Subject: [azarc] OT: Petco's in Southern California Test Market for
selling puppies

Hi Folks,

I have just learned that some Petco's in Southern California are now
selling puppies. They are testing this market to see if selling
puppies is good for business. I had not heard anything about this
until the last couple of days.

Apparently, Petco's corporate office has been contacted by a
person I know in So.CA, and they do not see a problem with selling
puppies and working with rescue groups. This contradiction seems
self-evident to me.

Their opinion needs to be changed. This test market needs to FAIL.
Another outlet for puppymillers to sell their puppies does not need
to be made available. Most of us would agree that having Petland and
the Mom and Pop pet stores selling puppies from the mills is
horrible and another nationwide chain is unthinkable.

I hope that those who work with your local Petco's will speak with
the management and have your voice heard about this issue. I would
hate to see this test market succeed and Petco's selling puppies at
a Petco near me and you.

Here is the corporate contact information I could find.

I just got an email saying that it's the most current internet urban legend. I hope it is at least.

I got this through one of my Shiba groups

There is an Internet rumor that PETCO is test-marketing selling
puppies in
> their Southern California stores. We can assure you, without a
doubt, this rumor
> is not true. In their 38 year history, PETCO has NEVER sold dogs or
cats and
> remains committed to this. PETCO encourages adoptions of all
animals (beyond
> just cats and dogs) and although PETCO does still sell small
animals, reptiles,
> and birds in many of their stores, they are actively seeking
adoption
> partners for these kinds of animals (as well as dogs and cats). If
you have a small
> animal or bird adoption program and would like to do in-store
adoptions, then
> please let us know so we can introduce you to the appropriate folks
at PETCO.
> Thanks for all the hard work you do,

Sounds like it is definitely a rumor.

I hope that they don't. Poor pups. They will have to be born in shelters and rarely ever get fresh air. Stuck in this little box all day with people sticking their faces on the glass and tapping little kids. What a way to spend a puppyhood.POOR PUPS.:(

Thank God it was just a rumor, that's horrible to spread around. If it was true, I would have had to found a new place to shop.

It's good to see that this is just a rumor, however, a lot of Petcos and Petlands do sell ferrets that come from ferret mills. They get their ferrets from Marshall Farms which is one of the biggest suppliers of ferrets in the US. They breed ferrets and beagles and sell them as test animals in laboratories. Check out their add in Lab Animal Magazine:

I wish I had done more research before I bought my ferrets, but I won't make that mistake again. To those ferret fanciers out there, rescue your next "weasel" or try to find a reputable breeder.
