View Full Version : Daisy needs an operation for Entropion
Killearn Kitties

Our Daisy has the Chlamydia virus which causes her to have an eye infection every so often. Usually she needs ointment and very occasionally, antibiotics.
Last weekend we took her to the vet to get her checked and get some ointment, and the vet said that her eyelids were turning in the way (a condition called entropion) which means that the eyelashes stick into the eye causing further irritation.
She is booked in to have surgery on Monday. A little slice is taken from the skin above and below the eye which corrects the way the eyelid is lying. Afterwards she will need to wear a cone. I don't know how she will react to that! I'm not looking forward to this. Poor baby. :(

Aaawwww...poor Daisy. :(
But if it keeps her from having further problems, it will be for the best in the long run.
Skritchies and smoochies to her in the hopes she'll be a good girl and not fight the cone too much. :)

Poor baby Daisy.
Hoping she recovers quickly and that she doesn't mind the cone.
When Bam Bam had her cone on for 10 days following her spay. I used to allow her a 5 minute review a day whilst she sat on my knee, so I could stop her scratching her stiches. It gave Bam Bam a chance to groom etc.

I hope Daisy's surgery goes well and that she recovers quickly.
I wouldn't enjoy wearing a cone either. :D :D

Poor Daisy, hope all goes well for her, did they give you any indication of how long the cone will be on (stupid question I suppose it all depends on how quickly she heals !!)
Give her {{{HUGS}}} from baby sis Bonnie ;) and of course {{HUG}} for you too ;)

I hope she does well with her surgery. How long will she have to wear a cone? I bought Bassett a special cone off the internet that didn't seem to bother her at all. Here is the link:
http://www.bonafido.com/page6.html
The company was great. They even phoned me at home to confirm they had my address written out correctly. If she will have to wear it for a while, you might want to try something like that out.
Best of luck! :)

A quick update on Daisy before I start work ...
She was a little bit panicky when she came out of her box last night. Normally she runs straight behind the sofa, but of course the cone kept hitting bits of furniture. She quietened down quite quickly though. She was, understandably, a bit subdued; but she managed to eat a little chicken.
The cone has to stay on for 10 days!! The stitches will dissolve in 30 days, but can be taken out before that time if they start to bother her. She has to get eye drops twice a day. That could be a performance and a half, because Alec is now away until tomorrow night, so I have asked a neighbour to help me and Daisy is not very good with strangers. This neighbour has always had animals though, including cats, and she is a nurse, so I am sure we will cope!
This morning Daisy just wanted to snuggle in to me and get pats and cuddles. It was a bit of an effort to come to work.
Daisy says a big thank you to everyone for their hugs, kisses and skritchies!

Oh I am terribly sorry that somehow I've missed this thread about Daisy's surgery...however I am happy that she's doing fine now (but I wonder how fine you really feel with a cone on the neck)...
Poor Girl!!!
Nellie was through this cone thing recently, too and she didn't calm down so quickly like sweet Daisy...
I hope she will recover quickly and that the stitches are removed soon...hope you'll get lots of extra treats and love!!!
Hugs to you Daisy,
Sabine and Nellie

I would be very interested to find out how you got the diagnosis and what her symptoms are as my Lucy has had some eye probs for a while now. They keep giving her drops which do nothing!
Wishing you and Daisy all the best. Big hugs to her from Gigi and Lulu.

I know exactly what you are going through. After Nakita was spayed, she needed the cone on for 10 days, and I had to give her eye cream (not drops) 3 times a day. Drops are much easier to put in the eye than cream!
To give the cat some relief, you may want to take the cone off so she can wash herself. I know that Nakita hated not being able to wash herself, so I would sit with her when I had the cone off. Then you just make sure she doesn't touch the area where she had the surgery. Nakita would go through 1 hour cleaning sessions! Since I was home throughout the day, I would take off the cone 2 or 3 times and it seemed to really help her.
I'm glad to hear everything went well. Get better soon Daisy!

Good for you Daisy - I'm so pleased you've come through the op at the 'white coats' with flying colours :)
I bet you feel much more comfortable now don't you - or you will in a couple of days.
KK - I agree with RB about removing the 'cone' every so often so she can have a wash and move about unhindered - they adore that little bit of 'freedom'.
Good Luck to You Both xxx

My little furry patient was very good about getting her drops both last night and this morning. Both times she was hiding in the wardrobe, but had conveniently placed herself on top of a handbag, which was fairly easily slid out. I hadn't realised this, but the neighbour who was helping me, her own cat has had this same operation to one eye. Apparently it was a two towel job to get his drops in!
I was woken up this morning with a cone in my face. Headbumpies aren't easy with a cone.:D The wee soul just wants to snuggle in, to be reassured, I think.
Thanks to those who have suggested taking the cone off to let her groom herself. I will try this when Alec is back. I wouldn't have risked it on my own!

Daisy got her stitches out last night! We took her to the vet for another checkup expecting them to say that the cone could come off. The vet thought that her wounds were healing very well so took the stitches out, because it was very difficult to clean her eyes properly. The stitches were all crusty from matter getting stuck that we couldn't rub out.
She sat on the table as good as anything while the vet snipped out all these stitches. What a good girl she is. :)
Her eyes look great now. Daisy just could not have been more pleased to get home and be without the collar. She just purred and purred and purred and purred and purred!!!
She has to get her drops for a few more days, but the vet does not need to see her again.
Once again, Daisy thanks you all for your good wishes, cuddles, headbumpies and stritchies; and wishes you all a Merry Christmas!
