, but no, I should have known better.

So here I am on Valentines day feeling hurt, so whats the point,it just verifys what I knew about my husband all along, he is thoughtless sometimes.

Oh well I sure hope you all have a better day than me, time to move on and forget about it all.:)

Although that is unfortunate, I think it's your husband to blame rather than the day.

Well Carole, that just sucks. Men can be thoughtless and inconsiderate some times, but they’re only human. I’m thoughless and inconsiderate about holidays, birthdays and anniversaries, too. My husband is the one who always remembers and gets me something nice. I always forget and/or get him some crappy, cheesy gift.

Chin up, and Happy V-Day. You know your furkids will always be there, no matter what and they never hurt your feelings. :)

02-13-2004, 03:33 PM
Kayann you are right, and Micki yep those furbabies will always be there for me no matter what the lil darlins, but hey Micki maybe you should make more effort to try and remember special events, because being on the other end of it, hurts, when you are forgotten.(just some friendly -well meant advice )

Anyways I am over it now, life goes on.:) it is not that big of a deal!!!;)

I know, Carole. I try, I really do. I just don't remember, because it's not important to me to recieve things on those special days and I forget that it's important to him. I know I love him and I show it on many ways throughout theweek, month, & year.

I've even gone so far as to put reminders in Outlook, since we use that at work. After your post I went back and moved my reminders up by a week, so that I can hopefully get out early and get him a nice gift instead of the last minute Walgreen's gifts.

Good on you Micki, thats the spirit, I know my husband show's me too that he loves me, but it still hurts when they seem so thoughtless, and you are the one always being the thoughtful ,romantic one, so keep trying, you will get there in the end, and he will be sooo....suprised. I bet he will appreciate, just being thought of as well., it is the thought that counts in most cases.,.is for me anyhow. cheers.:)

yeah, but my problem isn't being single or anything (i'm only 14) but it's just some of the mean things peole do to other peole on valentines day. they might forge tit in a day or two but it leaves a permenant scar on the other person...BTW i'm not talking about myself;)
