Gidget died Tuesday

Tuesday morning was a day I will never forget. Dear, sweet Gidget died that morning (before we had a chance to get her to the vet) in my arms. I keep seeing her little face - so innocent. I only had Gidget for nine days: nine truly wonderful days that I will never forget. The Humane Society (where we got her from) said that two other kittens in her litter had died too. Sooo sad. They said that the cause was 'pan leukemia'. Anyone know anything about this?

Oh Gidget, I miss you. Since I only had Gidget for nine days, I didn't get very many pictures. If any of them are half decent, expect to see Gidget being COTD sometime in the future.

God, I'm starting to cry. I know that she is at the Rainbow Bridge now. Rose is looking after her. I can see them, sitting beside each other up there. Gidget....

I miss her so much. I had an emotional breakdown at school today, during grammar class. People thought I was crazy, crying like that. But thats okay, because I love Gidget.

And I miss her, and Rose and CiCi, so much.

Have fun at the Bridge you guys. I love you. Someday, we will be re-united. Someday... Thank you babies, for all the times you blessed my life. Whether is was 6 years, two and a half years or nine days.

There doesn't seem to be a connection between how long you have been owned by a cat and how much it hurts when you lose them :(

It is scary how quickly these creatures take hold of our hearts.

Panleukopenia is the medical term for Distemper. It's fatal to kittens, unfortunately AND it can stay airborn for a year if the room the kitten was in was not disinfected properly.

I have lost kittens to distemper in the past. It's awful. There is no cure once they get it. I had a kitten die in my arms and another that died on the way to the vet. You need to quarantine the room where Gidget was in off to any other kittens. Scrub down everything with Clorox (not the cheap stuff, but Clorox) Bleach. You can use 2 parts water, 1 part Clorox and put it in a spray bottle. Do not take in any other kittens for at least 6 months.

Thank you all for such sympathy and compassion towards my situation. It's been tough, these past few days. Let's just say that I had more than one emotional breakdown at school (and on the bus, at home, the shopping mall...). You guys have made me feel a little better now. Thanks! You are all so wonderful!

Moosmom: Gidget had apparantley been vaccinated againest it. They said that she probably had it before she was vaccinated though. So, can my other cats who have been vaccinated againest it, get distemper?

I'm so sorry you have lost your precious Gidjet! That's so sad!

And don't mind those at school who think you're crazy because you've cried over your kitty! When I lost my Katz, I cried all day at work and my boss removed me from the entrance hall. I went home later, I was just heartbroken. People who never experienced the love of an animal will never understand that!

To answer your question: As far as I know, your other kitties that have been vaccinated against pan leukemia before Gidjet has arrived are most likely not in danger. I think the poor Gidjet kitten has already had it before she got vaccinated, and unfortunately, the vaccine can lead to a break out when the cat is already infected. I guess this is what happened to the poor baby and her litter mates.

I'm sure she loves you for the 9 wonderful days she had with you!

My deepest sympathies on the loss of your precious Gidget.
It doesn't matter if you had an animal for 1, 2, 3, etc., 9 days or years, the loss is just as devasting.
Your Gidget was very lucky to have shared such wonderful moments with you. May the sweet memories of her, remain forever in your heart.
She was lucky to have felt the love from you in her short time on earth.

I'm so very sorry to hear of your loss of sweet Gidget. Sometimes baby kittens are already sick and it just hits them so quickly before you have a chance to even notice. :(

I don't know about your shelter, but ours will allow you to adopt another kitty if it's only been a short time and the first one passes away. Maybe you could save another life from the shelter? Good luck, and I hope the pain of Gidget's passing soon ends. Please know that you showed her love and gave her a chance at a wonderful life ... there was nothing more you could have done for her. ;)

I know how you feel. My hamster died. I was SO sad. I remember when I first got him, he always used to pee on my sister! I miss him SO much. I know he is at Rainbow Bridge, too.
