Bad drinking habits

Sara has this problem...Lol. :o She has clean water sitting there in the kitchen -- and yet, it goes untouched. She, for some reason or another, decides to drink out of the toilet and the bathtub! I think it's terribly discusting. Not only that, but when she goes into the bathtub, she gets her feet wet and then drags muddy footprints all over the house!

Does anyone else's cat refuse to drink from their own water?

my cat will drink out of the toilet if I leave the seat up but that is just because she is too lazy to go downstairs. I make sure to keep all the lids down now. I have a fresh flow water bowl and she has never refused to drink out of it. Actually, I am surprised at how much she drinks since I hear most cats don't drink enough water but she will drink any water, my gf brought over her dog (an akita) and I put some water out for him and all of a sudden there is my cat drinking the water and Max (the akita) came up to get some water and she hissed at him! Nothing funnier than seeing a 100lb dog scared of a 7lb cat! :)

I filter Bastet's water and its in a water bowl system that dribbles out when she lowers the bowl to acertain level - as for the toilet drinking - close hte lid and makesure everyone is aware of doing that before leaving the area. The bathroom , I am not so sure about that.

I have a dog that does that, drinks out of the toliet. And then the chihuahuas get in the bathtub to drink water, if the bowl gets empty for one second, I hear them in there barking and I know that they are out of water, so I have to go put water in their bowl, these guys are the drinkingest bunch I have ever seen, and I keep a huge, huge bowl for them to drink out of.

I have a very large, deep bathtub, and when they get in there, the smaller ones just jumps up and down trying to get out of the tub, and look so funny and so cute. I have to water these rascals two or three times a day. The Rottweiler is the one that likes to drink out of the toliet, and then when she is done she drools the water out all over the seat, and floor.

The cats drink from the water bowl though, but I have caught the big guy Stubby drinking out of the toliet. I don't know why they do it, its not like they stay out of water, they are just an impatient bunch. They demand service, service right then and there!

The dogs, eats me out of house and home, the cats like their food served on my desk, so sometimes I can't see the monitor because of the kitty butts in the way.

Oh well!

It's a very common problem around here! And yes they have two water bowls that are always full. They are just brats, there is just no other excuse! That's why we love em!!!http://petoftheday.com/talk/images/our_smilies/biggrin.gif

That is a wonderful picture of Potty Pete! My Gigi used to wake me during the night to get me out of bed to drip the tap in the bath. She would sometimes drink it or just watch it until she found something else for me to do!

On a serious note, I have read on numerous occasions that cats should not have tap water - it contains far too many chemicals, and they should drink either distilled or bottled. My girls have bottled.

The tap water here only has flouride, which I don't like. Flouride is supposed to have the oppisite affect on dogs than people if they get too much. Not sure about cats though.

Some cats are VERY particular about how fresh their water is, aren't they! I have an aunt whose cat will only drink out of the faucet, so she turns it on for her every now and then or leaves it dripping. Another--cheaper--solution I've also heard is that a nonplastic dish keeps the water tasting fresher.

We leave our bathroom doors shut so we don't deal with the toilet and tub problem, but Checkers likes to drink out of pans soaking in the kitchen sink! He also likes to "bob" for oatmeal... we tried to train him to stay off the counter but he still does it surreptitiously.

Thankfully he'll drink water from his dish or the dog's, although he vastly prefers to drink his when it's just been filled. That's when he guzzles it down. I don't know why he'll drink the dog's when the dog makes it so scummy...:eek:

I have two cats, and one of there favorite things to do is wait for me to get out of the shower so they can sit in the wet bathtub. They wait for every last drop to fall and lick up the remaining water. My youngest has even jumped in the shower a few times while on. They have a filtered water bowl/fountain which they use as well. I wouldn't worry too much about them not using their water bowl, but do make sure you wash it often to avoid the water from becoming stagnant.

...they'd much rather drink out of a cup like meowmie does. In fact, if meowmie gets herself a glass of water, the cats help themselves as soon as the back is turned!
