View Full Version : Molly's Limping

Hi all. For about a month or so Molly has had a limp. It's been going on and off, but it doesn't seem to hurt her. We took her to the vet a while ago, and he checked to see if there was anything inbetween her toes, that could be causing it. He didn't find anything. He then examined her leg a bit and didn't find any distinct bumps, or protruding bones. He thought it was just a sprain, and if she continues or looks like she's in pain, to bring her back for x-rays.
The limping has been going on and off for a few weeks now, but my mom doesn't see the need to take her to the vet yet. I'm worried it could be elbow dysplasia, due to her bad breeding. :( She's not even 3 years old!! :( It doesn't seem like she's in any pain, because she's still her nomal, goofy self. She does like to jump up to look over the other side of the wall, to bark at the other dogs. Could that be causing it?? I'm trying to retrict her as much as I can.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
Well she is a big girl, and so much weight on those legs could be a problem if she's jumping up by the fence.
Maybe she came down a little hard sometime?
Whenever Ozzy falls off the bed, or something to make him limp, I jusr rub his paw and leg for a good ten minutes. I rub inbetween his toes, on his tones, and rotate his wrist, meaning I softly rotate it in small circles. He squirms a little bit, but after a couple minutes he just sits and enjoys it! :)
Boy, I hope she gets better. :)

The last time we took her to the vet for a check-up, the vet didn't say she weighed too much. He just said she was a big girl! And she is. :)
I really hope it's nothing serious...if it continues, I will drag and force my mom to bring her to the vet.
Thanks for the advice, I will try that. :)

Believe it or not, the best thing you can probably do (besides seeing a vet) is let her walk on it. Getting regular walks can help repair any damaged tissue and help her get used to walking on it again. :) Timber had a limp once. So I stopped running her but let her walk for longer periods of time and it went away.
Good luck!

If it has been going on for over a month I would get it x-rayed. or at least a second opinion.
I am guessing it is her front leg?
My rott had an on/off limp & x-rays showed her sesmoidal bones (the tiny tiny feet bones) were fractured. It is not common but not too awful rare either, mostly in large dogs. My vets & a specialist say that depending on the age of the fracture & the age of the dog they may heal themselves, or there is surgery but about a 50/50 cahnce it will do any good. Now this was about 4.5-5 years ago so they may have better options now. My dog was only 6 months at the time so we opted for meds. They worked for a while then it didn't bothere her for a while then it flared back up & knock on wood no problems for the last couple years.
But I was advised not to even walk her unless necissary. My personal opinion is that is a dog is limping and you do not know the cause I would not excersize him/her at all until it is determained.

Thanks so much for your reply.
I just talked to my mom, and she said if it gets any worse, we'll take her to the vet.

My dog is limping, too. I feel bad for him. He tore a ligament in his knee.

what a terrible limping time! My rott, Raustyk just started limping last night, I hope it's nothing but I am thinking it may be her cruciate again (other leg this time though). Oh my goodness I can afford another 4000 surgery. I'm giving her my 3 day rule, if no improvement in 3 days ion she goes to the vet.

Okay, so far so good. I've been making her walk on it more and I've seen improvement. She hasn't been limping for a few days now! :) I'm still keeping an eye on it, but at least it's stopped for the mos part.
Thanks for the help and suggestion guys!! :)

The main thing is to watch her, Julie, and see her progress. Honey has a touch of arthritis in her back, left foot. Our vet found it in an x-ray when she was limping a lot. I was grateful that it was arthritis, not hip dysplasia, and nothing more serious. But Honey isn't even 5 years old yet! I notice that she has the most problems when she has been exercising more than normal (like in snow, which is rare here), or long walks. I have Rimadyl on hand, but she doesn't take it consistently, just as needed.
Hope Molly will be just fine!

Poor Honey. :(
Yeah, that's what I'm really worried about. :(
She's not even 3 years old yet, and is already having problems. But, like I posted I've seen improvement and I hope I see more of it! :)

Don't you worry for one minute about our Honey. She is fine!! :) What a great girl she is too!!! :D She knows her mama watches her constantly, to make sure she is ok. She is just the sweetest girl!!!! :D
I hpoe your Molly will be just fine too. And by the way, it has probably been over a year since Honey was diagnosed with this small problem, which would have made her around 3 years old too. :)
Thank goodness Molly has you watching out for her! :)

Jake's limping again too. I really think it's the weather. He hurt his knee this summer. I know my knee (which was injured in the past) hurts more lately too, and so does my husband's ankle. Maybe all the new limping is due to the change in seasons. I was thinking of giving Jake some of that pain medication the vet gave him, because I have some left over. Maybe on really cool, damp days I'll give him some first thing in the morning.
