pharoah hounds

I'm looking at getting a dog in the next year or so, and, am very intrigued by the pharoah hound. I'm just curious if there's anyone in here that can give me any firsthand information about the kind of pet and friend they make. I've been researching several breeds online, but, would like to hear actual people's opinions. I'm also curious about Doberman Pinschers and Affenpinschers. Any opinions would be wonderful! Thanks!

I´m not sure about pharaoh hounds, but I´ve heard that dobies are not recommended for people-beginners (I mean if this dog will be your first dog) ....

Well, I've owned dogs before and helped others with different breeds. I've read a lot and attended obedience classes and puppy classes and dog shows. I'm not necessarily aching to have a dog that will be challenging, but, I'm not against it either. I know one of the most difficult breeds to train is a siberian husky, because they are so smart with attention spans like a two year old, and, I trained my roommates husky, Nikolai. I didn't teach him flyball or agility or anything, but, he did basic commands and walked well on lead. I'm not a pushover, and, I know all about being the alpha dog, etc. I'm ready for whatever challenge is before me, regardless of the breed. :)

I don't have a Pharoah hound but I have looked in to them because they are a breed that I would kind of like to consider owning in the future. You do have to take in consideration with them that they are sight hounds and will most likely have the urge to chase. Also they are a rare breed in North America with no breeders at all in the Canada and only a handful in the states.

From what I've seen of dobermans they can be a good breed as long as you get one from a good breeder and you take the time to socialize and train them.

Hey, Thanks, Crikit. Yeah, I knew they like to run. :) My old roommate's husky was never allowed off leash unless it was a completely secure area (like a dog park), so, I'd be prepared for a dog that I couldn't let go like that. I believe there is a breeder in College Station here in Texas, and, it's about a four hour drive, but, that would be ok. I really want to check out a few different breeders and breeds before I consider getting a dog. Dobermans have always interested me and I love the loyalty and grace of the breed. I also won't crop the ears or dock the tail if I get one. Anyway....thanks again for the info. :)

The Pharaoh Hound Dog Breed


Other Name: Kelb Tal-Fenek

Description: Pharaoh Hounds are sleek and slender sight hounds. They are very athletic with a long slim muzzle. Their ears are large and stand erect, they have a long arched neck and a long whip-like tail.

Country of Origin: Egypt

Height: Dogs 23-25 inches (59-63 cm.) Bitches 21-24 inches (53-61 cm.)

Weight: 45-55 pounds (20-25 kg.)

Colors: Pharoah Hounds come in red or tan, with symmetrically placed white markings.

Coat: An average shedder, the Pharoah Hound has no doggie smell and should only be brushed as required.

Temperament: Pharoah Hounds are well behaved and very peaceful indoors. They are independent, loyal, and love children. They may be somewhat reserved with strangers. Pharoah Hounds 'blush' when they get excited, their nose and ears turn a deep rose color. Pharoah Hounds love to chase things and should not be trusted with rabbits, cats or other small non-canine creatures.

Health Concerns: Generally healthy, the Pharoah Hound is sensitive to medicines and insecticides.

Life Expectancy: About 11-14 years.

Living Environment: Pharaoh Hounds have strong natural hunting instincts and should therefore be kept in a yard with a very high fence, otherwise they could jump over it. They are excellent dogs to run alongside a bicycle. Pharoah Hounds require soft bedding to sleep and prefer to sleep with their families. Pharoah Hounds are sight hounds and will chase small animals so should only be allowed off their leash in a safe enclosed space.

Thanks! I wonder if they were socialised properly and from a young age, if they could be kept in a household with a cat. Hmmm.... and, that comment about color doesn't seem accurate. I thought they came in black with tan and white markings, too. Kinda like a Bernese or Swiss Mountain Dog or Cavalier King Charles Spaniel......interesting....although, it's not that important, because if I got one, I'd get red and white. :)

Pharoah hounds are never black and tan, you can get dobi's in black and tan but never a pharoah hound. If it's any other color then a shade of red or tan then it isn't a pharoah hound. Even the white that they have is just a patch or two on the chest and feet, other then that it's one color all over.

As far as living with a cat, it's hard to say, I know that they are capable of living with dogs that are smaller then them but I'm not sure about a cat.

Hey, my bad. i was thinking basenjis. :) But, I didn't mean black and tan like a doberman, I meant the markings like a bernese mountain dog or something. But, yeah, I was thinking basenjis. :)
