Mickey is going to the vet today (with Lucas and Amber who get shots) so the vet can look in his mouth. I noticed the gums on one side are really red but the other side is fine. I know that he is in the process of losing is baby teeth (found 2 canines on the floor recently), but I do not know if it is happening properly or if he has a problem (I have't had many kittens at his age, most of mine were adopted older).
I say to him "Oh yeah! Now that I adopted you, you go and have expensive dental problems!" And then he nuzzles me and I melt into a puddle. :)
I'll let you know after we return from the vet's what we find out.

Well, even though it appears that I am talking to myself, I promised an update so here it is.
Mickey's gums are swollen and it has nothing to do with baby teeth (like I hoped it was that simple). He is being re-tested for FIV as this could be the root of his problem. :( I won't know until later today. He will go on antibiotics and a gel that goes on the gums. Steroids will be next if the antibiotics do not work.

Poor Mickey :( I hope his teeth get better and that his blood test comes back clear.

Keep us updated Jen.

Hope the test results come back good. Please keep us updated. Glad you were on top of things...and were checking in his mouth and picked up on it...being that you have 20 cats, you really are on top of things, that is for sure!!! ***I applaud you*** :)

Try not to worry too much. Remember how bad Spike's teeth were? They retested him also, but that came back negative. He just had a MAJOR case of gigivitis and teeth problems. Please keep us updated.

I am hoping it isn't anything too serious!

Well the vet office gave ,e a good scare today. When I called to ask, they went to look for the results and then asked if they could call me back (they alwyas just told me the results before, I was certain they were going to put a vet on the phone to give me the bad news). But when they finally got back to me the results were negative......WHEW!!!!!
So, he is on antibiotics for a few days and will start stroids if there is no improvement.
My vet went home sick today (after my appointment) so I have not had a chance to ask why this might be happening to such a young fellow.

So very glad the test was negative! Mickey boy is one of my PT favorites.

My Bob had a bad round of gingivitis at a fairly early age. The vet thought it might be an inherited thing.

Hope little Mickey does well on the antibiotics and gets better soon!

I sure hope that the medicine will help Mickey's gums. Prayers and positive thoughts are coming your way.

So it was not because his teeth needed cleaning? It would be early for him but however not impossible.

I'm so glad that Mickeys test results were negative but sad his wee gums are sore, hope the tablets work and he's back to normal soon. Your very lucky he lets you look at his teeth, Bonnie would have my hand off she doesn't like me inspecting her at all!

Aww, poor Mickey. I hope his teeth are not causing him too much discomfort. Fingers crossed from a speedy recovery.

You might want to ask the vet if they tested for the calici virus, which has one symptom of gum swelling/gingivitis in young cats.
