View Full Version : Cami's Awfully Sick! :(

Well, my mom picked me up from school yesterday, with cami as usual.. It smelled sooo funny in the car.. She actually smelled like a filthy dog.. And thats not ever like cami.. She usually smells like... my house.. lol.. But anyway, So my mom told me she was throwing up and had bad diarrhea.. When i got home she threw up alot, and i was up till about 11:30 helping my mom clean up throw up, and diarrhea, ect.. So, my mom took her to the emergency, because we didnt know what was wrong, and she is still there this morning.. I did feed her raw egg, which supposedly is good for their coat, but the vet said it isn't good at all for them, that it has Sallmenella (sp).. I was crying all yesterday because when she would throw up, you know how it looks like someones just taking a pump and pumping it out? Thats how she looked, she just looked so helpless! :( Anyway, I just wanted to let you all know..
*I guess i should have posted this in dog general.. :o *

Poor Cami! I hope she gets better soon.
Prayers are on the way for sweet Cami. I know it is hard to be apart from her but she is getting the care she needs right now.
I'm sure the egg or something else unsettled her stomach and she will be just fine. She is probably getting hydrated with fluids right now and will probably be able to come home by this evening.
You try to get some rest until your baby is back home.

I hope Cami get well really soon, and gets back into your arms fast. How did they say she was doing?
Has she stopped throwing up yet? I was just wondering, did they run any test on her? I just can't believe an egg would do that! Never heard of that, but you learn something new everyday.
I will be thinking of both you and Cami, please keep us posted.

**update**
Well, heres the not so good update, she is sick.. Really, really, really sick.. :( Im really worried because they said at first they said it was parasites. That would have been best because it's easily cured, but it's not parasites, they think it's gastroid.. something.. I really dont know the name of it.. Anyway, she has to stay for about 2 or 3 more days, because she is dehydrated, so they have to put two days worth of iv's in her, the bill is going to be over 1000 dollars, my mom is freaking, because she said she was just about to pay off almost everything and here comes 1000 dollars.. So my mom said she doesnt know how she is going to pay for it.. The vets said they weren't sure if she was going to make it or not.. :( My mom asked if maybe she could give 500 this week 500 the next, but they said no, so now we have to find someway to make up 1000 dollars.. But we will figure it out, i dont know what will happen if we dont, but i just hope she will be okay.. So everyone please pray for her, and hope she will be okay, because i dont know if she will and pettalk prayers are always the best..

I don't know if that is worse than Parvo, but Dana my Rottweiler got Parvo when she was about 4 months old. She had been given all her shots, so I thought she was safe. When she started throwing up and had diarhea, I could not figure out for the life of me what was wrong. So I started researching Parvo on the internet and it said that her breed was really susceptiable to Parvo. I kept thinking no that couldn't be what was wrong. I took her to the vet over here and he comfirmed my worst fears. She did indeed have Parvo. He wanted to keep her in the hospital for 2 or 3 days and charge me around 600 dollars, I just didn't have it. So I told him that he would just have to give me her medicine and let me treat her at home.
He gave her a shot before we left for the nausea and vomiting and told me not to give her another until the next morning. So I took her home with two extra shots for the vomiting, and some kind of stuff to mix and pour down her to keep her from getting dehydrated.
When I got her home I set her little hospital room up in my living room, and put me a mattress on the floor and stayed up with her for the next two nights. But that night she was still vomiting so I went ahead and gave her another shot. I got up just every few minutes and would put a syringe of the liquid down her throat. She was better by the next morning, even wanted to eat something, though I didn't give her anything but the liquid that day. But she got better. My point is Dana was very sick, and Cami is very sick, so don't you lose hope with Cami!! Cami has a vet caring for her so she is in the best of care, the very best of care.
I will keep her in my prayers, and I know everybody here are praying like crazy for you and your sweet Cami. Wouldn't hurt to pray for your mom too. I know this has to be hard on her too. Mother don't like to see their little girls hurting and worrying, I know that for a fact.
Willie
aww so sorry, but I highly doubt the egg had ANYTHING to with it, unless its bad when when mixed with kibble  my dogs get at least 2 raw eggs every single day. anyway prayers and white light and cami gets better
a word of advice, many vets lie to get more money, this recently happend to happys breeder. the vet told her that her dog had cancer, so she had done thousands of dollers worth of tests, etc.. took him to another vet only to find out there was not 1 single trace of cancer, the dogs leg near his shoulder was broken. dont just take one vets word for it, spirit was nealy PTS because of the so called "cancer" this vet STILL insists that there is cancer, the lady who owns the dog is a professinal nurse by the way she is not stupid and know what everything in the system is, and what things mean. I would be very wary of the vet just in case, and get a second opinion.

Oh Amber I'm so sorry to hear about Cami! Please know that Cami, you and your family will be in prayers tonight. Hopefully the vet can come up with some good news soon. Most vets are really great at letting clients pay off their bills with installments, I'm surprised your's said no.
Tray does have a point about vets. Is it possible for a second opinion or is it too late??

