what is the deal with sibes? Why are some of them born with long coats like Anna and Tikeya, and others are born with short coats like Nebo and Roxey??

Short coated NEBO:

Who knows. Maybe it has to do with grooming?

i dought it, i know that long haired siberian huskies are caused by a throw back in the generation of pups, or a gene mix up. they are not a commenly seen, but long coated sibes have loooong hair way longer then Tikeyas and Annas. I brush tikeya all the time and her hair alwasy stays the same length?? humm..

Maybe it's just gene's then. Although I do remember Amy saying Nebo's parent's had longer fur than him.

Sort of like some babies are born with lots of hair, other's aren't.

Coat
The coat of the Siberian Husky is double and medium in length, giving a well-furred appearance, but is never so long as to obscure the clean-cut outline of the dog. The undercoat is soft and dense and of sufficient length to support the outer coat. The guard hairs of the outer coat are straight and somewhat smooth-lying, never harsh nor standing straight off from the body. It should be noted that the absence of the undercoat during the shedding season is normal Trimming of whiskers and fur between the toes and around the feet to present a neater appearance is permissible. Trimming the fur on any other part of the dog is not to be condoned and should be severely penalized. Faults: Long, rough, or shaggy coat; texture too harsh or too silky; trimming of the coat, except as permitted above.

Never said it did, it explains how it's "supposed" to be.

ok... well so tikeya, anna, and roxey and nebo are all the same breed with different coat types?? hum.. doesnt make sence, because wouldent they be known as different coat types? example, smooth fox terrier and wire hair fox terriers??

I think there are a lot of breeds like that.
Golden Retrievers, some have really long hair and others are so short haired they look like labs.

Here's a page with some siberian husky photos

http://www.huskycolors.com/rescue.html

Show dogs have a tendency to have a thicker coat, especially more around the neck, but the coat never obscures the clean-cut outline of the body. The majority of those dog's coats look more like Nebo's/Roxey's to me.

Here's a page specifically on the coat

http://www.kossok.com/sibes/info/analysis/coat.htm

Here's another photo of Nebo...

Nebo's mother...it's hard to tell in the photos, but her coat is defintely thicker and considerably longer around the neck.

When we were looking at pups we looked at a litter of racing line huskies. I looked at Nebo's litter the same day. The racing pups coats were much much thinner...they also lacked the color and facial mask. Also they were psycho! I've never seen more HYPER puppies!

Nebo's coat is pretty short for a siberian husky, and he also has fairly long legs. I still wouldn't call him a racing line husky, nor a show line husky. He's just a Nebo husky. :D

Tikeya and Anna are defintely *not* long-haired huskies (woolies). I've seen woolies, and their coats are much much longer. I would just classify them as a medium length coat.

Grooming really would not make a difference in the length of the guard hairs, but it does in the thickness of the coat. You can't tell from pics but the guard hairs at the base of Nebo's neck are really quite long, they just lay pretty flat. His coat is very soft and plush, and it's thinner on his sides...thicker on his back/neck/tail. I know his coat would look/feel thicker if I'd stop obsessively brushing him...but I like his coat the way it is.

No matter which coat is technically correct, they are all beautiful! :)

Maybe Nebo has some racing line in his pedigree. I've seen other examples of different looking coats in the same breed.

http://www.workingpitbull.com/amstaffpit.htm

It mostly talks about the differences in Pit Bulls and AmStaffs, but at the bottom of the page it shows the differences in show bred English Setters and field working English Setters, as well as Huskies.

The show bred Setters are bred to look pretty while the working Setters are bred for their working abilities rather than a pretty coat. Before the AKC came into play, a lot of our breeds probably weren't as pretty as they are now.

Tikeyas dad was a woolie, he has very long hair, they shouldnt have bred him because I have read that it isnt good to breed woolies. ?? tikeyas mom was a smooth coated like Nebo andf roxey, she was pure white :p..

here is another pic of Tikeya

If the woolie is a fualt or disqualifying feature in the breed, then no Tikeya's dad shouldn't have been bred. He would have been disqualified in the show ring, but of course, when the AKC doesn't put stricter regulations on their registries, people are free to breed whatever they want and claim AKC registry in an attempt to make money. It's really sad that it's like that.

I was reading a dog magazine talking about dog clubs in Germany. People have to put their dogs through all sorts of trials and tests and pass before they can breed their dogs. Maybe if the AKC would follow suite to the German dog clubs we might not have so many unscrupulous breeders out there creating more problems.

Huskies can have varying coat lengths, within a small range. However, a woolie coat is a disqualification, so no Tikeya's dad should never have been used as a breeder. Responsible Husky breeders are working very hard to eleminate the woolie gene. The reason is that a woolie coat makes it extremely difficult for a husky to work. Woolie coats hold snow, they don't insulate as well as the regular length coat. The dog can't work as sled dogs because they can't keep themselves dry and warm. A woolie coated husky can be in grave danger in cold conditions.

siberian huskies are way smaller, and they can have blue eyes when pure bred, they have less muscle mass, and cannot pull as much weight as a malamute. The alaskan malamute can only have brown eyes, they have alonger shaggier coat, they have a thicker muzzle, and have bigger paws, they are amuch large breed in general.

click here form malamute (http://www.akc.org/breeds/recbreeds/alasmal.cfm)

They are different breeds. Malamutes are much bigger than sibes. They are both northern breeds, both double coated. Their temperments and original purpose are different. Huskies were bred to pull a relatively light load, at a fairly pace. Mals were bred to pull very heavy loads at slow speeds for a long way. Mals tend to be more dog aggressive, higher prey drive. Both are hard to contain, stubborn, ect.

This is Muskwa--he's a six year old, purebred siberian. Weighs 48 pounds stands about 22 inches at the shoulder.

This is Heyoka. He's a 2 year old purebred Malamute. He weighs 130 pounds and is much taller. I'm 5'10 and he looks me in the eye when he jumps up.

I don't breed. My dogs are altered. I have 17 right now--three fosters, 14 permanent pack members. They are part-time sled dogs, full time spoiled pets.

It is fun--it's also much more work than it looks like.

Muskwa is my pack alpha. He doesn't run in lead for me, but he is definately the alpha dog. My lead dogs are both females and both submissive to other dogs when they aren't in harness.

[QUOTE]

Thanks! Nope, it's just the pictures. Although, his nose is pink and around his eyes are pink, but, when he was a pup it wasn't like that, just his nose was pink. lol and down his back he's got some brown and a little on his ears so i wouldn't call him an albino, but, he's pretty darn close to it! There's white hairs all over the house! LOL :p

I have question, does red and white sibs can have blue eyes .....

I think the red ones with the blue eyes are absolutly gorgeous! (like Nebo!;) )

When Daisy was younger, people thought she was a lab. She didn't have that long, flowing, coat like most goldens, and was VERY light colored.

See? :o

My sister has eight Siberians. I wish I had pictures of them to post. She has black and white, silver and white and red and white ones ... and one black and white pinto/piebald. Most of them have blue eyes, but a couple have brown eyes. She is wanting a bi-eyed one, now.

Here is a link to a site with good pictures of all the Siberian colors, patterns and eyes.
