People do this all the time. I would imagine it takes more than a few mistakes for it to cause any effect. But yes, males are not supposed to have oranges. Some people say the fruit is OK but it's just the rind that is bad, but I wouldn't chance giving them the fruit either. In fact, I rarely give it to my doe's either because I don't really like oranges. Too acidic. Just don't give them anymore. Simple as that. ;)
Which site were you on that said it was OK for males? That must have been a typo.

Yep not good. Never do it again! It can cause cancer.
That is why it is a good idea to read multiple sites before acting off of one...that way you get a better idea of good and bad stuff.

I give mine a bit of orange for a treat sometimes (not very often as I don't eat oranges much). As far as scientists can tell, the D-limonene (causes kidney cancer in male rats) is only in the rind. Either way, a bit as a treat can't hurt. I read that it would take approximatly two Litres of orange juice in a month to cause cancer.

Anything causes cancer in high enough quantities, I wouldn't worry about a little bit of orange. :) I gave my girls avocado before I learned that it was one of the "forbidden" foods. I have always heard it as male ratties shouldn't have citrus, but I know a few people who have given their boy rats oranges without troubles.

Actually the D-limonene in the orange juice doesn't have any affect on mice. ;)

Exactly. I will NEVER not give my rats Avocado. In fact it's one of the miracle workers for abused and neglected rats who are too sick to eat or need to add weight in a short amount of time.