01-07-2004, 05:13 PM
Im not too sure, i think they want to keep her.. Im just too afraid to move her and something will happen, and i will regret taking her somewhere else..
Thanks for your kind words everyone, i really hope they work.. Im just so scared.. :(
Miracles do happen. I just went through this with my foster baby Nakita. The vets even said she had a poor chance of survival but she made it. I know it was the love she received that pulled her through the ordeal, so if you are able to visit Cami, I would go do that as often as you can. Their mental health is almost as important as their physical health.
Prayers are still coming.

Do you know if he is still running test on Cami?
I went through the same thing, when Jojo was sick with Pancratitus. I thought she was dead. She was put on an I.V as soon as we got her To his office. Jojo was there for almost a week. She made it and is fine now. I still have to watch her diet.
He let us pay weekly for a month on her bill.
I know you are afraid for cami. I would give you a hug if I could. Please keep us updated.

Well, here is an update for you guys..
Cinder, Smoke, you made me cry, usually all of your prayers do, thank you so much for that prayer.. Cami is showing little progress to the medicene that the doctors have given her.. The doctor says, she isnt responding as fast as he wants her too, he said that she has a 95% chance of making it, unless her organs fail to work, but who knows what could happen, he said if he gives too much fluid from the iv's her lungs could fill up with water, and that would be a problem, but they have to fill her up with as much as possible, because she cant drink anything without bringing it back up.. Ahh, my head is like blocked right now, but i will be back with some more things that i remember lol..
It's good that she is doing better, Amber. :) Thanks for the update. Keep praying, guys!!

*New update*
The vets called us and told us that they gave cami some ice cubes, and she was soo thirsty and sucked them all up! Then they waited, nothing happened, they gave her some water, she was also soo thirsty, so they waited......... Nothing happened.. Now they just gave her food, and so far she has held it down, in the morning they will call to let us know if she threw up, if not she will get more food, and can be sent home tommorow night, but on a strict diet.. The reason she was having bloody Diarrhea was because the tissues from her stomach were tearing.. Thats not happening anymore..
Wow, pettalk prayers have alot of power! ;) :D Thanks guys! We love ya, and now my mom really knows that the people on pettalk are really sweet, and she appriciates you much more, she said all the kind words brought her to tears..

:o Sorry guys, i completley forgot about this thread :o
Well, Cami is doing just fine! :D She was diagnosised with Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis, severe case.. Wow, try saying that one 5 times! ;) :p the diagnosis of HGE is one of exclusion, meaning other possible causes of bloody vomiting and/or bloody diarrhea must first be considered. Some of these possible causes include ulcers, trauma, gastrointestinal tumors or obstruction, foreign bodies, infectious diseases, and coagulation disorders.evaluation of these other causes might require such tests as a complete blood count, biochemical analysis of the blood, urinalysis, x-rays, coagulation tests, fecal evaluation ultrasound or endoscopic (fiberoptic) evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract. Because the costs of all these tests could be significant, it is sometimes prudent to treat the dog for a few days with supportive care to see if the signs resolve. More details on this are given below.hge is most common in small breeds of dogs. The blood count of affected dogs is frequently characterized by an elevated hematocrit (red blood cell count). Most normal dogs have hematocrits of 37-55%, while dogs with HGE may have hematocrits well above 60%. The elevated hematocrit provides the veterinarian with an important clue that the dog may have HGE.dogs with HGE will appear profoundly ill and, if left untreated, may die. In most cases, the disorder appears to run its course in a few days if the animal is given appropriate supportive care. Intravenous fluid therapy provides the cornerstone of therapy for HGE. Fluids given under the skin are not considered adequate to meet the significant fluid requirements of most dogs with HGE.if intravenous fluid therapy is not given, the dog's red blood count will continue to elevate due to dehydration. Eventually, the blood may become so thick that it flows very slowly through the blood vessels. In this situation, the dog is a prime candidate for a potentially fatal clotting disorder called disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Once DIC has begun, it is often irreversible and may result in death.

Congratulations on your Cami doing better! I'm so glad for all of you.
Thanks so much for updating us. I can't even say that "HGE" once! Poor little Cami went through a lot of pain! I'm glad she has such loving people in her life.:)

I totally missed this thread too. After Cami's gotcha day and you alluded to her being sick, I started looking for a thread. It would have made sense to check Dog Health but then I don't always follow the most sensible course at first.
I'm so glad to hear that Cami is doing better. You know, not too long before I discovered PT, Tommy went through something similar. He was at the vet's for a good 4-5 days, which seemed forever to me. At one time the vet called me and his prognosis was pretty bad because they could not get Tommy to eat anything at all, and I think the vet was preparing me for the worst. I remember so clearly the turnaround point when he finally took some chicken broth on his own. My vet was calling me twice a day with updates and even 11-12 pm at night when he would check on him again.
I think he had some form of gastroenteritis as well. He had the bloody diarrhea and vomiting too. He had gotten into some rotten grass clippings in the compost by the garden, I'm pretty positive that is what caused it. Our ordeals sound so similar. I know how horribly sickening it was for me to go through so I can truly relate to what you've been through with poor Cami. I'm just so glad she's on the mend, and all the wonderful support and prayers here at PT during this time is truly touching.
Give Cami girl an extra hug for me.
