Excitement Pees!

Ever since Bella was a puppy she would get very excited to greet people who came to the door. :) Unfortunately sometimes her excitement got the best of her and she would do a little sprinkle or spritz just as they would come inside. :o She also would do this at the groomer's, as we arrived, and occasionally at the vet's as he would begin his exams. :o Over time she has gotten much better but just two weeks ago she 'sprinkled' at the feet of the girl who my son was dating just as she came inside. :o Fortunately she is a dog lover and wasn't even fazed by it. :) My question is, has your dog ever done this? Does it ever totally stop? Bella is 2 1/2 yrs. old now and I thought she was 'over this' until the last incident. :o

Yes, Pam, Bob does, always has! I think with him it is because I don`t get many visitors and he just gets overexcited, especially if it is someone new. I have always thought that if I had lots of people coming and going it wouldn`t happen, but perhaps I am wrong.

None of my dogs have ever done this, but my best friend's parent's dog does. She must be at least 10 by now and sorry to say, has done it off and on her whole life. The good news for them ( I guess) is that they don't have carpet right by the front door :)

Pam, it's interesting that you posted this now. That's because on Friday, Mark was working from home, and his co-worker Mark stopped by. Malone went CRAZY and ended up tinkling on Mark's (the co-worker) leg. :o I about DIED when my hubby told me. Malone has never done that before, and I don't know why it happened this time either. He said that it was almost like a submissive peeing, but Malone was bouncing around, tail wagging.

But I agree...it's soo :o :o :o :o :o !!!

None, none of the pups do it here but my neighrbor's Shnauzer does! :)

My aunt's dog, Roxy does it whenever I go and visit her in MI.
I'm not for sure how to stop it, but...
I wonder if letting her out to go potty before you're expecting company -- maybe that would work?

GRR.. my post was erased.. ok.. over again.. Cami has always done it. since she was about 6 or 7 months.. Sometimes she does it out of excitement and others because shes really scared of that person.. The vet said it was a puppy stage but shes not a puppy anymore shes almost one.. :rolleyes: Its quite embarrassing because i have to stand outside for a good 5 minutes with her while company is over..

Lacie did it when she was a puppy, but not as an adult.

It is actually quite common.

A couple things to try: Teach your dog to always greet visitors with a toy in her mouth. That way she is somewhat distracted. Also, tell your visitors to ignore her completely for the first five to ten minutes or so that they are there. No talking to her, no making eye contact, no touching her. After she is calm, then they can pet her. This teaches her that she will rewarded with attention only when she is calm.

I wasn't able to post a reply yesterday when I read this. Hannah does this too. Like Kayann mentioned, one tactic that works for us is (if you know you are expecting company) to make sure that she has been out to empty her bladder. And as Twisterdog mentioned, if you can get your guests to initially ignore her, that helps a lot.

Other than that, keep the paper towels in a convenient location and if you don't have a hard surface at the entrance, maybe a throw rug that can be washed periodically.

I can't say I will ever feel confident that she won't do it, it does seem to not happen all that frequently.
